Brisbane weather: Freezing temperatures for parts of south-east Queensland

182 reading now

South-east Queensland is set for its coldest days of the year as the very edge of a cold front blasting southern Australia inches its way over the border, bringing sub-zero temperatures in places.

So, if you like walking in a warmish coat without getting sweaty, feeling like maybe you should buy a small portable heater and not kicking a leg out of the Doona, this weekend is for you.

Brisbane is bracing for its coldest few days of the year, with overnight temperatures dipping into the single figures.

Further west, forecasters expect things to get genuinely cold, with temperatures as low as minus 2 degrees for the traditionally colder parts of south-east Queensland.

For the capital, they're tipping a low of 8 degrees on Sunday and a degree warmer on Saturday and Monday, just a touch under the June average of 10.6 degrees.

"It's not overly cold and it doesn't last that long," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Adam Woods said.

"Probably as a cold snap it's not really (that severe)."

Despite the chilly mornings, it's looking like a beautiful weekend to venture outside, with light winds, sunny skies and maximums of about 20 degrees predicted.

The Gold Coast is expecting broadly similar conditions with the Sunshine Coast a degree or two warmer and a little cloudier.

But the Darling Downs, border ranges, Maranoa and even Ipswich can expect something that could feasibly be labelled winter.

Roma is expecting minus 1 on Saturday, with Applethorpe tipped to reach minus 2 degrees on Sunday morning and Ipswich bracing for three degrees both mornings.

Those figures would be as many as 6 degrees below average.

In further good news to throw in the face of your southern cousins, Thursday night's rain is tipped to clear throughout Friday, after dumping 20-30 millimetres on parts of the Gold Coast hinterland.
