A portmanteau (i/pɔːrtˈmæntoʊ/, /ˌpɔːrtmænˈtoʊ/; plural portmanteaus or portmanteaux /-ˈtoʊz/) or portmanteau word is a linguistic blend of words, in which parts of multiple words, or their phones (sounds), and their meanings are combined into a new word. Originally, the word "portmanteau" refers to a suitcase that opens into two equal sections.
A portmanteau word fuses both the sounds and the meanings of its components, as in smog, coined by blending smoke and fog, or motel, from motor and hotel. In linguistics, a portmanteau is defined as a single morph which represents two or more morphemes.
The definition overlaps with the grammatical term contraction, but contractions are formed from words that would otherwise appear together in sequence, such as do and not to make don't, whereas a portmanteau word is formed by combining two or more existing words that all relate to a singular concept which the portmanteau describes.
A portmanteau should also be distinguished from a compound, which does not involve the truncation of parts of the stems of the blended words. For instance, starfish is a compound, not a portmanteau, of star and fish; whereas a hypothetical portmanteau of star and fish might be stish.
For SIGBOVIK 2015 I did this little hack to produce a portmanteau (that's a jammin' together of two words, like caviar + armpit = caviarmpit) of all 100,000+ words in English. This video is a little illustrated tutorial of what that means and how I did it. I hope it's fun! Software and the word: http://tom7.org/portmantout
This video will discuss what a portmanteau word is and how it is different from other similar types of words. More examples are on the blog this video is linked to at www.aaronsenglishpage.wordpress.com.

Portmanteau is a way to call words that were made up of two words blended together. In this lesson, Marc will discuss these words also called Frankenwords, by putting them in four groups (Computer/technology, Entertainment/Art, Places, and General). He will provide many example words and explain their roots. This lesson is intended for intermediate students who wish to improve their English grammar, and for those above levels who wish to clear up doubts about this topic. As you can read in the title, portmanteau morphs will be the topic of this video. There are quite different notions of the term portmanteau, which I tried to cover in this video as well. Answer to the question: Lewis Carroll, the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and many other novels for which he needed some new words.
Video shows what portmanteau word means.
