Eritrea (/ˌɛrᵻˈtreɪ.ə/ or /ˌɛrᵻˈtriːə/;, officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the East Africa. With its capital at Asmara, it is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of Eritrea have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. The nation has a total area of approximately 117,600 km2 (45,406 sq mi), and includes the Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands. Its name Eritrea is based on the Greek name for the Red Sea (Ἐρυθρὰ Θάλασσα Erythra Thalassa), which was first adopted for Italian Eritrea in 1890.
Eritrea is a multi-ethnic country, with nine recognized ethnic groups in its population of around six million. Most residents speak Afroasiatic languages, either of the Semitic or Cushitic branches. Among these communities, the Tigrinya make up about 55% of the population, with the Tigre people constituting around 30% of inhabitants. In addition, there are a number of Nilo-Saharan-speaking Nilotic ethnic minorities. Most people in the territory adhere to Christianity or Islam.

Eritreans are celebrating 25 years of independence, which they gained on 24 May 1991. The Eritreans - who fought a 30-year war for independence against the far larger and better-equipped Ethiopian army - are in celebratory mood, despite the country being criticised by human rights groups for its lack of democracy, free press and forced conscription. The UN says 5,000 are fleeing the country every month. The BBC's Mary Harper has gained rare access to Eritrea, and visited an exhibition about the war.
English/Nat Five years after it wrested its freedom from Ethiopia, the tiny state of Eritrea is struggling to get its economy back on the rails. The fledgling republic has won praise from the U-S for its financial responsibility. And there are signs that one of the world's poorest nations may be heading for a brighter future. A new beginning for an old train. This 1957 locomotive has just been repaired in Eritrea's highland capital Asmara and is on its way down the coast to pick up a journey that was interrupted two decades ago. The railway was one of the victims of the country's 30-year struggle for independence against Ethiopia which ended in victory for the Eritreans in 1991. In wartime, the Eritreans applied their resourcefulness to defeat a mighty army. Now...

When a small Vancouver mining company Nevsun struck gold in a remote corner of Africa, it started with so much promise. In remote Eritrea, Nevsun built a mine that was generating $700 million in profits in its first four years of operation. But it was also generating a lot of controversy – because Nevsun was partnered with a brutal dictatorship that runs the country and controls 40% of the mine. That has led to allegations by the UN and Human Rights Watch that the regime has used conscripted military labour in the mine. The Eritrea government has also been accused of funneling arms to the terrorist group al-Shabaab. Nevsun denies the allegations of human rights abuses and insists it is a “template for responsible international business.” What is the price of doing business with a dictato...

Ethiopia declared a state of emergency on Oct. 9 following a wave of anti-government protests and unrest in the Oromia region
America has, by far, the largest, most powerful, well-equipped, and best trained military force to ever exist on Earth. This is probably why Americans can’t have any discussion about military spending without talking about which countries in the world can field an Army which even come close to the United States’. 1. Costa Rica The Costa Ricans have to be at the bottom of the list, as they have no armed forces to speak of. What they do have is an Army of wealthy Westerners who come to teach Yoga to other Westerners visiting Costa Rica. But no one will ever want to invade Costa Rica because these people will have to come with it. 2. Iraq What may have been the 4th largest army in the world under Saddam Hussein is now a shadow of its former self. Despite years of training from U.S. and Bri...

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.
