Human rights activists fear for press freedom in the country. বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে চ্যানেল ওয়ান সরকার বলছে, অনিয়মের কারণে বেসরকারি এ চ্যানেলটি বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়েছে। তবে বন্ধের আগে এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে চ্যানেল ওয়ান পরিচালনাকারী কোম্পানি ওয়ান এন্টারটেইনমেন্ট টেলিভিশনের পরিচালক মাজেদুল ইসলাম বলেন, তারা সরকারের সব কথাই শুনবেন। বন্ধের পর তিনি বলেছেন, তারা আইনের আশ্রয় নেবেন। চ্যানেল ওয়ান বন্ধের প্রক্রিয়া চলছে- দুপুরে মন্ত্রী এ কথা জানানোর পর বিকালেই গুলশানে বেসরকারি এ টেলিভিশনের কার্যালয়ে যায় বাংলাদেশ টেলিযোগাযোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ কমিশন (বিটিআরসি) এর পরিচালক (লিগ্যাল অ্যান্ড লাইসেন্স) এসএম শহীদুজ্জামানের নেতৃত্বে একটি দল। এর পরপরই চ্যানেলটির সম্প্রচার বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়। তখন চ্যানেলটিতে সন্ধ্যার খবর প্রচার হচ্ছিলো। বিটিআরসি কর্মকর্তা শহীদুজ্জামান সাংবাদিকদের বলেন, “কমিশনের সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী চ্যানেল ওয়ানের তরঙ্গ বরাদ্দ ও আর্থ স্টেশন বন্ধ করার নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।” এরপর চ্যানেল ওয়ান কর্তৃপক্ষ সম্প্রচার বন্ধ করে বলে জানান তিনি। বন্ধের কারণ জানতে চাইলে শহীদুজ্জামান বলেন, “তরঙ্গ বরাদ্দের শর্ত ভঙ্গ করেছে চ্যানেলটি। কয়েকবার নোটিশ পাঠানো হলেও তারা যথাযথ উত্তর দিতে পারেনি। তাই টেলিযোগাযোগ আইন ২০০১ অনুযায়ী চ্যানেলটি বন্ধ করে দেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়।” চ্যানেল বন্ধের পর মাজেদুল বলেন, “আমরা আইনের আশ্রয় নেব। এ ঘটনায় ভুক্তভোগী সব কর্মচারী। পুনরায় প্রতিষ্ঠানটি চালুর চেষ্টা করা হবে।” The Government of Bangladesh suspended Channel 1, a TV station founded by controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun (picture), who has close ties to Tarique Rahman, eldest son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. A number of human rights organisations have expressed deep concern for the action and its impact on freedom of the press and freedom of thought. Telecom Minister Raziuddin Ahmed Raju said that Channel 1 was temporarily suspended because it violated the rules of the broadcasting act. Under Bangladeshi law, TV stations are not allowed to use “transferable” equipment and licences. By contrast, Channel 1 was using equipment owned by other companies, something the minister called “a complete breach of the law”. For the minister, the government had no partisan motive to suspend the broadcaster. “We did not even consider who the owner is. If we had done so, many other channels would also have been closed." Channel 1 was established on 1 June 2005; it began official broadcasting on 24 January 2006. It employs 400 people and is the brainchild of Giasuddin Al Mamun, a controversial businessman involved in a number of criminal cases. Bangladesh has 15 private radio and TV channels. Human rights groups are concerned that the suspension of Channel 1 might negatively affect press freedom and favour censorship. Channel 1’s director Mazidul Islam said the station provided the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) with all the relevant documents in the case. He blamed Prime Bank, which had bought the equipment on the station’s behalf, for the problem. However, the BTRC did not buy that argument and decided instead to suspend its licence, temporarily. Private television Channel 1 went off-air yesterday after regulators stopped its transmission for using rented broadcasting equipment in violation of the law. A three-member team of Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission went to Channel 1 office on Uday Tower in Gulshan at 6:30pm and switched off its transmission. The channel was broadcasting its 6:30pm news bulletin. The BTRC said Channel 1 had sold off its broadcasting equipment and has been using machinery owned by another company. "But as per law, the licensee must own the equipment," said Post and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju. The government cannot tolerate such unlawful activities, he told journalists at the secretariat. However, Channel 1 authority told the media that the bank auctioned its equipment and a company won the bid, the auction winner has not yet made the payment. So, the channel still owns the equipment. Talking to The Daily Star, BTRC Chairman Zia Ahmed said the One Entertainment Ltd, owning company of Channel 1, took a loan of Tk 24 crore from Prime bank in 2005 mortgaging the broadcasting equipment.
