In this Cochise guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of Tom Morello's killer guitar riffs from this Audioslave hit.
This one is going to be a lot of fun to play. We will be using standard tuning just like the original recording.
The opening of "Cochise" has sort of a helicopter effect that is the result of Tom Morello using a pencil striking the strings rapidly along with some effects. Live he recreated that sound by using a short slapback delay and striking the muted strings with his fingers. He also rocks a whammy pedal back and forth to give it that oscillating sound.
I will show you how this is accomplished live but also demonstrate a way of playing the intro without using a delay.
After the helicopter effect, the band enters and we have a lot of drone guitar noise. For this section,I will show you what Tom Morello usually plays live.
When then get to the verse riff which is a lot of fun to play and moves around quite a bit.
Up next we have a chorus riff that is pretty similar in style to the verse riff. There can be some tricky rhythms in the second half of this riff, so watch out for that part.
Tom Morello's short solo is next and shouldn't present much of a problem for anyone above an upper beginner level.
I will then show you how to play all of the remaining riffs in the order that they appear in the song.

Cochise
Cochise (/koʊˈtʃiːs/; Cheis or A-da-tli-chi, in Apache K'uu-ch'ish "oak"; c. 1805 – June 8, 1874) was leader of the Chihuicahui local group of the Chokonen ("central" or "real" Chiricahua) and principal chief (or nantan) of the Chokonen band of the Chiricahua Apache. He led an uprising against the American government that began in 1861. Cochise County, Arizona is named after him.
Biography
Cochise (or "Cheis") was one of the most noted Apache leaders (along with Geronimo and Mangas Coloradas) to resist intrusions by European Americans during the 19th century. He was described as a large man (for the time), with a muscular frame, classical features, and long black hair, which he wore in traditional Apache style. He was about 6' tall and weighed about 175 lbs. In his own language, his name Cheis meant "having the quality or strength of oak."
Cochise and the Chokonen-Chiricahua lived in the area that is now the northern region of Sonora, Mexico; New Mexico and Arizona, which they had settled in sometime before the arrival of the European explorers and colonists. As Spain and later Mexico attempted to gain dominion over the Chiricahua lands, the indigenous groups became increasingly resistant. Cycles of warfare developed, which the Apache mostly won. Eventually, the Spanish tried a different approach; they tried to make the Apache dependent (thereby placating them) older firearms and liquor rations issued by the colonial government (this was called the "Galvez Peace Policy"). After Mexico gained independence from Spain and took control of this territory, it ended the practice, perhaps lacking the resources (and/or possibly the will) to continue it. The various Chiricahua bands resumed raiding in the 1830s to acquire what they wanted after the Mexicans stopped selling these goods to them.

Chris Cornell
Chris Cornell (born Christopher John Boyle; July 20, 1964) is an American rock musician and singer-songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter and rhythm guitarist for Seattle rock band Soundgarden and as former lead vocalist and songwriter for the supergroup Audioslave. He is also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991, and as founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his friend the late Andrew Wood.
Cornell is also known for his role as one of the architects of the 1990s grunge movement, for his extensive catalog as a songwriter and for his near four octave vocal range as well as his powerful vocal belting technique. He has released four solo studio albums, Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), Higher Truth (2015) and live album Songbook (2011). Cornell received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his song "The Keeper" which appeared in the film Machine Gun Preacher and co-wrote and performed the theme song to the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), "You Know My Name". He was voted "Rock's Greatest Singer" by readers of Guitar World, ranked 4th in the list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists" by Hit Parader, 9th in the list of "Best Lead Singers of All Time" by Rolling Stone, and 12th in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music".

Tom Morello

Thomas Morello (born May 30, 1964) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and activist. He is best known for his tenure with the band Rage Against the Machine and then with Audioslave. Morello was most recently a touring musician with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. He is also known for his acoustic solo act called The Nightwatchman, and his latest group, Street Sweeper Social Club. Morello is also the co-founder (along with Serj Tankian) of the non-profit political activist organization Axis of Justice, which airs a monthly program on Pacifica Radio station KPFK (90.7 FM) in Los Angeles.
Born in Harlem, New York, and raised in Libertyville, Illinois, Morello became interested in music and politics while in high school. He attended Harvard University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies. After his previous band Lock Up disbanded, Morello met Zack de la Rocha, and the two founded Rage Against the Machine together. The group went on to become one of the most popular and influential rock acts of the 1990s.

Audioslave
Audioslave was an American rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2001 and disbanded in 2007. The four-piece band consisted of then-former Soundgarden lead singer/rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, and then-former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello (lead guitar), Tim Commerford (bass/backing vocals), and Brad Wilk (drums). Critics first described Audioslave as a combination of Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine, but by the band's second album, Out of Exile, it was noted that they had established a separate identity.
Audioslave's trademark sound was created by blending 1970s hard rock with 1990s alternative rock. Moreover, Morello incorporated his well-known, unconventional guitar solos into the mix. As with Rage Against the Machine, the band prided themselves on the fact that all sounds on their albums were produced using only guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.
In its six years of existence, Audioslave released three albums, received three Grammy nominations, and became the first American rock band to perform an open-air concert in Cuba. Audioslave disbanded in February 2007 when Cornell issued a statement announcing that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences." The 2007 Rage Against the Machine reunion and tour involving the rest of the band as well as solo albums released that same year by Morello and Cornell cemented the supergroup's permanent demise.

Full Length LP
Full Length LP is the debut album by the Huntington Beach, California punk rock band Guttermouth, released in 1991 by Dr. Strange Records. It introduced the band's style of fast, abrasive punk rock with tongue-in-cheek humor and sarcastic lyrics. The album was originally released as an LP but was repackaged the following year as a CD including tracks from the band's first 2 EPs Puke and Balls, as well as the previously unreleased tracks "Malted Vomit" and "Ghost." It was re-released again in 1996 by Nitro Records under the title The Album Formerly Known as Full Length LP.
The album proved to be a success for the band, expanding their fan base and giving them opportunities to play shows all over southern California alongside other popular punk rock bands. An animated music video was made for the song “1, 2, 3…Slam!” and played on local punk rock and skateboarding video programs. Many of the songs from Full Length would remain staples in the band's live set throughout their career.

In the harsh times of Apache Wars the granitic domes in Dragoon Mountains range were used as a refuge by Chiricahua Apache tribe led by their brave chief Cochise. From his name today the place has its name: The Cochise Stronghold. Nowadays this very beautiful place of Southern Arizona is mostly populated by enthusiastic rock climbers, peaceful cattle and occasional coyotes. This video was made from two flights over the Western area of the Stronghold with prominent domes of Sheepshead and Muttonhead, which both me and my friend climbed over two consecutive days. Since the clips were made in the morning there were no climbers on the walls yet. Just the serene and silent landscape of majestic white rocks bathing in the waking sun. Tom Jeffords: When the Indian wishes to signal his brother, he does so by smoke sign. This is the white man's signal. My brothers far away can look at this and understand my meaning. We call this mail. And the men who carry the mail are like the air that carries the Apache smoke signals.

In the harsh times of Apache Wars the granitic domes in Dragoon Mountains range were used as a refuge by Chiricahua Apache tribe led by their brave chief Cochise. From his name today the place has its name: The Cochise Stronghold. Nowadays this very beautiful place of Southern Arizona is mostly populated by enthusiastic rock climbers, peaceful cattle and occasional coyotes. This video was made from two flights over the Western area of the Stronghold with prominent domes of Sheepshead and Muttonhead, which both me and my friend climbed over two consecutive days. In this Cochise guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of Tom Morello's killer guitar riffs from this Audioslave hit.
This one is going to be a lot of fun to play. We will be using standard tuning just like the original recording.
The opening of "Cochise" has sort of a helicopter effect that is the result of Tom Morello using a pencil striking the strings rapidly along with some effects. Live he recreated that sound by using a short slapback delay and striking the muted strings with his fingers. He also rocks a whammy pedal back and forth to give it that oscillating sound.
I will show you how this is accomplished live but also demonstrate a way of playing the intro without using a delay.
After the helicopter effect, the band enters and we have a lot of drone guitar noise. For this section,I will show you what Tom Morello usually plays live.
When then get to the verse riff which is a lot of fun to play and moves around quite a bit.
Up next we have a chorus riff that is pretty similar in style to the verse riff. There can be some tricky rhythms in the second half of this riff, so watch out for that part.
Tom Morello's short solo is next and shouldn't present much of a problem for anyone above an upper beginner level.
I will then show you how to play all of the remaining riffs in the order that they appear in the song.

In the harsh times of Apache Wars the granitic domes in Dragoon Mountains range were used as a refuge by Chiricahua Apache tribe led by their brave chief Cochise. From his name today the place has its name: The Cochise Stronghold. Nowadays this very beautiful place of Southern Arizona is mostly populated by enthusiastic rock climbers, peaceful cattle and occasional coyotes.
