Laos ((i/ˈlaʊs/, /ˈlɑː.ɒs/, /ˈlɑː.oʊs/, or /ˈleɪ.ɒs/)Lao: ສາທາລະນະລັດ ປະຊາທິປະໄຕ ປະຊາຊົນລາວ, pronounced [sǎːtʰáːlanalat pásáːtʰipátàj pásáːsón láːw] Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao), officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) (French: République démocratique populaire lao), is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Since 1975, it has been ruled by a Marxist and communist government. Its population was estimated to be around 6.8 million in July 2014.
Laos traces its history to the kingdom of Lan Xang, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century when it split into three kingdoms. In 1893, it became a French protectorate, with the three kingdoms—Luang Phrabang, Vientiane and Champasak — uniting to form what is now known as Laos. It briefly gained independence in 1945 after Japanese occupation, but returned to French rule until it was granted autonomy in 1949. Laos became independent in 1953, with a constitutional monarchy under Sisavang Vong. Shortly after independence, a long civil war ended the monarchy, when the Communist Pathet Lao movement came to power in 1975.

Quality of Investment in Loas PDR Economic performance Growth was maintained above 7% for a ninth consecutive year in 2014, though fiscal tightening and weaker global demand for minerals moderated the pace by 0.5 percentage points to 7.4%. Two decades of significant economic growth helped to halve the national poverty rate from 46% in 1992 to 23% in 2013. Economic prospects Growth is expected to moderate further in 2015 as lackluster demand for minerals weighs on mining and as fiscal constraints curb public investment. Nevertheless, growth in the gross domestic product is forecast at 7.0% in 2015, picking up to 7.2% in 2016. Investment in power projects will generate much of the growth over the forecast period. More than 20 power projects are under construction, including the $3.5 billio...

Thousands of Lao people cross the Vientiane-Nong Khai Friendship Bridge to Thailand every day, not only because they want to go shopping but also because they want to enjoy a modern lifestyle. An artist's impression of a night-time view of the Vientiane New World project on Don Chan Island. They want to spend time in air conditioned shopping malls, eat Japanese hotpot, pizza or a McDonald's hamburger at lunchtime and spend the rest of the afternoon in a movie theatre before returning home in the evening. One of the main reasons that Lao people like to cross the border to Thailand is because Laos cannot offer them modern shopping and dining facilities. CAMCE, a Lao-Chinese joint venture, has realised this need and wants to offer Lao people modern tourism facilities in their own country, t...

Mipa, Ilu, Sapiúm, Iuscí and Sogú are five Akha women, a sino-tibetan tribe settled in the North of Laos. The Akha women are not shy to step into the global market to gain their lot and sell their handcrafts to the tourists. A story as a metaphor, through which we can see the interconnections of the global e...

To satisfy our craving for Lao food we headed over to the ever popular Tamarind restaurant for lunch where we sampled traditional Lao cuisine in a relaxed setting nearby the Nam Khan river in Luang Prabang, Laos. Having made Thailand our base for several months, we were curious to see how Lao cuisine would compare with its 'spicy' and 'sweet' Thai counterpart. Mor Lum is a form of Isaan music that has roots in Laos, with variations that have emerged through globalization and modern influences. Traditionally, Mor Lum would consist of a boy, girl, and can player (a bamboo mouth organ) and the two would recite poems in song, responding to one another in a courtship-style performance. As time has gone on, mor lum has evolved into a much different style of music, with mor lum sing being at the forefront of fusion mor lum. Mor lum sing differs from traditional mor lum through clothing, performance style, and choice of instruments. Although the melodic strains are kept relatively the same, mor lum sing music uses modern instruments, such as guitars and saxophones, instead of the traditional Thai phin, a Thai style guitar, drums, and bong lang, an Isaan...

Travel video about destination Laos. Laos is a tropical country in the heart of Indochina and was once known as ‘The realm of a million elephants’. Set amid mountains and surrounded by China, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, Laos lay undiscovered for many years but today it is gradually opening its doors and its dreamlike royal cities, contemplative temple complexes, mysterious plains and ethnic mountain villages are now accessible to all. The capital, Vientiane, originated at the point at which the first navigable section of the Mekong River joins with the Gulf Of Thailand, once an important trading route to South China. We travel north into the pure Asia of bygone times, a land full of adventure where there is little tourism, past many villages with small markets at the roadside and vario...

I made this: It is a visual of the song "Dear Santa" by comedian Sean Morey as heard on the Bob & Tom morning radio show! This song is wrong in so many ways, but you can't help but laugh. Some of my own family members were used in this creation. Although not harmed in the making of this video, they were definitely taken advantage of. (haha, jk) Lyrics: Dear Santa, This is Billy from Dallas. I would like a Big Wheel with a air-conditioning package, power-steering, CD player and also a Sony Playstation. Dear Santa, This is Raul from Venezuela. I want a stick. To burn for heat! Dear Santa, This is Jessica from Aspen. I'd like a Barbie Dream House with the electric sports car, lots of outfits and matching outfits for me, too, please! Dear Santa, This is Lupe from Paraguay. I want some r...
A life on the road, many years of adventure cycling and many more years of this to come.
In November 2008, five friends flew from Mai Sai, in the far north of Thailand into the infamous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge. This is Chiang Rai province's most popular attraction, luring thousands of visitors annually. This notorious area, located approximately nine kilometres from the historic town of Chiang Saen, is bolstered by its history and the surrounding towns. It's riverfront position at the confluence of the Mekhong and Ruak rivers lends it a unique appeal. Located near the Northern-most point of Thailand - The Golden Triangle was once the centre of all opium poppy growing in the country, and actually refers to a large area of the three bordering countries. However, the point of actual convergence of these borders is what most peopl...

Muay Thai (Thai: มวยไทย, RTGS: Muai Thai, IPA: [mūɛj tʰāj]) is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. It is similar to other Indochinese kickboxing systems, namely pradal serey from Cambodia, tomoi from Malaysia, lethwei from Burma and muay Lao from Laos. The word muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya which means "to bind together". Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in other more regulated combat sports, such as kickboxing and savate.[5] A practitioner of muay Thai is known as a nak muay. Western p...

We travel north into the pure Asia of bygone times, a land full of adventure where there is little tourism, past many villages with small markets at the roadside and vario...

laos travel 2015 - southeast asia trip - around the world Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Since 1975, it has been ruled by a Marxist and communist government. Its population was estimated to be around 6.8 million in July 2014. Laos traces its history to the kingdom of Lan Xang, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century when it split into three kingdoms. In 1893, it became a French protectorate, with the three kingdoms — Luang Phrabang, Vientiane and Champasak — uniting to form what is now known as Laos. It briefly gained independence in 1945 after Japanese occupation, but returned to French rule until it was granted autonomy in 1949. Laos be...

Laos Travel Video Guide: After years of war and isolation, Southeast Asia's most pristine environment, intact cultures and quite possibly the most chilled-out people on earth mean destination Laos is fast earning cult status among travellers. It is developing quickly but still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region. Thailand promotes itself as amazing, Vietnam can well be described as bustling, Cambodia's Khmer temples are awe-inspiring... but the adjective that was most often applied to Laos is forgotten, this is changing fast however, with tourism being the biggest growth sector in Laos with ever rising visitor numbers under it's new tourism slogan 'Simply beautiful'. Visitors who are drawn by the laid-back lifestyle and the opportunity to watch th...

License Video: http://dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true Updated: Made the video a little more concise and the music a little bit more interesting and not repetitive. Take a deep breath and go on a journey around South East Asia through leech-infested jungles, abandoned temples, and colorful coral reefs. It was a 2 months trip that gone by so fast, like taking one deep breath. This is no ordinary "inspiring" travel video. For this, I decided to go with a much more fun and action-packed style instead of the usual go-to "inspirational" travel style that I like to do.. and a delicious "disco" music. Everything is better with disco music. :) I also experimented on many ways of shooting and framing and I think most of the footages came out really well. ...

WHY A TOUR IN ASIA? Attracted both by the beauty of Asia, we left our jobs to realise our dream: launch an online travel guide, while traveling six months through Asia. We already much traveled the world but we chose finally this continent because we always have lived strong and memorable experiences there. We defined our route following the dry seasons of each country. Eh yes! We studied tourism management and we are therefore very rigorous in the organization of a trip. This project gave a real goal to this trip: to discover even more, even further, limitless. After a few months, we found ourselves completely free of any prior, completely off the beaten tracks and we become true adventurers. And it is there, you really feel the joy, the pride of all the emotions experienced. It's crazy,...
First attempt at a trailer for the video of "the long way to Bangkok." I decided to make a few trailers just to give me a chance to practice before I go ahead and make the real thing - and to check all my software and hardware can cope with the HD video content. I'm off to the countryside tomorrow to do some Muay Thai for a couple of weeks so won't have another chance to practice for a little while - but will get to work on some more light hearted trailers! I hope this trailer conveys some of the epic scenes we encountered on our journey to Bangkok. The map is a bit blurred I know...need to find a higher res map so If anyone has one... All video content straight from the camera - always learning new things about video...I already wish I had taken more footage and used a higher contrast ...

Exploring the Golden Triangle near Laos & Myanmar. Language barrier, embrace it. Travel guide book, dump it. Fear of street food, chuck it. Liberate yourself from all that. Wake up expecting anything. Mai pen rai (no worries). Because "hey, you're in Thailand." Bike an uncharted oxcart path among lush rice paddies and garlic fields. Be startled by an ornate Buddhist temple quietly sitting in the middle of a jungle-filled valley. Relish a truly homemade curry and stare at the jagged limestone hills that have not changed for thousands of years. Say to yourself, "Is it Tuesday?" Even that doesn't matter because you're in Thailand. So mai pen rai.
