Installation view at Yamaguchi Center for Art and Media, Yamaguchi, Japan.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s public installation, "Amodal Suspension", was created to commemorate the opening of Japan’s Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media in 2003. Designed as a large-scale interactive installation, the public could use the website www.amodal.net to send short text messages to each other using a cell phone or web browser, however, rather than being sent directly, the messages were encoded as unique sequences of flashes with 20 robotically-controlled searchlights, turning the sky around Yamaguchi into a giant communication switchboard. Inspired in part by the Tanabata tradition of hanging wishes on bamboo, the project received over 400,000 unique visitors from 94 countries.

Film was taken in Reichstag's Dome - one of the main sights of Berlin and where shooting (photos and video) is officially allowed.
I have invited Frau Grunewald to visit this place. She is widely known in Berlin, due to her strange appearance and because she constantly works in the underground where she sells to passengers her self publishing texts and asks for the donation.
I asked her to rise under a dome, a symbol of German democracy and to explain, what she thinks about the power.
After 2 minutes and 50 seconds we were stopped by the security guards which has demanded to quit shooting and have forced us to leave a building.

Frau Grunewald: That is supposed to be the centre of power?
Ooh! You know what? The cold here is bothering me, but I’ll use my power to fight against it and stagger up here. Brrr.
You know what I’m thinking now: natural forces show us how powerful they are.
The forces that created us and that can destroy us, too – like the wind, the cold, a super nova in the universe, comets.
And we here, with our silly glass dome, think that THAT is a symbol of power.
If a star exploded that is a thousand years older than these walls, then that is a hell of a lot more important.
A glass house for the powerful!
Perhaps you can see a kind of symbolism in the fact that we are walking in a circle.
Everything swirls around in a circle.
The powerful, even the most powerful people are, ultimately, part of the circulation – ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Nothing remains of one’s corporeal existence, of one’s material existence, too.
And all these symbols of power are always material.
The are powerless against the circulation of being, against the phenomenon of time.
If there were no time animating everything then the powerful would be even more powerful than they are already.
Because power means that something happens; and when something happens, then time is being defined at that moment. When the big bang happened, when matter first appeared, when something happened – that was the basis for the definition of time.
I am of the opinion that before the big bang there was no time in the sense that it was not defined. Not in the sense in which we express, intuitively, that “there is something”. Do you understand what I mean with time?
Guard: Excuse me! hello! Why are you filming here?
Dmitry: I’m making a work of art.
Guard: You have to notify us in advance.
Dmitry:Why?
Guard: This is all protected by copyright law. You must notify us in advance of everything you want to film here.
Frau Grunewald: Okay, but I’m talking here! You don’t need to say anything.
Dmitry: But this is a private film recording.
Guard: You just told me that it was a work of art, right?
Dmitry: No, no. I didn’t express myself correctly. I think that everything would be art.
Guard: No, please turn the camera off.
Dmitry: But me and my friend are going for a walk. And it is our right to film here.
Guard: Turn the camera off. And I want to see your passport.
Dmitry: Okay. Fine.
Guard: Immediately!
Dmitry: We’re not criminals.
Frau Grunewald: Oh no! I’ve got to sit down somewhere.
Woman Guard: But you have to understand that this is the German Parliament.
Dmitry: I respect that fact.
Woman Guard: But in the German parliament there are rules, and the visitors must obey those rules.
Frau Grunewald: Tell me, is there a bus here? Downstairs? I’ve got to sit down.
Guard: You have to notify us in advance about these films and interviews. Interviews and films require advance notification.
Dmitry: But it is our personal right – to talk with people, with friends!

Interpassive is a "Plugin" for the interplay crates developed by Mizubitchy and Mario Riedel. Up to 50 modules supplied with battery-driven LED circuits are being activated when mobile phones in their surroundings are used. The seating modules are mobile and will provide the locations with a pulsating light. The interpassive boxes receive mobile phone activity within 2-3 meters while the LEDs are pulsating to the beat of the mobile networks. You probably know this pulse when your mobile comes close to a radio receiving a call. However their range is adjustable. You can actually interact with the boxes depending on how close you come, how high you hold your mobile phone etc. Generally the name Interpassive derives from the fact the installation is using peripheral information transmitted by the cellphone. Information which is actually of no use in this form; but information that is constantly surrounding us. The more visitors there are present at the bar and the more phone activity is taking place, the more the boxes flash. The interaction between boxes and visitors is supposed to develop as they will gradually recognise what's going on. A mobile phone in your pocket is enough to start the flashes. by Osman Khan and Daniel Sauter A television is placed facing the wall, its flickering glow reflecting off the wall and its sound echoing in the space. Its broadcast signal is simultaneously sent to a computer, where customized software processes the broadcast in real time by collapsing every frame of the television image into a one pixel-wide slice. These slices are horizontally arranged in sequence and projected back onto the wall next to the television set, showing an abstracted history of the broadcast signal. Cinematic cuts are transformed into clear vertical sections. Zooms become visualized as curves. Commercials and music videos are seen as vibrant vertical patterns and hectic splashes of color, while News programs are calming studies of horizontal smears. Visitors are encouraged to switch channels with the remote control and explore the relationship between the broadcast, its sound and the projection. In disconnecting the sound with the expected visuals and replacing it with an abstracted projection, the work oscillates the visitor's focus. Where the sound emitting from the television points to its sometimes triviality, the projection exposes the seductive nature of its images. This juxtaposition reveals the nature of television, at once both mesmerizing and banal.
The Visitor
Adam MacArthur disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle 50 years ago. Now he has escaped and has come back to help steer Earth away from a path of destruction. He travels the U.S. helping the right people put their lives on track, all the while being pursued by government agents and the aliens that abducted him.

These slices are horizontally arranged in sequence and projected back onto the wall next to the television set, showing an abstracted history of the broadcast signal. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s public installation, "Amodal Suspension", was created to commemorate the opening of Japan’s Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media in 2003. Designed as a large-scale interactive installation, the public could use the website www.amodal.net to send short text messages to each other using a cell phone or web browser, however, rather than being sent directly, the messages were encoded as unique sequences of flashes with 20 robotically-controlled searchlights, turning the sky around Yamaguchi into a giant communication switchboard. Inspired in part by the Tanabata tradition of hanging wishes on bamboo, the project received over 400,000 unique visitors from 94 countries.

Film was taken in Reichstag's Dome - one of the main sights of Berlin and where shooting (photos and video) is officially allowed.
I have invited Frau Grunewald to visit this place. She is widely known in Berlin, due to her strange appearance and because she constantly works in the underground where she sells to passengers her self publishing texts and asks for the donation.
I asked her to rise under a dome, a symbol of German democracy and to explain, what she thinks about the power.
After 2 minutes and 50 seconds we were stopped by the security guards which has demanded to quit shooting and have forced us to leave a building.

Frau Grunewald: That is supposed to be the centre of power?
Ooh! You know what? The cold here is bothering me, but I’ll use my power to fight against it and stagger up here. Brrr.
You know what I’m thinking now: natural forces show us how powerful they are.
The forces that created us and that can destroy us, too – like the wind, the cold, a super nova in the universe, comets.
And we here, with our silly glass dome, think that THAT is a symbol of power.
If a star exploded that is a thousand years older than these walls, then that is a hell of a lot more important.
A glass house for the powerful!
Perhaps you can see a kind of symbolism in the fact that we are walking in a circle.
Everything swirls around in a circle.
The powerful, even the most powerful people are, ultimately, part of the circulation – ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Nothing remains of one’s corporeal existence, of one’s material existence, too.
And all these symbols of power are always material.
The are powerless against the circulation of being, against the phenomenon of time.
If there were no time animating everything then the powerful would be even more powerful than they are already.
Because power means that something happens; and when something happens, then time is being defined at that moment. When the big bang happened, when matter first appeared, when something happened – that was the basis for the definition of time.
I am of the opinion that before the big bang there was no time in the sense that it was not defined. Not in the sense in which we express, intuitively, that “there is something”. Do you understand what I mean with time?
Guard: Excuse me! hello! Why are you filming here?
Dmitry: I’m making a work of art.
Guard: You have to notify us in advance.
Dmitry:Why?
Guard: This is all protected by copyright law. You must notify us in advance of everything you want to film here.
Frau Grunewald: Okay, but I’m talking here! You don’t need to say anything.
Dmitry: But this is a private film recording.
Guard: You just told me that it was a work of art, right?
Dmitry: No, no. I didn’t express myself correctly. I think that everything would be art.
Guard: No, please turn the camera off.
Dmitry: But me and my friend are going for a walk. And it is our right to film here.
Guard: Turn the camera off. And I want to see your passport.
Dmitry: Okay. Fine.
Guard: Immediately!
Dmitry: We’re not criminals.
Frau Grunewald: Oh no! I’ve got to sit down somewhere.
Woman Guard: But you have to understand that this is the German Parliament.
Dmitry: I respect that fact.
Woman Guard: But in the German parliament there are rules, and the visitors must obey those rules.
Frau Grunewald: Tell me, is there a bus here? Downstairs? I’ve got to sit down.
Guard: You have to notify us in advance about these films and interviews. Interviews and films require advance notification.
Dmitry: But it is our personal right – to talk with people, with friends!
Guard: No, you’re not allowed to. You should have notified the press department and obtained permission. You can talk to her, of course, but you are not allowed to film her and it is absolutely forbidden to show this film publicly.
Dmitry: Why can’t I film my girlfriend?
Guard: If this film, or this report, were to be shown anywhere publicly, we will take legal action against you…

Interpassive is a "Plugin" for the interplay crates developed by Mizubitchy and Mario Riedel. Up to 50 modules supplied with battery-driven LED circuits are being activated when mobile phones in their surroundings are used.
The seating modules are mobile and will provide the locations with a pulsating light. The interpassive boxes receive mobile phone activity within 2-3 meters while the LEDs are pulsating to the beat of the mobile networks.
You probably know this pulse when your mobile comes close to a radio receiving a call.
However their range is adjustable. You can actually interact with the boxes depending on how close you come, how high you hold your mobile phone etc.
Generally the name Interpassive derives from the fact the installation is using peripheral information transmitted by the cellphone. Information which is actually of no use in this form; but information that is constantly surrounding us.
The more visitors there are present at the bar and the more phone activity is taking place, the more the boxes flash.
The interaction between boxes and visitors is supposed to develop as they will gradually recognise what's going on. A mobile phone in your pocket is enough to start the flashes.
Interpassive wurde im Rahmen des Hamburger Architektur Sommers am Wochenende 24./25. Juli 2003 zum ersten Mal installiert und ist seit dem bei weiteren Veranstaltungen eingesetzt worden.
Interpassive had it's premiere during the Hamburg Architektur Sommer in July 2003.
The Artists:
Mizubitchy is a group of eight media design students. Since May 2002 they have been artists in resident at their experimental prototyping atelier based in neudeli, Weimar. Michael Pletziger and Matthias Weber are both contributing artists from Mizubitchy. www.mizubitchy.com
Mario Riedel is a dipl. engineer and associate at the interface design class at the Bauhaus-University of Weimar, faculty of media. He was a great help in developing the circuits for this installation.

A television is placed facing the wall, its flickering glow reflecting off the wall and its sound echoing in the space. Its broadcast signal is simultaneously sent to a computer, where customized software processes the broadcast in real time by collapsing every frame of the television image
into a one pixel-wide slice. These slices are horizontally arranged in sequence and projected back onto the wall next to the television set, showing an abstracted history of the broadcast signal. Cinematic cuts are transformed into clear vertical sections. Zooms become visualized as curves. Commercials and music videos are seen as vibrant vertical patterns and hectic splashes of color, while News programs are calming studies of horizontal smears. Visitors are encouraged to switch channels with the remote control and explore the relationship between the broadcast, its sound and the projection. In disconnecting the sound with the expected visuals and replacing it with an abstracted projection, the work oscillates the visitor's focus. Where the sound emitting from the television points to its sometimes triviality, the projection exposes the seductive nature of its images. This juxtaposition reveals the nature of television, at once both mesmerizing and banal.

Events that normally occur on/over a table (the placing of objects, the eating of food, hand gestures, etc…) are amplified through projection and become the basis for interactivity, ultimately changing the visitor's relation to the table. The installation setup is as follows: A camera is placed above the table, capturing events occurring on/over the table, which are sent to a computer, where customized software processes the image, so that non-white objects visually appear to stream their color down. This processed image is then projected back onto the table. Thus, a historic time line of events over the table is visualized as a continuous flow of images down the table. The installation also explored the notion of consumption. Brightly colored food and drink (which bleed their colors down the table) are placed on otherwise austere white tables. Visitors were encouraged to eat and drink, and in doing so consume the visually enticing elements (the colored foods) on the table, returning the tables to their blank state and thus ending the installations visually dynamic performance.

Turkish bath is an installation by Tetine made up of four projectors, realtime audio & original soundtrack.
Comprised of 16 men of different backgrounds, nationalities and age groups, all the participants were filmed in realtime between 2003 and 2004 in their private showers, bathtubs & toilets. It features approximately 16 hours of footage & conversations on various aspects of masculinity. The conversations are experienced together in the same space through separated sets of headphones available for visitors.
"Masculinity and its social, sexual and human unfoldings defined the main concept of Tetine's work comprised of a series of images of men in bathing situations (showers , bathtubs etc..) and their corresponding private spaces. The participants are 16 men who belong to different social classes, nationalities and age groups.
The images were taken as pre-performance based primarily upon the relationship between Tetine and the participant, the masculine and the private , including the clash with shame, embarrassment and exhibitionism - between intrusion and acceptance, between activity and passivity. Its major goal is to generate performance via the participant in relation to his image, space, speech, relation to his body and to others, beauty products a and veiled vanities. Some visual and sound identities that make up the work were created and worked upon in a series of pre-performances (the recording sessions). The process is complemented by the relations of ambiguity that exists during the negotiations, so that ideas associated with intimacy, identity, pleasure, relaxation, tension, voyerism, cliche, permissiveness and censorship are highlighted for the spectator. The images of the four screens are presented with differnt editing times, there maybe ocasional syncropnism in moments of total darkness in the space.
The conversations between Tetine and the participants are experienced together in the same space through headphones available for visitors".

The Cultural Free-haven ADMamsterdam is currently seriously threatened with eviction by the people behind the companies Amstellimo and Chidda vastgoed, who are in fact the heirs of the notorious and mafia related real-estate speculator, Bertus Lüske

The Cultural Free-haven ADMamsterdam is currently seriously threatened with eviction by the people behind the companies Amstellimo and Chidda vastgoed, who are in fact the heirs of the notorious and mafia related real-estate speculator, Bertus Lüske
They claim to have signed a lease for part of the terrain with Koole Maritime BV, which started out on October 1st. 2015
They summoned us to leave before August 1st. 2015 (and to take everything with us!), or face a fine of 50.000 euro's for every day after this date
Three (!) separate legal procedures have been started against us, as of yet
Around 130 residents, ranging from 0 to 80, are currently living between hope and fear
For over 18 years we've been creating a sustainable community, turning an abandoned and derelict shipbuilding-yard on the outskirts of Amsterdam, into a life laboratory and oasis for the free-spirited and thinkers, in co-operation with the nature around us, by our own means, and with no single cent of subsidy
All over the terrain there are various protected bird species, mammals and wild-flowers to be found, (So far officially established: natterjacks, bats, owls and orchids)
We've hosted around 900 concerts, 100 benefit-events for 3rd. parties, 40 festivals, 9 WinterGames, 7 Bakbrommer-races, 5 Robodocks, 3 SleazeFests and countless other public events
All in all around 100,000 visitors in total attended
We also support and perform at various other festivals and events in the Netherlands, Europe and the world.

Urban Textures. Employing the skills of architects, actors, musicians and visual artists active in graffiti, video, photography and multimedia and who are organically linked with the sub-cultural networks of urban and street art and music to enrich the visual, aural and tactile quality of the old area. Utilising a void (a long passageway) and outlying buildings on the opposing ends of a virtual corridor visitors will be taken on a journey abundant with living people, performers, images and sounds to re-discover the old, ruined or simply forgotten. Promoting the vibrant and thriving Bucharest underground scene with its origins and roots lying in the streets of the old city which unfortunately is invisible to many.

An overview of sound art, minimalism, avant-glitch noise, and bleep ambient-dominated soundscapes from 1956 to 2003 recorded in London, Berlin, L.A., Amsterdam, Glasgow, Stalingrad, Vienna, Beijing, Mumbai, Melbourne, Istanbul and others.

Matze’s music means going through electronica towards eclectic experimental spiced with Romanian voices and atmospheres from the turn of the century or the beginning of the new millennium.
17.30 Sunday people

The chill out project from ‘GrooveOholics’, their sound includes samples of Arab and Romanian folklore probably due to their mixed origin and appears to perfectly fit the history of the area.
18.30 DJ Dolphin boy
The Sound of smoke filled 50’s night clubs filtered through the ears of a very modern Scotsman. His highly collectable 10’’ have caused a stir on the downtempo scene.
20.30 Blanos Distruzos
(Vexxatu Vexx, Matze, Sultan, Ati)
They came together for the idea of ‘freesta’ wishing to experiment the interaction of samplers and sequencers, percussion and stories of Bucharest (by MC Vexx) . No concert is alike, it’s a continuous audio brainstorming, a project ‘under construction’, live creative sessions.

12.00 – 22.00 Enjoy and observe the graffiti murals and investigate the hidden and the shady nature of one of the many old city corridors, the passageway being a highly pressurized environment where the graffiti artist, architect and sound artist celebrate their intense cultural relationship with the energies of the underground culture of their city.

12.00 – 22.00 If the old derelict Bucharest city centre lacks something what first springs to mind is the near complete absence of green or clean spaces where the numerous neighbourhood children can spend their day. Continuing your journey through the passageway find yourself in an oasis, blooming inside the narrow restraints of the architectural surroundings.
Palmier
12.00 Sound Installation. The abandoned space of the former ‘Palmier’ café will be brought to life, playing with the concept of sound architecture. Palmier will be redecorated by introducing loudspeakers and playing the sound recorded in a lively bar to bring back its entertainment value.

The approach in Sparking Reaction was to help visitors engage with written text in an issues based exhibition – something most people often do little of in this situation. The physically and intellectually immersive space at the centre of Sparking Reaction aims to do this with large-scale animated text and images projected onto the floor and walls.
The text is revealed and concealed in a series of animations that intrigue and draw in visitors, and updated with visitors’ opinions. Steel polyhedral forms painted in pink UV reactive paint house interactives, and a pink UV lit tunnel leads to the entirely red Immersion Cinema – the first interactive cinema in the UK.
