Kosovo (/ˈkɒsəvoʊ, ˈkoʊ-/;Albanian: Kosova; Serbian Cyrillic: Косово) is a disputed territory and partially recognised state in Southeastern Europe that declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008 as the Republic of Kosovo. While Serbia recognises the Republic's governance of the territory, it still continues to claim it as its own Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija.
Kosovo is landlocked in the central Balkan Peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Pristina. It is bordered by the Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the south, Montenegro to the west, and the uncontested territory of Serbia to the north and east. In antiquity, the Dardanian Kingdom, and later the Roman province of Dardania was located in the region. It was part of Serbia in the Middle Ages, and many consider the Battle of Kosovo of 1389 to be one of the defining moments in Serbian medieval history. After being part of the Ottoman Empire from the 15th to the early 20th century, in the late 19th century Kosovo became the centre of the Albanian independence movement with the League of Prizren. As a result of the defeat in the First Balkan War (1912–13), the Ottoman Empire ceded the Vilayet of Kosovo to the Balkan League; the Kingdom of Serbia took its larger part, while the Kingdom of Montenegro annexed the western part before both countries became a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after World War I. After a period of Yugoslav unitarianism in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the post-World War II Yugoslav constitution established the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija within the Yugoslav constituent republic of Serbia.

Albanian/Serbo-Croat Albanian arms smugglers and Yugoslav troops have traded fire at several Kosovo border points, leaving at least four smugglers dead. There are also reports of clashes elsewhere in the rebellious province, where ethnic Albanians are fighting for independence from Serbia. The Kosovan authorities say they have confiscated large quantities of arms and ammunition following clashes in the border village of Vrbnica, 70 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of Pristina. There are a number of mountain passes that Albanian smugglers use to get arms across the border into Kosovo. Policing them from the air and on the ground is a hard task for the Yugoslav forces. When they spot suspected smugglers, the information is quickly relayed back and troops seal off the area. ...

Kosovo is currently seeing the worst case of political unrest since it declared independence from Serbia in 2008. A new European Union-brokered deal that would give the Serbian minority more local powers in the majority-Albanian country has proved to be the tipping point after a long period of dissatisfaction with the government. Opposition parties have come together to try and channel public opinion, organizing recent protests which have, in many cases, turned violent. The deeper issue, however, is that the country suffers from crippling unemployment, with 61 percent of its youth out of work. VICE News travels to Kosovo to see if the small Balkan country is showing signs of a failed state. We meet opposition leaders under house arrest, attend a protest where the government headquarters...

Serbo-Croat/Nat Yugoslavia's economy is still grappling with the aftermath of the Kosovo crisis. With its infrastructure in ruins following the heavy bombings of the NATO campaign, everyday items such as household essentials and fuel have been rationed. Over half the work force is unemployed and analysts say there little hope of a recovery in the immediate future. Aside from its bombed-out buildings, Belgrade seems like an ordinary European capital - traffic jams, streets packed with pedestrians and cafes full of customers. Scratch the surface, however, and very little else is normal. Street vendors sell gasoline in plastic Coke bottles. Workers receive no monthly salaries, retirees get no pensions. English/Nat The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (U-N-H-C-R) is expressing concern over health and security risks resulting from overcrowding in Macedonian refugee camps. Such concerns were also voiced by Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe chief monitor, William Walker when he visited the Lojane refugee camp in Macedonia. Walker says a lot of help is needed to solve hygiene problems and prevent major outbreaks of illness. Chief Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (O-S-C-E) monitor William Walker visited the Lojane refugee camp in Macedonia on Tuesday. http://www.euronews.com/ By granting greater autonomy to Serbian municipalities in northern Kosovo, the EU-brokered accord between Belgrade and Pristina sets a precedent in the country's history. Its aim is to end partition between Kosovo's Albanian majority and its minority Serbs. But the latter are unahappy with the deal, which still contains many grey areas and which they see as treason on the part of Belgrade. Local politicians are threatening to jeopardise its implementation. In the town of Mitrovica, divided between the Serbian population to the north and the Albanians in the south, tensions still run high. And concern is greater than hope within the Serbian community, which feels left out by the accord, the aim of which is to speed up EU accession talks for Serbia. "There will ...
English/Nat The United Nations raised concern on Thursday about the health care situation in Kosovo, saying Serb doctors who staffed most of the province's hospitals were fleeing in droves. The U-N said Kosovo's main hospital, Pristina University Hospital, was run directly from the Health Ministry in Belgrade and staffed and administered almost exclusively by Serbs. But almost every Serb member of staff has left in recent days as Yugoslav forces withdrew and the province's ethnic Albanians began to return from refugee camps in Albania and Macedonia. Albanian doctors and nurses are returning to work at Pristina hospital on Friday for the first time after a mass exodus of doctors when NATO air strikes first started British NATO K-F-O-R forces have secured the hospital so that ...

English/Nat The head of the Kosovo Verification Mission has called for a resolution of the Kosovo refugee crisis - before the onset of wintry weather in the Balkans. William Walker was speaking after visiting a crowded refugee camp in Albania. His visit came as newly-arrived refugees brought stories of abuse by Serbs troops in Kosovo. More refugees cross into Albania with their lives intact. They make up the tail end of a small wave of ethnic Albanians who crossed into Albania after a seven-day period of relative quiet at the Morini border crossing. The first refugees appeared at the mountain border post around midday on Friday. By nightfall, 37-hundred had reached the frontier. Most came from the Suva Reka area in Kosovo, where they said many homes had been destr...

UCK TERRORISTS VS THE HEROIC SERB ARMY
Natural Sound One year after the start of all-out fighting in Kosovo, Serb forces and rebels engaged in new clashes on Sunday that left a senior Serb police officer and two guerrillas dead and sent at least 2-thousand people fleeing. The battles in two locations continue a week of sporadic fighting that followed an inconclusive round of peace talks in Rambouillet, France. Western officials have voiced fears of a complete breakdown of the informal truce that, while not halting the violence, has prevented a recurrence of the province-wide combat that tore up Kosovo for most of 1998. In a major escalation of tension in Kosovo, ethnic Albanian rebels ambushed a police convoy Sunday near the Macedonian border, killing a station commander and wounding four other officers. ...
English/Nat The Kosovo Liberation Army has allegedly opened fire on a local school in the Kosovo village of Banic. United States NATO forces say that the action was probably just a show of strength from the K-L-A in one of the few villages where Serbs still live side by side with Albanians. In Banic, the locals do not want to see the K-L-A disarmed when they are so newly empowered. In the Kosovan village of Banic the local school came under fire on Sunday, allegedly from the K-L-A. Troops of the 82nd Airborne Division, which make up part of the American K-FOR contingent controlling the south-eastern sector of Kosovo, responded quickly. After a close inspection of the school, the U-S soldiers concluded that the shots had been fired not to kill, but as a show of K-L-A str...

Albanian/Nat In the face of NATO threats, Yugoslav forces continue battling ethnic Albanian rebels in Kosovo. The Serb army and police are involved in an offensive against suspected K-L-A targets in central Kosovo near the village of Srbica, 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Pristina. New fighting has also been reported in the northern Podujevo area and in the rebel stronghold region of Drenica. Meanwhile, Macedonian authorities closed border posts stemming the flow of thousands of ethnic Albanian refugees fleeing their homes. NATO airstrikes against Yugoslavia now appear imminent, barring a dramatic reversal in Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's resistance to a peace plan involving the presence of foreign troops. Albanian/Nat Serb police exchanged fire on Sunday with militant Kosovo Albanians seeking independence. Serb sources said one officer was wounded and an undetermined number of what they described as "terrorists" killed or wounded. Meanwhile ethnic Albanians protested in Pristina, Kosovo, against Serbian rule, demanding international intervention in their conflict with Belgrade's authorities. Serb police stood watch warily on the main road west of Pristina following reports of a gun battle in a nearby village. In Iglarevo, a village 45 kilometres (25 miles) west of Pristina, militants who say they belong to Kosovo Liberation Army or K-L-A exchanged fire on Sunday with Serb police.
