Chile (/ˈtʃɪli/;Spanish: [ˈtʃile]), officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: República de Chile ), is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas, and Easter Island in Oceania. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.
The arid Atacama Desert in northern Chile contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.

Plot: West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet". The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.

Chile's healthy economy and political stability is drawing more and more economic migrants from across Latin America to pursue 'the Chilean Dream.' The country's foreign-born population has doubled in the last five years, reaching 500,000 migrants. And that number is expected to double again in the next decade. The rapid population growth has spurred a major housing crisis, as thousands of migrant families have been unable to afford a place to live. VICE News correspondent Daniel Hernandez meets camp residents, activists, and politicians to explore how the face of Chile is changing in the wake the migration boom. One of the classic Chilean snack food dishes worth trying when visiting Santiago is something called Chorrillana. This dish, which is worth sharing with a friend of two, is basically a mountain of french fries with sliced beef, fried egg and fried onion on top. We've now had it enough times to realize no two restaurants make it the same. We've seen fried egg versus scrambled egg, tenderloin versus sliced sausage and several different ways of preparing the onion. At the restaurant we filmed this video (Galindo) they prepared it with tenderloin, scrambled egg and caramelized onions. We've also heard of chorizo, tomatoes and even bananas being thrown on top of the fries! It's the kind of dish, much like poutine in Canada, where you can play around with it to suit any kind of taste. Regardless...

For lunch we visited one of our favorite restaurants in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to try eating Chilean Empanadas (Empanadas Chilenas). We're certainly no strangers to eating empanadas. In fact, they were served during our wedding and I've learned how to make them at Audrey's parents house. However, it was our first time to try Chilean empanadas. Compared to Argentinian empanadas they're massive and shaped more like an envelope as opposed to a half moon. We ended up ordering two massive ones (Empanadas de Pino: Beef empanadas with black olives, onions, eggs and raisins - Empanadas de Tomate, Queso y Albahaca: Cheese empanadas with tomato and basil). They were absolutely delicious and ended up being large enough to have for lunch as opposed to just merely a snack. Empanadas Chilenas: Ea...

Health Care in Chile from "International Health Care Systems". Chile has often been a regional health system innovator. One of the first Latin American countries to adopt a Bismarckian social security system that provides white-collar workers with health insurance funded by a salary tax, Chile also created a state-run National Health System in the 1950s, based on the British National Health Service model and funded by general tax revenue. Although the social security system provided insurance to salaried employees who contributed a portion of their salaries, Chile did not set up a separate social security delivery system, instead funding public services and later providing access to private clinics. Kicking some spice into your diet is a great way to boost your metabolism, lower blood pressure, and even reduce stress. Many people reach for hot sauces like Siracha and Tapitio without knowing they contain sodium benzoate, a preservative that deprives your cells of oxygen and break down the immune system. In this episode of Health Nuts we show you how to make a delicious hot sauce with Chile de Arbol (you can substitute jalapenos or any other spicy chiles) to add some spark your dishes. Additional Tip: You can boil the left over seeds from the chilis in water. Once cooled, add to a spray bottle and spray the water on your garden plants. It works great as an organic pesticide. Recipe: 50 to 60 dried chiles de arbol 2 tablespoons sesame seeds 2 tablespoons shelled pumpkin seeds (pepitas)...

Many of these companies are based in Pucón, in the Lake District, with a good sprinkling of other outfitters spread throughout the south. There are fewer opportunities for outdoor activities in the harsh deserts of the north, where altiplano jeep trips and mountain biking are the main options. If you plan to do take part in adventurous activities, be sure to check that you’re covered by your travel insurance, or take out specialist insurance where necessary. Rafting and kayaking Chile’...

As the longest, thinnest country in the world, Chile stretches all the way from the borders with Bolivia and Peru in the north, 4,500ks to Tierra del Fuego in the south, and yet at its widest point it, in the Atacama Desert, is only 400ks across. Our trip to Chile wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the capital, so towards the end of our stay we decided to visit Santiago. We had 4 days to discover what the city was all about, so we set out to visit the main attractions, sample Chilean food (Comida Chilena), and explore various neighborhoods on foot. "Los Colores de Chile", Chile is one hell of a colorful country, from the green of Easter Island, the Yellow of Atacama to the Blue of Patagonia! Easter Island! After 4 years of wanting to visit the island, I've finally made it and wow, was it well worth the effort! As I was traveling down from Atacama desert through Santiago to Patagonia, I'd seen the wonderful port city of Valparaiso, summited Villarrica volcano in Pucon, hiked the famous Torres del Paine trail in Patagonia and ended my Chile trip at the Easter Island. Easter Island was definitely the highlight of the trip as you can see in the video. I rented a quad bike and drove around the island for a few days, enjoying the clear sky, lying on my bike under the clearest Milky Way stars I've ever seen, watching the sunrise behind t...

When we presented the stunning short-film ‘Experience Imagination: In South America’ earlier this year, the response we received was overwhelming – they wanted more, and so did we. Fortunately for all of us, the talented filmmakers who brought us part one -- the first dose of their incredible experience on a 4-month journey through South America -- didn't make us wait too long for the second video. The new short-film, ‘In South America: Untamed Winds’ follows lifelong friends, and filmmakers, Vincent Urban, Clemens Krüger, and Stefan Templer on a four-month road trip through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and southern Brazil. Along the way, they witnessed the continent's natural beauty and were confronted with difficult weather conditions. “I hope a viewer is able to feel the time passing,...

W-TREK-TORRES DEL PAINE (5D/4N): (Lodging in refugios, Mountain huts) This is our most popular trip in Torres Del Paine; we hike the whole W trail, from hut to hut. We include bedding so you don’t need to bring a sleeping bag, but you need to carry a backpack with your personal belongings. We start and finish in Puerto Natales, so if you are in Punta Arenas, you’ll need to take a private transfer or a public bus to Puerto Natales (3 hours). The trek starts around noon on Day 1 from Puerto Natales. The Refugios (mountain huts) are cozy with sharing rooms (bunk bed style) and communal bathrooms. The trek includes a private bilingual guide and private transfer in/ out from Puerto Natales. We hike to the lookout point of the towers on day 2 (you’ll just need a day pack because its a round t...
In a remote area of Torres del Paine National Park, the wild Patagonian horses roam the steppe after escaping the gauchos’ domesticity. Patagonia is home to these untamed horses - masters of their surroundings, owned by no one and glimpsed only by those who have learned their language: Patagonia's master trackers. This is our fastest way to visit the three main valleys of the famous W trail, in Torres del Paine National park: we start early morning from Puerto Natales, with a private transfer and a professional bilingual guide/driver. We drive to the park (2 hours) and start right away a round trip hike to the lookout point of the towers. Then we drive to our secluded & confortable riverside camp to spend the night and enjoy a welcome dinner. On day 2 we drive to Pehoe Lake, cross it by catamaran and start our second round trip hike to the French valley (6-8 hours), spending our second night at the Riverside camp. On day 3 we do a half day hike to the less visited Pingo valley in search of the elusive Huemul (Andean deer), in the afternoon we navigate to the front wall of Glacier Grey and then we ta...

A selection of nightscape scenes I put together for entry into the 2012 David Malin Awards. The awards are for images of the night sky and landscape captured by Australian astrophotographers. I am very happy and honoured that the video won 1st prize in the ‘animation’ category at the 2012 awards. A number of interesting sky and space phenomena are included in the clip: 1. Be who you are
If it fits in the system
Say what you want
But you might die if they listen
They think in the politics of gasoline and torture
Please only talk to me in the dark
Please only talk to me in the dark
Write what you will
If you write in a prison
Sing how you feel
But you might die if they listen
They think in the politics
Of rosaries and chains
And its hard to tell the right from the wrong
When the right is protecting the wrong
Be who you are
But not where there are people
Reality is taught
Right and wrong, there is no middle
We think in politics
