Maigret's Mistake (1977) tr. Jean Stewart
bibliography entry films / television
Maigret of the Month: January, 2011
M investigates a death by poisoning in the seedy little 'Special Bookshop' in the Rue Saint-Denis - books for 'connoisseurs'. Émilienne, the young assistant, has been found dead of an overdose of sleeping pills in her tea. M suspects the owner, Eugène Labri, a greasy, obsequious type M has difficulty avoiding punching in the face. He'd found a packet of love letters to Labri from Émilienne. Labri assures him he has no reason to kill her, as he's sold the shop, and included her with the inventory. A call from Lucas with the autopsy reveals she'd been a virgin, and M understands his mistake. She'd killed herself when realizing that the man she thought loved her, in her innocent sense, regarded her simply as part of the merchandise. M allows himself the pleasure of the punch in the face.
Émilienne | Labri, Eugène | Lucas |
