British Transport Films presents the dramatic story of the outstanding engineering feat of Thomas Andrew Walker in the 19th century which enabled the building of the famous Severn Tunnel, the longest underwater tunnel in the world to be completed at that time. The film is in particular a tribute in sight and sound of the unique group of six magnificent Cornish beam engines which kept the tunnel free of water for over seventy years before being replaced by electric pumps. An interesting drama made in 1959, "Beyond this place" (aka. Web of evidence) starred Van Johnson, who returning home from the war discovers that his father, whom he thought dead, is actually in prison serving a life sentence for the murder of a girl. Detremined to prove his father's innocence, he is helped by a local newspaper editor who supports the case. The American stars are somewhat miscast in this fairly predictable film, but there is some interesting location footage of Liverpool in the 1950s, and direction is in the capable hands of Jack Cardiff. This film was shown on C4 about 1990, but since then seems to have been largely unseen, with no VHS or dvd release. If a dvd release is announced, or if the copyright holder objects, I will remove the film immediately. An excellent supp...
IIHS 50th anniversary demonstration test • September 9, 2009 In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy. "It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "What this test shows is that automakers don't build cars like they used to. They build them better." The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute's 1959 founding, i...

1959 was the seismic year jazz broke away from complex bebop music to new forms, allowing soloists unprecedented freedom to explore and express. It was also a pivotal year for America: the nation was finding its groove, enjoying undreamt-of freedom and wealth social, racial and upheavals were just around the corner and jazz was ahead of the curve. Four major jazz albums were made, each a high watermark for the artists and a powerful reflection of the times. Each opened up dramatic new possibilities for jazz which continue to be felt Miles Davis Kind of Blue Dave Brubeck, Time Out Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah Um; and Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come. Rarely seen archive performances help vibrantly bring the era to life and explore what made these albums vital both in 1959 and the 5...

He'd Brycreamed his hair and straightened his tie
When he walked out the dorr he'd kiss his mother goodbye
He's got the keys to his father's FJ
He's taking out Jenny it's their first date
He knocks on her door and he can hear his heart pound
Her father appears and looks him up and down
He said 'Jen won't be long so you'd better come in'
And he waits on the couch, flowers in his hand
CHORUS
There's been so many changes down through the years
There's been so many good things left behind
You can call me sentimental but I really wouldn't mind
If you wrap me up and send me back to 1959
They'd go to a dance JOK would be there
And she'd look so pretty ponytail in her hair
He plucked up the courage to take her hand in his
And there on her doorstep they stole their first kiss
CHORUS
They fell in love and they remember the night
When he nervously asked her would you be my bride
When they made thta promise 'till death do us parth
You know that they meant it straight from the heart
There's been so many changes down through the years
There's been so many good things left behind
You can call me sentimental but I really wouldn't mind
If you wrap me up and send me back to 1959
