Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band was in fine form at the 2017 UK Pipe Band Championships held on 10 June at the Stormont Estate in Belfast. The band, directed by Pipe Major Richard Parkes with Drum Sergeant Keith Orr, was placed first in the Grade One competition winning both the Grade One Championship and the Drumming Championship.
The band was playing a new medley that sparkled with wit and invention. The tunes were:
Edison, Morning Blossoms, The Piper's Bonnet,
Nameless Air, Jane Campbell, The Braes of Forbes,
Richard Dwyer's, The Hard Drive.
The weather looks beautiful, and it was sunny and warm as Belfast found itself between two wet weather fronts, but there was a very blustery wind.

Field marshal
Field marshal is a very senior military rank, ordinarily senior to the general officer ranks. Usually it is the highest rank in an army, and when it is, few (if any) persons are appointed to it. Considered as a five-star rank (OF-10) in modern-day armed forces in many countries.
The origin of the term dates to the early Middle Ages, originally meaning the keeper of the king's horses (from Old German Marh-scalc = "horse-servant"), from the time of the early Frankish kings.
Promotion to the rank of field marshal in many countries historically required extraordinary military achievement by a general (a wartime victory). However, the rank has also been used as a divisional command rank and also as a brigade command rank. Examples of the different uses of the rank include Austria-Hungary, Prussia and Germany for an extraordinary achievement; Spain and Mexico for a divisional command (Spanish: mariscal de campo); and France, Portugal and Brazil for a brigade command (French: maréchal de camp, Portuguese: marechal de campo).

Marshal
Marshal (also spelled marshall) is a term used in several official titles in various branches of society. As marshals became trusted members of the courts of Medieval Europe, the title grew in reputation. During the last few centuries, it has been used for elevated offices, such as in military rank and civilian law enforcement.
Etymology
"Marshal" is an ancient loanword from Old (Norman) French (cf. modern French maréchal), which in turn is borrowed from Old Frankish *marhskalk (="stable boy, keeper, servant"), being still evident in Middle Dutch maerscalc, marscal, and in modern Dutch maarschalk (="military chief commander"; the meaning influenced by the French use).
It is cognate with Old High German mar(ah)-scalc "id.", modern German (Feld-)Marschall (="military chief commander"; again, the meaning influenced by the French use).
It originally and literally meant "horse servant", from Germanic *marha- "horse" (cf. English mare and modern German Mähre, meaning "horse of bad quality") and skalk- "servant" (cf. Old Engl. scealc "servant, soldier" and outdated German Schalk, meaning "high-ranking servant"). This "horse servant" origin is retained in the current French name for farrier: maréchal-ferrant.

Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band was in fine form at the 2017 UK Pipe Band Championships held on 10 June at the Stormont Estate in Belfast. The band, directed by Pipe Major Richard Parkes with Drum Sergeant Keith Orr, was placed first in the Grade One competition winning both the Grade One Championship and the Drumming Championship.
The band was playing a new medley that sparkled with wit and invention. The tunes were:
Edison, Morning Blossoms, The Piper's Bonnet,
Nameless Air, Jane Campbell, The Braes of Forbes,
Richard Dwyer's, The Hard Drive.
The weather looks beautiful, and it was sunny and warm as Belfast found itself between two wet weather fronts, but there was a very blustery wind.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, independent India's best-known soldier, has died; he was 94. Manekshaw spent his final days at a military hospital in Wellington; he had developed several medical complications. Manekshaw was affectionately called Sam Bahadur because of his association with the Gorkha Rifles. He died a little after midnight with his immediate family by his side.

German Field Marshal Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist carrying a baton comes out from a building, talks briefly with US Army Major General Willard S. Paul, and gets into an American half ton truck in Mitterfels,Germany, one day after his capture by American forces. The truck, with Major General Paul in the back seat, is driven away. It stops and Field Marshal von Kleist salutes Generalleutnant Josef Russwurm, Inspector of Army Signals Troops, who was also captured by the US Army 26th Infantry Division. Rußwurm seen beside the truck. The truck drives away again. Location: Mitterfels Germany. Date: April 26, 1945.

Erich von Manstein, for instance, categorically declined the recruiting efforts of the conspirators with the words: "German field marshals do not mutiny".Profiling these men, the series asks why it all happened. Rommel, Keitel, Paulus, Udet, Canaris and Manstein - six careers caught in the tangle between obedience and crime. What led all these officers to put their military talents at the service of a murderous dictator? To what depth was their involvement in Hitler´s crimes? To what limits did their obedience lead them?
