Peru (i/pəˈruː/; Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw [pɪɾʊw];Aymara: Piruw [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú ), is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an extremely biodiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.
Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies. Ideas of political autonomy later spread throughout Spanish America and Peru gained its independence, which was formally proclaimed in 1821. After the battle of Ayacucho, three years after proclamation, Peru ensured its independence. After achieving independence, the country remained in recession and kept a low military profile until an economic rise based on the extraction of raw and maritime materials struck the country, which ended shortly before the war of the Pacific. Subsequently, the country has undergone changes in government from oligarchic to democratic systems. Peru has gone through periods of political unrest and internal conflict as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said that authorities are prepared to provide shelter and relief to those left homeless. Muddy water spilled onto streets and into homes on Thursday in a new round of unusually heavy rains that has killed at least a dozen people in Peru and now threatens flooding in the capital. The intense rains and mudslides over the past three days have wrought havoc around the Andean nation and caught residents in Lima, a desert city of 10 million where it almost never rains, by surprise. In one of the more dramatic incidents, stunned residents watched and took out cellphone cameras as a woman escaped after being swept into an avalanche of mud, wood debris and farm animals about 53 kilometers (32 miles) south of downtown Lima. Evangelina Chamorro, 32, had just droppe...
In April 1990, the classic lineup of Guns N' Roses played its final show. The occasion was the nationally televised Farm Aid concert, a disastrous set that included, among several bizarre highlights, , and Axl Rose ending the live broadcast with a climactic "." It was the mark of a band breaking apart. Why did Slash sneak a mountain lion into the Four Seasons? Amazingly, though, the imploding GN'R were in the midst of an artistic surge. One of the songs played at Farm Aid (in a version hampered by Adler's inability to learn it) was "Civil War," a sweeping epic that would eventually open the second disc of the massive 30-song, two-and-a-half-hour opus they were hard at work on throughout 1990 and '91. Slash would later liken Use Your Illusion I and II to the Beatles' White Album (though...

Peruvian cuisine continues to win popularity worlwide. CCTV's Dan Collyns reports that food is becoming the engine of Peru's developing economy and is driving job creation in the region.
Think of Brazil and the Olympics, Football and Carnival come to mind but samba back to the early 2000s and Brazil was the poster child for the emerging markets. Back in the late twentieth century Brazil’s economy had been anything but stable. Plagued by hyperinflation, the government at the time took desperate measures to ensure the currency stabilised. They did this by simply getting rid of it over a number of years and replacing it with one pegged to the value of the dollar. By the turn of the millennium “Plano Real” as it was called, started to pay dividends and after forty years of economic turmoil, inflation finally levelled off and the economy began to thrive. Brazil’s climate makes it an agricultural hotspot with coffee, sugar, soybean, meat and tobacco high on its list of raw expor...
Over the past five years, economic conditions for 7 million Peruvians have improved to the point where they are no longer considered living in poverty. This leap is historic, but not everyone is feeling the positive effects. While poverty is down in many cities dropping from 42 percent in 2001 to 16 percent in 2013. Peru has been widely hailed as an example of inclusive growth and turning economic progress into poverty reduction. CCTV America’s Dan Collyns reports.
In the midst of a global economic recession, one Latin American country is thriving: Peru. Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru, Luis Miguel Castilla Rubio, explains why Peru is Latin America's shining star.

CCTV's Dan Collyns in Peru reports on the country's currency appreciation and their purchase of at least 4 billion U.S. dollars in 2013 to hold down their national currency. Peru has the fastest growing economy in South America and the government wants to keep growth at a positive rate. The country's central bankers are worried inflation can stall growth. Later, Phillip Yin is joined by Francisco Durand, University of Texas Professor, to speak on the subject.
For more on the relations between China and Peru, CCTV America's Rachelle Akuffo spoke to Kevin Gallagher, author of "The China Triangle".
Lima, the capital of Peru, is a sprawling metropolis of about 10 million people. Known as the "city of kings", it was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century and became an important centre of the Spanish empire in South America. Over generations, people from around the world have settled in the vibrant city, resulting in a mix of cultures and cuisines. Previously Lima was not much more than a transit point for tourists going to the ancient city of Cusco and the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. But the tourism industry has grown and tourists are spending more time and money in Lima's restaurants. Peru's economy may be booming and the status of the nation's cuisine on the rise, but poverty is still rife. Gloria Villanueva Reyes is one of thousands of women working in P...

This week our host Mauricio Izquierdo takes us to Peru, where Chinese culture thrives among indigenous customs. Chinese immigrants have been able to retain many of their ancient traditions while fully integrating themselves into Peruvian culture. Approximately five million people with Chinese last names now live in Peru. Then it’s off to the Andes where we hear the sounds of ancient sikuri music now being kept alive by a group of artists that practice indigenous ways of life. Although the Spanish conquerors tried to wipe out all traces of indigenous music, it is alive and well today. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/cultura-latina-463146/

In addition to being perhaps the friendliest, most welcoming city in Peru, Lima offers myriad opportunities to experience the culture of the country. Religious festivals where icons of the virgin are carried through the streets for hours on end, traditional dance performances, and street musicians abound in the historic old city around Plaza de Armas, which is also home to some of the most magnificent colonial architecture in the country. Peru has long faced a disparity in the quality of healthcare services provided by well-equipped urban clinics versus those in more rural areas. Her dedication to her community, together with a performance improvement methodology developed by USAID's Quality Healthcare Program, has made Flor de Primavera a shining example of how quality service can lead to both increased demand for healthcare and better health outcomes.

Spanish/Nat Peruvian authorities are cracking down on illegal pig farms, which they say are becoming dangerous to human health. The farms - most of which are located around rubbish dumps - provide a large percentage of the meat sold in markets. Illegal pig farms like this one in Puerto del Callao are commonplace in Peru. Officials say hundreds of pigs are raised here in unhealthy conditions and then slaughtered. They are then taken to the market where each day their meat is sold to thousands of consumers. Most pig farms are located in small shanty-towns surrounded by large rubbish dumps. This one in Puerto del Callao, 20 kilometres west of Lima, is hidden in the mountains. But health officials manage to find it anyway. They say the farms are becoming ha...
Nearly 11,000 doctors from public hospitals have stopped working and embarked on strike action in Peru. Many are now beginning their second month of strike action in a bid for higher salaries and better working conditions in a sector where they often earn less than taxi drivers. Medical professionals are now threatening to abandon hospitals completely if the government fails to meet their demands by next week. This could leave tens of thousands of patients abandoned inside hospitals. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports from Lima.

Despite the United Nations confirming in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world's top coca and cocaine producer, the country’s place atop the drug supply chain has — at least so far — not included the levels of violence seen in Colombia, Mexico, and other international narcotics hubs. The frontlines of Peru’s war on cocaine are restricted to remote coca-producing basins, where drug laboratories and illegal landing strips are abundant. But the government’s campaign of crop eradication and efforts to destroy narco runways risk further igniting a larger social conflict, alienating the coca farmers whose livelihoods depend on growing the illicit crop. Spanish/Nat Peruvian authorities have burned more than six-thousand kilogrammes of drugs in their first drug-burning operation this year. The drugs, including marijuana, cocaine and opium, had an estimated value of 174 (m) million dollars. The government claims that with the success of its anti-drug operation, Peru is no longer the number one producer of coca leaves. It was the first massive drug-burning of the year in Peru. Plastic bags full of marijuana, cocaine, opium and other drugs represent what the Peruvian government claim is its success in the war against drugs. These bags contain more than six-thousand kilogrammes of drugs, confiscated in the latest drug raids throughout the country. Thanks to these anti-drugs operations, Peru claims it is no longer the world...
Is Peru’s New Anti-drugs Policy Too Tough Even for Washington? Could the United States defund counter-narcotics efforts in Peru, the world’s top producer of cocaine? That’s the question after Peru’s single chamber congress voted unanimously 89-0 this week to resume shooting down the small aircraft suspected of ferrying up to 150 tonnes of the drug, roughly half of national production, out of the Andean country every year. President Ollanta Humala, a former army officer who prides himself on his no-nonsense approach to drug traffickers, is expected to sign the measure into law. Although Washington has long used a carrot-and-stick approach to pressure Peru and the two other cocaine-producing nations, Colombia and Bolivia, to interdict more of the illegal export, it has also opposed a shoot ...

A stand located in the main hall of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) offered coffee and chocolate produced in the framework of the Alternative Development Program created by Peru's DEVIDA. There were numerous attendees of the 59th Commission of Narcotic Drugs (CND), UN staff and guests who tried and highlighted the good quality and taste of the organic products. The visitors had the chance to learn about the successful story of Kevin Vidal and Wilder Ruíz, two producers from Pangoa (Junín Region) who changed illegal coca for coffee and cacao crops.
Peru has long been one of the world's largest producers of coca, the plant often used to produce cocaine. It figures alongside Afghanistan, Columbia and Mexico in the list of countries where growing plants that can yield narcotics is a multibillion-dollar industry. Although Peru has seen a recent surge in the coca production, a United Nations initiative is helping farmers in the city of Tocache abandon coca and find alternative crops. Officials think they can replicate the town's success in other farming areas. Al Jazeera's Rosiland reports. [March 2, 2010]
(3 Aug 2016) Peruvian authorities said they seized 1.2 tons of drugs destined for sale overseas. Bags of the seized drugs - mainly cocaine - were subjected to chemical tests and shown to the media. Luis Pantoja, Peru's anti-narcotics police chief, said 98 people accused of smuggling drugs across the border had been arrested this year. He highlighted that 16 of those arrested were heading to Brazil and added that his department was investigating if there was a higher demand for illicit drugs because of the influx of people to the Olympic Games. Two British women held on drug trafficking charges in Peru could return to the UK to serve their sentence if they plead guilty in a Peruvian court. Full Story: Two British women who have been charged in Peru with drug trafficking could strike a plea deal with authorities and finish serving their sentences in the United Kingdom, said a prosecutor on Tuesday. Michaella McCollum Connolly, of Dungannon in Northern Ireland, and Melissa Reid, from near Glasgow in Scotland, were arrested at Lima airport last month. Twenty-four pounds of cocaine worth 1.5-million pounds was found in their luggage. The pair are reportedly facing a maximum penalty of 15 to 18 years imprisonment. But Peruvian counter narcotics prosecutor Luis Mendoza says the British citizens could get their sentences drastical...
Cocaine Factories - Bolivia - The Bolivian government's new stance on Coca leaf plantations being legal, has the USA worried about the consequences. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=57110 Evo Morales swept to power promising a social revolution which included legalising coca cultivation. A year on, America is so worried Bolivia is becoming a 'Narco State', it's slashed funding. "These are the coca leaves that we step on. This is the paste", states Roberto, showing us around his cocaine factory in the jungle. Promoting alternative uses of coca, such as in tea, is the heart of the government's policy. "The coca leaf is a cultural issue and part of our identity", explains Minister Felipe Casares. Officially, the jungles of Bolivia are producing fewer...
Anti-narcotics officers in Peru have reported an uptake in the arrest of drug traffickers in Lima's international airport heading for Brazil, with demand expected to soar for the Rio Olympics. According to Peru's anti-drugs body Dirandro, 92 traffickers have been captured at the airport, many bound for Brazil. Peru is one of the world's biggest producers of cocaine and, according to Dirandro, Brazil is a major consumer nation. As drugs surveillance steps up at Lima's international airport, so too do the efforts of traffickers to get drugs across into South America's largest economy.
This was a true multi-sport adventure we had in Peru with so many activities checked off our list of things to do. Over the period of two and half weeks, we visited, Lima where we cycled, toured the beaches, walked the city and explored the magic fountains in the Parque de la Reserva all before our G Adventures tour started. From Lima, we made our way to Cusco with our new friends from G Adventures and our CEO (chief experience officer). In Cusco, we traveled to the Scared Valley, and on our mountain bikes, explored the surrounding mountains, Inca ruins and the Maras Salt Mines. Making our way back to Cusco, we took one first of two “rest” days and used it to zip line across the tops of two mountain peaks. Now the main event was to hike the Inca Trail and make our way to Machu Picchu. Aft...

Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco. As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a na...
In Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, magnificent ruins await the adventurous traveler. The most famous of all is Machu Picchu. Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city. In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Ma...

DESFILE MILITAR PERU DEL 29 DE JULIO DEL 2017
Peru is facing a water crisis. Groundwater supplies are rapidly vanishing and the poorest have no access to water. The cause – the country’s farming boom. What’s it like to live without running water? In Peru’s sprawling capital, Lima, this is the everyday reality for 1.5 million children and adults, forced to pay up to a week’s salary for just one day’s water. And the problem isn’t confined to the capital, across the country, the shortage of water is putting lives in danger and provoking conflict, as it displaces communities and threatens their agricultural livelihoods. Climate change is partly to blame, but in this film we explore how European consumers are making this crisis worse. The fruit and vegetables - avocados, asparagus and exotic fruits - that end up on our supermarket shelv...
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The United Nations announced in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world’s top producer of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. For the past two decades, Colombia has been virtually synonymous with cocaine. Now that Peru has become the global epicenter of cocaine production, the Andean nation runs the risk of becoming the world’s next great narco state. The Peruvian government is trying to crack down on the problem by ramping up eradication of coca plants, and devoting military and police resources to interdiction efforts. Despite the response — and a hefty amount of foreign aid devoted to combatting cocaine production — Peruvian coke is being consumed in the nightclubs of Lima and in cities ...

Ein gebrochener Arm, ein gebrochenes Herz
Mitten im Höhenflug, ein Häufchen Elend
Dann diese Augen, Dein Blick
Bringt die Wende, bringt mir Glück
Hast mich getröstet, hast mich gepflegt
Bedingungslos, freier Eintritt in meine Seele
Schlafende Geister geweckt
Dummheit gedeckt
Neuen Mut in mich hineingelacht
Oh, nimm Dir, was ich brauch'
