This is the video of "Pond Creek", first track from the album "Seven More Days to Someday" by DoubleWide Debris.
One week after filling the new expansion to our bass pond, we returned to find that it did not hold water to the level of the original pond - it had lost at least 1.5 feet in depth. It took the entire weekend pumping water from a nearby stream using two pumps to restore the depth achieved the week before. I was expecting a certain amount of water loss, but not this much. Hopefully, the disappearing water is due to loose, uncompressed soil and clay that makes up the berm. Only time will tell. If the new pond cannot match and maintain the same water level as the original pond, then I will not join the two ponds. Meanwhile, to test the quality of the water, and to satisfy our impatience, we captured at least a dozen small and medium-sized Creek Chub using a fish trap in the nearby stream, and released them into the new pond. Admittedly, we feel a little guilty transporting healthy stream fish to a new, untested stagnate environment and with no food source. So, to appease my guilt, I ordered a new Fish Mate automatic fish feeder thinking that at least the Creek Chubs will have something to munch on next week - providing they have survived their new environment, and the predators who are anxiously awaiting an easy meal!

We built a pond on our farm a few years ago. It was a great addition! The pond is 4.5 acres and has a creek flowing into it. That means it is large enough that is doesn't get gross, and we fish and swim in it. It cost a fair amount, but it also doubles as water storage so I can irrigate my fields in summer droughts.
For those interested, we paid $25k, which includes clearing of the site, burning brush, building the dam, including pipe cost and installation. That's a lot of money, but I figure I would rather drive my dodge pickup and own a pond, rather than driving a lexus. ;-) The pipe is schedule 40 PVC, 12" horizontal, 18" riser. Why is the riser bigger? A vertical pipe in this configuration won't fill completely or flow efficiently. Basically, the 12" pipe carries just as much water as the 18" pipe can deliver to it. And 12" is MUCH cheaper than 18".
We stocked the pond with fish about 1 year after it filled, allowing the sediments to settle and wash out first. We added a typical fish combination for our area, of bass, bluegill, sunfish, and catfish.

Our original source for the fiddle tune "Pond Creek Bottom." It's Otis Reynolds as I recorded him at THE local filling station in Geff, Illinois in December of 1977.
The filling station was a popular oldtimer hangout, replete with the air hose bell that signaled a new customer pulling in. That's the faint "ding" you can hear at 0:57 into the tune.
Otis tuned his fiddle several pitches below standard, which for this tune only added to the spookieness that attended the reputation of Pond Creek Bottom, which was local to the Geff and Fairfield, IL area.
Legends about Pond Creek Bottom were numerous and dark. Back in Prohibition days, people had up and "disappeared" down in them bottoms. Thank you, Mr. Otis Reynolds (1899-1992).

Pond
A pond is a body of standing water, either natural or artificial, that is usually smaller than a lake. They may arise naturally in floodplains as part of a river system, or they may be somewhat isolated depressions (examples include vernal pools and prairie potholes). Usually they contain shallow water with marsh and aquatic plants and animals. A few animals also make their home in ponds, including both alligators and beavers. The type of life in a pond is generally determined by a combination of factors including water level regime (particularly depth and duration of flooding) and nutrient levels, but other factors may also be important, including presence or absence of shading by trees, presence or absence of streams, effects of grazing animals, and salinity.
Ponds are frequently human-constructed. In country side farmers and villagers dig a pond in their backyard or increase the depth of an existing pond by removing layers of mud during summer season. A wide variety of artificial bodies of water are classified as ponds. Some ponds are created specifically for habitat restoration, including water treatment. Others, like water gardens, water features and koi ponds are designed for aesthetic ornamentation as landscape or architectural features. Fish ponds are designed for commercial fish breeding, and solar ponds designed to store thermal energy.

Refilling our Bass Pond Expansion - Stocking the pond with Creek Chub
One week after filling the new expansion to our bass pond, we returned to find that it did not hold water to the level of the original pond - it had lost at least 1.5 feet in depth. It took the entire weekend pumping water from a nearby stream using two pumps to restore the depth achieved the week before. I was expecting a certain amount of water loss, but not this much. Hopefully, the disappearing water is due to loose, uncompressed soil and clay that makes up the berm. Only time will tell. If the new pond cannot match and maintain the same water level as the original pond, then I will not join the two ponds. Meanwhile, to test the quality of the water, and to satisfy our impatience, we captured at least a dozen small and medium-sized Creek Chub using a fish trap in the nearby stream, and...

Building a 4.5 acre farm pond. FarmCraft101
We built a pond on our farm a few years ago. It was a great addition! The pond is 4.5 acres and has a creek flowing into it. That means it is large enough that is doesn't get gross, and we fish and swim in it. It cost a fair amount, but it also doubles as water storage so I can irrigate my fields in summer droughts. For those interested, we paid $25k, which includes clearing of the site, burning brush, building the dam, including pipe cost and installation. That's a lot of money, but I figure I would rather drive my dodge pickup and own a pond, rather than driving a lexus. ;-) The pipe is schedule 40 PVC, 12" horizontal, 18" riser. Why is the riser bigger? A vertical pipe in this configuration won't fill completely or flow efficiently. Basically, the 12" pipe carries just as muc...

Our original source for the fiddle tune "Pond Creek Bottom." It's Otis Reynolds as I recorded him at THE local filling station in Geff, Illinois in December of 1977. The filling station was a popular oldtimer hangout, replete with the air hose bell that signaled a new customer pulling in. That's the faint "ding" you can hear at 0:57 into the tune. Otis tuned his fiddle several pitches below standard, which for this tune only added to the spookieness that attended the reputation of Pond Creek Bottom, which was local to the Geff and Fairfield, IL area. Legends about Pond Creek Bottom were numerous and dark. Back in Prohibition days, people had up and "disappeared" down in them bottoms. Thank you, Mr. Otis Reynolds (1899-1992).

Admittedly, we feel a little guilty transporting healthy stream fish to a new, untested stagnate environment and with no food source. So, to appease my guilt, I ordered a new Fish Mate automatic fish feeder thinking that at least the Creek Chubs will have something to munch on next week - providing they have survived their new environment, and the predators who are anxiously awaiting an easy meal!
