Bolivia (i/bəˈlɪviə/; Spanish: [boˈliβja]; Quechua: Buliwya [bʊlɪwja]; Aymara: Wuliwya [wʊlɪwja]; Guarani: Volívia [ʋoˈliʋja]), officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia (Spanish: Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia), is a landlocked country located in western-central South America. It is bordered to the north and east by Brazil, to the southeast by Paraguay, to the south by Argentina, to the southwest by Chile, and to the northwest by Peru. One-third of the country is the Andean mountain range, with its largest city and principal economic centers located in the Altiplano.
Before Spanish colonization, the Andean region of Bolivia was part of the Inca Empire, while the northern and eastern lowlands were inhabited by independent tribes. Spanish conquistadors arriving from Cuzco and Asunción took control of the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, Bolivia was known as Upper Peru and administered by the Royal Court of Charcas. Spain built its empire in great part upon the silver that was extracted from Bolivia's mines.

This clip explores the relationship between the global free-trade economy and migration. It features the impact of free-trade policies on Jessy and Jaime's family business in Bolivia. As a result of economic collapse in Bolivia, due at least in part to globalization and free-trade policies, Jessy and Jamie — professional technical engineers by training — are forced to come to the United States and work as janitors in order to support their family. Spanish/Nat Baby-smuggling rings operating in Bolivia are arranging the illegal adoption of hundreds of children to people abroad. The lucrative business is facilitated by the fact that many babies in Bolivia are not registered at birth. A lack of legal documentation means the official adoption process can be by-passed relatively easily. Bolivia's orphanages are testimony to its battered economy and over-burdened welfare system. According to a recent report by the social services, thousands of babies are abandoned every year by poverty-stricken parents struggling to live on meagre incomes. These abandoned babies are the lucky ones. Cared for by full-time nurses and health workers they have a future ahead of them. Others are not so lucky - the social services ar...
Bolivia is the second-poorest economy in South America and the 3rd poorest in Latin America in terms of GDP per capita. With 64 percent of the population living below the poverty line, (according to 2004 data from the CIA), unemployment stood at 8.5 percent in 2004 (the latest available figure), according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). This week our host Mauricio Izquierdo takes us to Peru, where Chinese culture thrives among indigenous customs. Chinese immigrants have been able to retain many of their ancient traditions while fully integrating themselves into Peruvian culture. Approximately five million people with Chinese last names now live in Peru. Then it’s off to the Andes where we hear the sounds of ancient sikuri music now being kept alive by a group of artists that practice indigenous ways of life. Although the Spanish conquerors tried to wipe out all traces of indigenous music, it is alive and well today. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/cultura-latina-463146/

Introduction & Background Pilcomayo, province of Salta, Argentina. In the central-western Chaco region of Argentina, which is home of this Chorote community, the indiscriminate felling of native forest, along with extensive cattle rearing, has caused desertification, soil impoverishment and a loss of biodiversity affecting their autonomous socio-economic system and, ever since, their food supply from hunting, fishing, gathering and small crop-growing. "Na Sam" is the Chorote word for "What belong to us". The name refers to the ancient voices of their ancestral culture, begging to be heard that would guide this indigenous community to rediscover their culture, looking after their traditions and their way of life. The Pilcomayo River, source of fresh water and fish for this riverine commu...

Casa Dorada literally means "Golden House". The Casa Dorada is one of two beautiful castle-like buildings in Tarija built by the same man: Moisés Navajas Ichazo, a very wealthy "chapaco" (Tarija) businessman who, not having any descendents of his own, decided these two imposing mansions would be what he'd be remembered for. The most famous is the Casa Dorada, now a cultural symbol of the valleys of Tarija, Bolivia. In 1887 the couple commissioned a pair of Swiss-Italian architects (Antonio and Miguel Camponovo) to build a house on a property they owned just one block from the central plaza in Tarija (Plaza Luis de Fuentes). The house was to be not only majestic, but also unique, giving them no reason to envy European mansions. In addition, it was to have features unlike the usual Bolivian...

Bolivia has declared Israel a “terrorist state” and revoked a visa exemption agreement with Tel Aviv in protest at the ongoing Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. The move "means, in other words, we are declaring (Israel) a terrorist state," President Evo Morales said during talks with a group of educators in the city of Cochabamba on Wednesday. Morales added that the Israeli offensive shows "that Israel is not a guarantor of the principles of respect for life and the elementary precepts of rights that govern the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of our international community." Signed in 1972, the visa exemption agreement has allowed Israelis to travel freely to Bolivia without a visa. The Syrian war was an artificial, deliberately planned and meticulously staged conflict from the very beginning, Carla Ortiz, a Bolivian documentary filmmaker told RT. She believes western MSM played a decisive role:repeating a stereotypical narrative while twisting the reality. Ortiz, the director of the “The Voice of Syria” documentary, recently returned from the war-torn country, where she visited regions which suffered most from the conflict. She talked to the Syrian people struggling to save their country while rebuilding their shattered lives. The real situation in Syria she witnessed is very different from the common narrative peddled by the western MSM. The entire idea of the Middle East being a “territory of a constant conflict” plagued by “dictators,” and Westerners being the “...

Most visitors stay near the Plaza San Francisco, because of its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum. Around La Paz, you can ride down “El Camino de la Muerte," hike through the lunar landscape of Valle de la Luna and great...
La Paz is known as the HIGHEST capital in the WORLD, at 12,000 ft above sea level. Here are a few things to do, eat, and see in La Paz, Bolivia to give you a taste of this South American city in the mountains! Quirks mentioned: → Mi Teleférico, the urban transit system of Bolivia. → Bolivian cuisine including api & pastel, pique macho, llama steak, and endless fruit juices! → Witches Market, otherwise known as Mercado de las Brujas. → Moon Valley, otherwise known as Valle de la Luna, is a bizarre lunar landscape created by the erosion of mountains by wind and rain. → Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers. → El Camino de la Muerte, or Death Road, is a dangerous 40-mile ride down dirty & gravel. S/O to my good friend Marcus for the Death Road GoPro sho...

We had privilege of visiting Lake Titicaca from both the Peru and Bolivia. The question we're often asked is which side is better? The easy answer is that it is really worth visiting both side of lago titicaca. The following is a travel guide for our extended stays on both sides of Lake Titicaca. On the Peruvian side we started our journey off in Puno where we boarded a boat heading out to Uros Island where we met people still living on the floating reed islands. We then went further onward for a home stay. On the Bolivian journey we visited Isla del Sol from Copacabana as a day trip hiking all over the island before heading back to Copacabana to visit markets. Day1: Uyuni to Colchani, Piles of Salt, Eyes of Water, Incahuasi island, Salt Hotel in San Juan Day2: Salar de Chiguana, Ollagüe Volcano, Lagoons and Flamingos, Colored lakes. Day3: Geysers, Thermal Water, Desert Salvador Dali, Green Lagoon, Villa Mar, Uyuni Tipp: Don't book at Camel Tours. We were not satisfied with our driver Roberto, since he pushes very aggressively to keep the schedule. You'll have more then enough time at the market to buy souvenirs but will be urged to hurry up at the sights like salt flat, salt hotel or Geysirs. No sense of "customer is king" was visible :-( Tour Guide Recommendation: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/1741799376/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp;=1638&creative;=6742&creativeASIN;=1741799376&linkCode;=as2&tag;=youtubchanned-21 Peer Kusiv music: http://www.ama...

License Video: http://dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true I didn't get to spend much time in Bolivia (2 weeks only which in comparison to other countries I've done in South America was not much) and I only get to see 3 parts of the country. That said, I did enjoy Bolivia, Potosi and one place the made it all worthwhile to come all the way to this part of the world.. Salar de Uyuni! This salt flat is as alien as it gets. From the infinite sight of the salt flat itself to the colorful lakes and life within the salt flat, Salar de Uyuni is really worth the hype. When we presented the stunning short-film ‘Experience Imagination: In South America’ earlier this year, the response we received was overwhelming – they wanted more, and so did we. Fortunately for all of us, the talented filmmakers who brought us part one -- the first dose of their incredible experience on a 4-month journey through South America -- didn't make us wait too long for the second video. The new short-film, ‘In South America: Untamed Winds’ follows lifelong friends, and filmmakers, Vincent Urban, Clemens Krüger, and Stefan Templer on a four-month road trip through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, and southern Brazil. Along the way, they witnessed the continent's natural beauty and were confronted with difficult weather conditions. “I hope a viewer is able to feel the time passing,...

With a Lonely Planet travel guide under his arm and a rucksack on his back, the individualist traveller insists on distinguishing himself from the masses on their package-deal holidays. “Can´t do it in Europe” reports on this sub-branch of tourist species, which can now be found in increasing numbers in the most remote corners of the world. Destination: Potosí, Bolivia, where real miners in original 19th-century working gear toil in the silver mines – under 19th-century conditions happens to be the main tourist attration. But what are the intentions of the tourists? Is it about getting to know a foreign culture or about escaping boredom at home by seeking distraction in the third world? What are the consecquenses of this kind of tourism, and how do the miners feel about being watched? This...

During the 1st summer of medical school my friend/roommate/classmate, Andrew, and I set out on a 3 week backpacking trip through South America. Simply put, it was the trip of a lifetime. While traveling, I resolved to make a video about our travels... it just took me 3 years. Trip course: Vegas then Medical mission work in Lima, then headed to Cusco, Machu Picchu, Mount Salkantay (20, 574 ft!), La Paz, and the Bolivian Salt flats among other things. Oh, and we set foot in Chile! Trip Highlights: Two near death experiences/rescues (one 50+ ft fall and one case of high altitude pulmonary edema), our bus left us on the Bolivian/Peruvian border due to a hang up with border patrol and we lost everything (luckily our English buddy, Sam, saved us!), pink flamingos (the real kind), volcanoes, ge...

Bolivias burning down tonight
Down by the cove its the way you called them over the cliff
Step from the fort we'll be there
Down by the tollway you tried to call me away when I've seen what it means to them
You can say you warned them to stay down tonight
But I can't wait
Are you down for the ride or will you crawl back before they die
Sympathy is tied to the ground
Cause sympathy now is not what they need
Whether rise or fall
Remain
