Germany (/ˈdʒɜːrməni/; German: Deutschland [ˈdɔʏtʃlant]), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, listen ), is a federal parliamentary republic in West-Central Europe. It includes 16 constituent states and covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi) with a largely temperate seasonal climate. Its capital and largest city is Berlin. With about 81.5 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state in the European Union. After the United States, it is the second most popular migration destination in the world.
Various Germanic tribes have occupied northern Germany since classical antiquity. A region named Germania was documented before 100 AD. During the Migration Period the Germanic tribes expanded southward. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th century, northern German regions became the centre of the Protestant Reformation.

As German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel prepares to hold talks with his Russian counterpart in Moscow, DW took to the streets to find out how ordinary Russians view the bilateral relationship.
A welfare report says nearly 16 percent of the German population is at risk of poverty. A single parent with one child earning less than 1,225 euros per month is considered poor. DW met up with a family in Berlin struggling to make ends meet.
Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, says she's "appalled, shocked and deeply saddened" by last night's attack on a Christmas market in Berlin. Twelve people died, and 48 were injured, when a lorry drove into a crowd in the centre of Germany's capital. Germany's Interior Ministry says there is no doubt it was a terrorist attack. But the Berlin police have said they can't be sure that the man they arrested last night was the attacker. Jürg Lehni & Alex Rich The Speed-i-Jet, a mobile pen-printer manufactured by Reiner (Germany), is a device built around an industrial inkjet cartridge / printing head. With its clumsy user interface and 30 character maximum capacity, this charming parasitical product prompted the discussion of possible uses for such a device. Together with the curatorial staff of the institution, daily news headlines were selected and transferred onto the devices. Holding and moving the device like a pen, visitors could experience the writing of texts to which the author is ambiguous. The headlines were collected during Things to Say at Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland, 2009.

#JoinGermanTradition Germany is world famous for its beer, which is brewed in over 5,000 different styles in 1,300 breweries up and down the country. The ‘German purity law’, or Reinheitsgebot, established in 1516, allows only four ingredients – water, barley, hops and yeast – and is the oldest such regulation that is still in force. But did you know that besides beer, Germany offers a wide variety of traditional regional beverages? In the heart of Germany, the Hessians love their ebbelwoi, a kind of cider served in earthenware jugs called bembels, and which is great in summertime by the way. Perfect for winter, however, is Helgoländer Eiergrog, a mixture of egg yolk, sugar, brandy, rum and water – and which can be too much for even the toughest sailor. To get back up on your feet, ma...

The last international health care system we covered – Singapore – got a great response from all of you. This week. We head back to Europe. Specifically, we're going to Germany. Their universal health care system is based on the principles of Bismark, which say that the state should provide only for those unable to provide for themselves. With Congress back in session, debate over reforming the American health care system is once again in full swing. Supporters of universal health care want the U.S. system to be more like those in Europe, with the government taking an active role to guarantee coverage for everyone. Those who oppose drastic changes in the U.S. system say greater government involvement and universal coverage guarantees will push the U.S. toward socialism. Germans have the oldest universal health care system in Europe - its origins go back more than a century - and they are generally pleased with the care they receive. Is there a lesson there for America? VOA's Sonja Pace reports from the German capital, Berlin.
Sen. Bernie Sanders holds a Senate hearing on health care systems around the world.

Health Care in Germany from "International Health Care Systems". Founded in 1883 by Otto von Bismarck, Germany's Statutory Health Insurance (SHI) program today insures about 90% of the country's population. The program is predominantly employment-based, with contributions from employees and employers calculated as a percentage of wages; nonworking spouses and children are covered free of charge. Coverage is offered through independent “sickness funds” (health plans), which all offer mandatory comprehensive benefits but may compete with one another by offering optional ones. In this decentralized system, federal, state, and local governments make policy, which is implemented by associations of sickness funds and health care providers. --- Important --- This video is not supposed to be a toplist - there is no correct order of the stackers. This is a video I liked when I first got included into tobiassteglichs Video. I wanted to do one aswell here is the result. The only part I am not happy about is the picture thing in the beginning. The pictures look pretty bad in my opinion(qualitywise). There are some german stackers I missed - for a simple reason. I wanted to take stackers who are 100% stacking currently and going to tournaments. I took their best times with a good quality and here we go! This is enough for a description and that´s all I had to say. Hope you enjoy the video :) Song: Unison - Aperture

Welcome to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. The first documentation of Berlin appears in the 13th century, and it has a long history of importance—it’s been the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia, among others. The lengthy history encompassing the city often manifests in its eclectic collection of architecture, which you should certainly include on your Berlin tour. From the towering classical lines of Charlottenburg Palace, built for the Hohenzollern family in the 17th century, to the sleek mirrored sides of the Bahn Tower, you’re bound to find plenty to look at in the city’s downtown area. Fancy a real German lager? Stop by Prater Garten for a brew—built in 1837, it’s one of the handful of buildings that has survived both World Wars. You can sit ou...

Travel video about destination Berlin in Germany. Berlin is Germany's modern capital city, a fascinating European metropolis with a dramatic history in which contemporary architecture merges with the imposing character of a centuries-old city. The Nokolai Quarter was built by the DDR government as a sort of old town, a European Disneyland for the city's 750th anniversary, a popular area with 'new' medieval buildings that display various guilds and stone statues that surround the city's oldest church. We travel to nearby Potsdam, a city of castles and gardens and with an old town that features a lively market atmosphere. When the monarchy settled there, so did their armies and with them came craftsmen, merchants and artists from many countries. The castle-like Nauener Tor leads to the Rus...

Last month, I went to Germany alone. I entered the country as lonely as a solo traveler could be. I ate alone, drank alone, and walked alone. But along the way, I met people, made new friends and rekindled old ones. By the time I left the country, I was no longer alone. I had the opportunity to be hosted by several German friends around the country, I partied with them, drink with them, and hung out with them. I experienced the alternative culture in Berlin. I lost my bag in Cologne (http://blog.bucketlistly.com/post/132467427542/bag-stolen-germany-cologne). I celebrated my Birthday with a Pool match and a rap battle concert in Dresden. It was a hell of a ride. As the saying goes, "Happiness is only real when shared". We, humans are social animals. No matter how independent we are, at ...

Berlin, the capital of Germany, lies on the banks of the River Spree. The city has an eclectic mix of architectural styles; everything from the modern dome of the Reichstag to that of the old Berlin Cathedral. The Chapel of Reconciliation is the spiritual heart of the Berlin Wall Memorial. The DDR Museum shows what life was like in East Germany during Socialist rule. Checkpoint Charlie was the Cold War's most famous border crossing; today the adjacent museum describes the clever ways in which Berliners defected from East to West. Berlin's East Side Gallery is one of the largest outdoor art exhibits in the world. The Holocaust Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of World War II. Rolling out before the Brandenburg Gate are the lawns and canals of the Tiergarten. Highlight here inclu...

Get more information about the project here: notjustanotherguide.de When you come study abroad and will live in another city it is always an exciting challenge. It’s a new culture, you get a lot of input and try to soak as much in of everything around you as possible to take these experiences home with you. As students of the Köln International School of Design (Cologne, Germany) we recognized that many incoming students enjoy studying here, but often it takes a while to find the exciting things the city has to offer. By the end of the semester, when they leave again, they often just settled in and found their favorite spots. We wanted to change thi...

Azerbaijan 1-4 Germany: Schurrle inspires world champions to fifth win in five. Andre Schurrle scored two and set up another against Azerbaijan as Germany made it five wins from five in World Cup qualifying Group C. Germany survived a scare to record a 4-1 victory over Azerbaijan that keeps them top of World Cup qualifying Group C with a 100 per cent record. Andre Schurrle, making his first start for Germany since October 2015, opened the scoring and set up Thomas Muller to make it 2-1 after Dimitrij Nazarov had threatened to spark a huge shock, before Mario Gomez struck just before half-time and Schurrle added a late fourth. Germany, who made seven changes to the team that beat England 1-0 in Wednesday's friendly, took the lead thanks to Schurrle after 19 minutes of the match in Baku ...

Well I thought...
That I meant something to you
But now I see that it's untrue
I guess you must have slept
With every guy you ever met
But I'm gonna get you back
If its the last thing I ever do
The stains on your mattress cannot hide
The fruits of your labor stuffed inside
But, while your in la-la land
Whispering the name of another man
I'm gonna turn my back
And leave your cheating ass behind
I'm gonna run away with your money
And buy a ticket to Germany
I'm gonna sleep with every single slut on the River Bohn
And I'll be surfing down the River Rhine (Whoo--oo--ooo)
And you'll be standing in the Welfare line
You're money and you're honey
Are long gone!
It's nothing personal
You saw to that
You're just a person
Who does her best work on her back
But if you're 'wakend
By an obscene call
I sprayed your number on the Berlin wall
I've seen the soldiers as they pass it all around
Imagine all the dick that you once missed
Because you couldn't find the Communists
East or West
Your still the best deal in town
I'm gonna run away with your money
And buy a ticket to Germany
I'm gonna sleep with every single slut on the River Bohn
And I'll be surfing down the River Rhine (Whoo--oo--ooo)
And you'll be standing in the Welfare line
You're money and you're honey
Are long gone!
