Television goes to the Bronx again, tonight at 8, in a CBS Reports documentary entitled “The Fire Next Door.” As Bill Moyers, the reporter/editor for this harrowing trip, says: The South Bronx “has all the superlatives: highest crime, poorest people, greatest unemployment, worst blight, and the world's record for arson.” The borough's population of 1.5 million is equal to that of Houston or Washington or San Diego. And in the last 10 years, more than 30,000 buildings have been set on fire and abandoned.
Straining a bit for broader national significance, Mr. Moyers and Tom Spain, the producer and director, stress that arson is the country's fastest growing crime and “that the forces at work here are no longer unique to the Bronx —the fire here is the fire next door.” But their essay is less about fires than people, the permanent underclass drifting through poverty and violence, and all the others—the victimized elderly, the working families living in terror, the very few industrious and optimistic.

The story has been told before, most notably and brilliantly on a public‐TV documentary called “The Police Tapes,” which captured a remarkably accurate portrait of the borough through the eyes of policemen in a single precinct. This CBS documentary covers much of the same material, including the bitter and unorthodox views of Anthony Bouza, who had been Bronx Borough Police Commander until his tough talk cost him his job.
Mr. Bouza ticks off his key points almost by rote: “We [the police] are a very efficient army of occupation.. We are “creating a permanent underclass of unemployed and desperate people. . . You don't see them because they drop out—they stop looking for jobs, they drop out of everything but the welfare rolls. . . And if these people weren't permanently pacified on alcohol, they'd be a lot more visible. If it weren't for the ready availability of alcohol, we'd all be in trouble.”
In a more personal approach than is normally found in network documentaries, Mr. Moyers is on the Bronx scene talking with firemen, conducting street interviews and, at one point, even getting involved in the prevention of a possible crime. There is the elderly black woman who has had two of her dogs thrown from a rooftop by neighborhood youngsters; the young Puerto Rican woman who is fiercely trying to protect her neat apartment and its contents; the young mother who condemns the filthy habits of her neighbors.
By far the most extraordinary sequence involves a Mrs. Sullivan, now in retirement after working 46 years as a supervisor at the Plaza Hotel. After 38 years in the same apartment, she is being forced to move because of thefts and muggings by vicious youths. In her Irish brogue, she tells Mr. Moyers about the gold retirement watch and $100 in cash for moving she is carrying in her pocket. While they are talking outside the building, several youths take advantage of the situation and break into her apartment. Mr. Moyers arranges to get her some protection and a speedy departure from the building.
Solutions, of course, remain elusive. One difficulty is that the problem itself tends to be defined too superficially. Surveying decimated neighborhoods, the program observes that “These were the homes of New York's working people—the Germans, Irish, Jews and Italians who paused here on their way to the suburbs and to the American promise fulfilled. Then came the poverty migration of blacks and Puerto Ricans.”

But as a native of the Bronx, I must take exception to this view. There were always many neighborhoods living at poverty levels, but destruction and violence were not tolerated. And many of the immigrants did more than pause, as Mrs. Sullivan's 38 years in the same building would indicate. The fact is that they were forced to leave the new phenomenon of urban terror escalated. Values have crumbled, social contracts have disintegrated. And the root cause has yet to be isolated.
“The Fire Next Door” ends on an upbeat tale of young and admirable Puerto Ricans trying to salvage an abandoned building. But their worthy cause is so isolated in the surrounding despair that the note of optimism is woefully overwhelmed.

This is the Bronx, in New York. One and a half million people live in this borough — equal to the population of Houston or Washington or San Diego. It’s the home of the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the Grand Concourse. It has also become the arson capital of the world.
Once, that smoke on the horizon signified industry, progress, jobs. Now it means someone is burning down a building: a landlord, for profit; a tenant, for revenge; junkies; vandals. It happens thirty times a day and the flames are the signal of a national disaster.
In the next hour, we’ll see what fire is doing to the Bronx and its people. It’s a report from one place in one city, but the forces at work here are no longer unique to the Bronx. The fire here is the fire next door.

Jim Jeffries has sung and played the guitar for as long as he remembers - Born in 1971 on the South coast of England, Jim grew up listening to his dad Tony Jeffries playing and singing folk and blues by guys like Leadbelly, and also country songs by Johnny Cash as well as Elvis' rockin' ballads; and he recalls singing along with his dad as a child, especially after August 16th 1977 when Elvis died and his dad played Elvis songs non stop for weeks!. But at this same time he noticed the harder rockabilly and rock n roll records in the loft of the house, and then heard punk rock on the radio. He had been playing around on his dad's old Gibson acoustic guitar, but at aged 10 in '81 he saved up £29 and bought his first electric guitar. At age 11 he wrote his first song, and started his first band in 1985.
Jim had or played in a number of bands during the 80's and 90's, and by 1996 had secured a record deal for 3 albums on the Crazy Love label with his band Rancho Deluxe - an outfit whose music was decribed as having a "lonesome cowboy feel, mixed with dark boppers!" and he did his first tour of Germany and Austria in 1997. Jim says that he fell in love with Germany and it's people immediately, due to the Germans' respect for great music, and their love of fun.
In the later 90's and early to mid 2000's Jim carried on Rancho Deluxe as well as starting a punk band - XX Cortez, and also enjoying playing guitar for a rockabilly band - Mark Lee Allen & The Driver Brothers, as well as playing with bigger bands like The Caravans, Dead Kings, Levi Dexter etc. Jim also went on to create a new band around the ex Krewmen singer Mad Dog Cole, and wrote the music for the MDC comeback album. He even spent time helping Viktoria Modesta launch her career, contributing towards the album and playing live; and through all of this Jim has therefore travelled extensively around Germany, the rest of Europe and Skandinavia, as well as enjoying a few trips to LA and Russia.
In 2005 after a few lineup changes, Jim decided to concentrate on two main projects - The Dark Angels - later to become the Wretched Souls, with the legendary Smutty Smiff on bass, playing dark country, and boppin' folk and blues, and also the Whip Crackin' Daddies, featuring his good friend Choppy of Demented Are Go, Nigel Lewis, and Guana Batz fame and Lee Barnett of Caravans, Pharaohs etc. Whip Crackin' Daddies was very well received across the rockin' and psycho scenes and beyond, famed for their hard drivin' kick ass sound, dark and mean vocals, and murderous lyrics. But Jim decided it would make more sense to have a band based in Germany, and in 2009 he created Killer Trio.
Jim also recently made his debut for Streetclip TV as an interviewer of rockin' and psycho bands - due to his vast knowledge of music and many acquaintances, he very much enjoys chatting on camera, sharing stories with old mates and finding out more about young fresh bands coming up on the scenes. Now in 2010, Jim is concentrating on his work with Frank Dickau of I Sold My Soul Media as purely "Jim Jeffries".
Jim is recording his debut album for his new label, and describes the style as "cool neo rockabilly, dark ballads, and rockin' blues"... he lists his current influences as Johnny Cash, Hot Boogie Chillun, Depeche Mode, Chris Isaak, and er... Elvis of course...

Fire! is a 1977 action TV movie, made for NBC television and Warner Bros. Television, directed by Earl Bellamy, who directed other disaster film one year before, Flood!. The film's plot is about a convict who escapes from an Oregon road gang and starts a fire in a forest, which goes out of control and threatens to destroy a small mountain community.

But at this same time he noticed the harder rockabilly and rock n roll records in the loft of the house, and then heard punk rock on the radio. He had been playing around on his dad's old Gibson acoustic guitar, but at aged 10 in '81 he saved up £29 and bought his first electric guitar. At age 11 he wrote his first song, and started his first band in 1985. Jim had or played in a number of bands during the 80's and 90's, and by 1996 had secured a record deal for 3 albums on the Crazy Love label with his band Rancho Deluxe - an outfit whose music was decribed as having a "lonesome cowboy feel, mixed with dark boppers!" and he did his first tour of Germany and Austria in 1997. Jim says that he fell in love with Germany and it's people immediately, due to the Germans' respect for great music, and their love of fun. In the later 90's and early to mid 2000's Jim carried on Rancho Deluxe as well as starting a punk band - XX Cortez, and also enjoying playing guitar for a rockabilly band - Mark Lee Allen & The Driver Brothers, as well as playing with bigger bands like The Caravans, Dead Kings, Levi Dexter etc. Jim also went on to create a new band around the ex Krewmen singer Mad Dog Cole, and wrote the music for the MDC comeback album. He even spent time helping Viktoria Modesta launch her career, contributing towards the album and playing live; and through all of this Jim has therefore travelled extensively around Germany, the rest of Europe and Skandinavia, as well as enjoying a few trips to LA and Russia. In 2005 after a few lineup changes, Jim decided to concentrate on two main projects - The Dark Angels - later to become the Wretched Souls, with the legendary Smutty Smiff on bass, playing dark country, and boppin' folk and blues, and also the Whip Crackin' Daddies, featuring his good friend Choppy of Demented Are Go, Nigel Lewis, and Guana Batz fame and Lee Barnett of Caravans, Pharaohs etc. Whip Crackin' Daddies was very well received across the rockin' and psycho scenes and beyond, famed for their hard drivin' kick ass sound, dark and mean vocals, and murderous lyrics. But Jim decided it would make more sense to have a band based in Germany, and in 2009 he created Killer Trio. Jim also recently made his debut for Streetclip TV as an interviewer of rockin' and psycho bands - due to his vast knowledge of music and many acquaintances, he very much enjoys chatting on camera, sharing stories with old mates and finding out more about young fresh bands coming up on the scenes. Now in 2010, Jim is concentrating on his work with Frank Dickau of I Sold My Soul Media as purely "Jim Jeffries". Jim is recording his debut album for his new label, and describes the style as "cool neo rockabilly, dark ballads, and rockin' blues"... he lists his current influences as Johnny Cash, Hot Boogie Chillun, Depeche Mode, Chris Isaak, and er... NOVINASTUDIO / http://www.novinastudio.pl Scenario, design, animation, sound: Grzegorz Nowiński The Royal Castle in Warsaw, being a symbol of the sovereignty of the Polish State, became a target for German military attacks as early as in the first days of the World War II. On 17 September 1939 it was in flames. Apart from the firemen and city wardens, also soldiers, harcerze (scouts) and civilians were helping to put the fire out. At the same time Polish museum workers and conservators, risking their own lives, were trying to salvage the most precious art collections, as well as decorative elements from the most important Castle rooms (eg. fragments of flooring, fireplaces, stucco works and frescos). The act of destruction was completed during the Warsaw Uprising in September 1944, when German sappers blasted the Castle walls. Decision to begin the reconstruction was however not made until January 1971. In 1977 first interiors were ready. The next ones were delivered in July 1984. The rebuilding of the Castle was accompanied by an immense involvement of the Polish nation. The whole investment was financed almost in full with the money coming from donations of Poles at home and abroad. Handing the reconstructed Castle to the nation was an act of honouring all of those, who, during the Occupation, with greatest dedication and risking their own lives, salvaged the Castle and the Castle art works for the future generations. Created for Press Play/IndieWire's "Genius Directors in Three Minutes" series: It is a well known fact that Quentin Tarantino is a self-proclaimed cinephile. But the writer/director's love for cinema is most obviously expressed through his own films. In addition to showing his characters spending a great deal of time discussing cinema, Tarantino's films are jam-packed with homages and visual references to the movies that have intrigued him throughout his life. Many filmmakers pay homage, but Tarantino takes things a step further by replicating exact moments from a variety of genres and smashing them together to create his own distinct vision. Just like 'Kill Bill: Vol 2' (2004) draws on 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' (1966) and 'Samurai Fiction' (1998), Tarantino's work often reflects Spaghetti Westerns and Japanese cinema--both new and old. His unique way of referencing other films allows him to bend genre boundaries and shatter the mold of what we expect to experience. While his methods are often criticized and he is accused of "ripping off" other filmmakers, it seems that Tarantino is simply writing love letters to the art he is ever so passionate about. This is the Bronx, in New York. One and a half million people live in this borough — equal to the population of Houston or Washington or San Diego. It’s the home of the New York Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the Grand Concourse. It has also become the arson capital of the world. Once, that smoke on the horizon signified industry, progress, jobs. Now it means someone is burning down a building: a landlord, for profit; a tenant, for revenge; junkies; vandals. It happens thirty times a day and the flames are the signal of a national disaster. Straining a bit for broader national significance, Mr. Moyers and Tom Spain, the producer and director, stress that arson is the country's fastest growing crime and “that the forces at work here are no longer unique to the Bronx —the fire here is the fire next door.” But their essay is less about fires than people, the permanent underclass drifting through poverty and violence, and all the others—the victimized elderly, the working families living in terror, the very few industrious and optimistic.

The story has been told before, most notably and brilliantly on a public‐TV documentary called “The Police Tapes,” which captured a remarkably accurate portrait of the borough through the eyes of policemen in a single precinct. This CBS documentary covers much of the same material, including the bitter and unorthodox views of Anthony Bouza, who had been Bronx Borough Police Commander until his tough talk cost him his job.
Mr. Bouza ticks off his key points almost by rote: “We [the police] are a very efficient army of occupation.. We are “creating a permanent underclass of unemployed and desperate people. . . You don't see them because they drop out—they stop looking for jobs, they drop out of everything but the welfare rolls. . . And if these people weren't permanently pacified on alcohol, they'd be a lot more visible. If it weren't for the ready availability of alcohol, we'd all be in trouble.”
In a more personal approach than is normally found in network documentaries, Mr. Moyers is on the Bronx scene talking with firemen, conducting street interviews and, at one point, even getting involved in the prevention of a possible crime. There is the elderly black woman who has had two of her dogs thrown from a rooftop by neighborhood youngsters; the young Puerto Rican woman who is fiercely trying to protect her neat apartment and its contents; the young mother who condemns the filthy habits of her neighbors.
By far the most extraordinary sequence involves a Mrs. Sullivan, now in retirement after working 46 years as a supervisor at the Plaza Hotel. After 38 years in the same apartment, she is being forced to move because of thefts and muggings by vicious youths. In her Irish brogue, she tells Mr. Moyers about the gold retirement watch and $100 in cash for moving she is carrying in her pocket. While they are talking outside the building, several youths take advantage of the situation and break into her apartment. The fact is that they were forced to leave the new phenomenon of urban terror escalated. Values have crumbled, social contracts have disintegrated. And the root cause has yet to be isolated.
“The Fire Next Door” ends on an upbeat tale of young and admirable Puerto Ricans trying to salvage an abandoned building. But their worthy cause is so isolated in the surrounding despair that the note of optimism is woefully overwhelmed.

Television goes to the Bronx again, tonight at 8, in a CBS Reports documentary entitled “The Fire Next Door.” As Bill Moyers, the reporter/editor for this harrowing trip, says: The South Bronx “has all the superlatives: highest crime, poorest people, greatest unemployment, worst blight, and the world's record for arson.” The borough's population of 1.5 million is equal to that of Houston or Washington or San Diego. And in the last 10 years, more than 30,000 buildings have been set on fire and abandoned.
Straining a bit for broader national significance, Mr. Moyers and Tom Spain, the producer and director, stress that arson is the country's fastest growing crime and “that the forces at work here are no longer unique to the Bronx —the fire here is the fire next door.” But their essay is less about fires than people, the permanent underclass drifting through poverty and violence, and all the others—the victimized elderly, the working families living in terror, the very few industrious and optimistic.

The story has been told before, most notably and brilliantly on a public‐TV documentary called “The Police Tapes,” which captured a remarkably accurate portrait of the borough through the eyes of policemen in a single precinct. This CBS documentary covers much of the same material, including the bitter and unorthodox views of Anthony Bouza, who had been Bronx Borough Police Commander until his tough talk cost him his job.
Mr. Bouza ticks off his key points almost by rote: “We [the police] are a very efficient army of occupation.. We are “creating a permanent underclass of unemployed and desperate people. . . You don't see them because they drop out—they stop looking for jobs, they drop out of everything but the welfare rolls. . . And if these people weren't permanently pacified on alcohol, they'd be a lot more visible. If it weren't for the ready availability of alcohol, we'd all be in trouble.”
In a more personal approach than is normally found in network documentaries, Mr. Moyers is on the Bronx scene talking with firemen, conducting street interviews and, at one point, even getting involved in the prevention of a possible crime. There is the elderly black woman who has had two of her dogs thrown from a rooftop by neighborhood youngsters; the young Puerto Rican woman who is fiercely trying to protect her neat apartment and its contents; the young mother who condemns the filthy habits of her neighbors.
By far the most extraordinary sequence involves a Mrs. Sullivan, now in retirement after working 46 years as a supervisor at the Plaza Hotel. After 38 years in the same apartment, she is being forced to move because of thefts and muggings by vicious youths. In her Irish brogue, she tells Mr. Moyers about the gold retirement watch and $100 in cash for moving she is carrying in her pocket. While they are talking outside the building, several youths take advantage of the situation and break into her apartment. Jim Jeffries has sung and played the guitar for as long as he remembers - Born in 1971 on the South coast of England, Jim grew up listening to his dad Tony Jeffries playing and singing folk and blues by guys like Leadbelly, and also country songs by Johnny Cash as well as Elvis' rockin' ballads; and he recalls singing along with his dad as a child, especially after August 16th 1977 when Elvis died and his dad played Elvis songs non stop for weeks!. But at this same time he noticed the harder rockabilly and rock n roll records in the loft of the house, and then heard punk rock on the radio. He had been playing around on his dad's old Gibson acoustic guitar, but at aged 10 in '81 he saved up £29 and bought his first electric guitar. At age 11 he wrote his first song, and started his first band in 1985.
Jim had or played in a number of bands during the 80's and 90's, and by 1996 had secured a record deal for 3 albums on the Crazy Love label with his band Rancho Deluxe - an outfit whose music was decribed as having a "lonesome cowboy feel, mixed with dark boppers!" and he did his first tour of Germany and Austria in 1997. Jim says that he fell in love with Germany and it's people immediately, due to the Germans' respect for great music, and their love of fun.
In the later 90's and early to mid 2000's Jim carried on Rancho Deluxe as well as starting a punk band - XX Cortez, and also enjoying playing guitar for a rockabilly band - Mark Lee Allen & The Driver Brothers, as well as playing with bigger bands like The Caravans, Dead Kings, Levi Dexter etc. Jim also went on to create a new band around the ex Krewmen singer Mad Dog Cole, and wrote the music for the MDC comeback album. He even spent time helping Viktoria Modesta launch her career, contributing towards the album and playing live; and through all of this Jim has therefore travelled extensively around Germany, the rest of Europe and Skandinavia, as well as enjoying a few trips to LA and Russia.
In 2005 after a few lineup changes, Jim decided to concentrate on two main projects - The Dark Angels - later to become the Wretched Souls, with the legendary Smutty Smiff on bass, playing dark country, and boppin' folk and blues, and also the Whip Crackin' Daddies, featuring his good friend Choppy of Demented Are Go, Nigel Lewis, and Guana Batz fame and Lee Barnett of Caravans, Pharaohs etc. Whip Crackin' Daddies was very well received across the rockin' and psycho scenes and beyond, famed for their hard drivin' kick ass sound, dark and mean vocals, and murderous lyrics. But Jim decided it would make more sense to have a band based in Germany, and in 2009 he created Killer Trio.
Jim also recently made his debut for Streetclip TV as an interviewer of rockin' and psycho bands - due to his vast knowledge of music and many acquaintances, he very much enjoys chatting on camera, sharing stories with old mates and finding out more about young fresh bands coming up on the scenes. Now in 2010, Jim is concentrating on his work with Frank Dickau of I Sold My Soul Media as purely "Jim Jeffries".
Jim is recording his debut album for his new label, and describes the style as "cool neo rockabilly, dark ballads, and rockin' blues"... he lists his current influences as Johnny Cash, Hot Boogie Chillun, Depeche Mode, Chris Isaak, and er... Elvis of course...

He even spent time helping Viktoria Modesta launch her career, contributing towards the album and playing live; and through all of this Jim has therefore travelled extensively around Germany, the rest of Europe and Skandinavia, as well as enjoying a few trips to LA and Russia.
In 2005 after a few lineup changes, Jim decided to concentrate on two main projects - The Dark Angels - later to become the Wretched Souls, with the legendary Smutty Smiff on bass, playing dark country, and boppin' folk and blues, and also the Whip Crackin' Daddies, featuring his good friend Choppy of Demented Are Go, Nigel Lewis, and Guana Batz fame and Lee Barnett of Caravans, Pharaohs etc. Whip Crackin' Daddies was very well received across the rockin' and psycho scenes and beyond, famed for their hard drivin' kick ass sound, dark and mean vocals, and murderous lyrics. But Jim decided it would make more sense to have a band based in Germany, and in 2009 he created Killer Trio.
Jim also recently made his debut for Streetclip TV as an interviewer of rockin' and psycho bands - due to his vast knowledge of music and many acquaintances, he very much enjoys chatting on camera, sharing stories with old mates and finding out more about young fresh bands coming up on the scenes. Now in 2010, Jim is concentrating on his work with Frank Dickau of I Sold My Soul Media as purely "Jim Jeffries".
Jim is recording his debut album for his new label, and describes the style as "cool neo rockabilly, dark ballads, and rockin' blues"... he lists his current influences as Johnny Cash, Hot Boogie Chillun, Depeche Mode, Chris Isaak, and er... Elvis of course...

The Royal Castle in Warsaw, being a symbol of the sovereignty of the Polish State, became a target for German military attacks as early as in the first days of the World War II. On 17 September 1939 it was in flames. Apart from the firemen and city wardens, also soldiers, harcerze (scouts) and civilians were helping to put the fire out. At the same time Polish museum workers and conservators, risking their own lives, were trying to salvage the most precious art collections, as well as decorative elements from the most important Castle rooms (eg. fragments of flooring, fireplaces, stucco works and frescos). The act of destruction was completed during the Warsaw Uprising in September 1944, when German sappers blasted the Castle walls.
Decision to begin the reconstruction was however not made until January 1971. In 1977 first interiors were ready. The next ones were delivered in July 1984. The rebuilding of the Castle was accompanied by an immense involvement of the Polish nation. The whole investment was financed almost in full with the money coming from donations of Poles at home and abroad.
Handing the reconstructed Castle to the nation was an act of honouring all of those, who, during the Occupation, with greatest dedication and risking their own lives, salvaged the Castle and the Castle art works for the future generations.

It is a well known fact that Quentin Tarantino is a self-proclaimed cinephile. But the writer/director's love for cinema is most obviously expressed through his own films. In addition to showing his characters spending a great deal of time discussing cinema, Tarantino's films are jam-packed with homages and visual references to the movies that have intrigued him throughout his life.
Many filmmakers pay homage, but Tarantino takes things a step further by replicating exact moments from a variety of genres and smashing them together to create his own distinct vision. Just like 'Kill Bill: Vol 2' (2004) draws on 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' (1966) and 'Samurai Fiction' (1998), Tarantino's work often reflects Spaghetti Westerns and Japanese cinema--both new and old. His unique way of referencing other films allows him to bend genre boundaries and shatter the mold of what we expect to experience. While his methods are often criticized and he is accused of "ripping off" other filmmakers, it seems that Tarantino is simply writing love letters to the art he is ever so passionate about.
From German silent-cinema to American B movies, the following video uses split-screen to demonstrate a few of the hundreds of visual film references over the course of Tarantino's career.

Almost 40 years later, we’ve made great progress and large strides further into space, but in some ways have barely got our feet wet. Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

Kilauea - The Fire Within
Many in Hawaii refer to the lava as Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. After our incredible experiences at the volcano it’s not hard to see why so many islanders to this day see Pele as a living breathing thing. I was born and raised on the island but hadn’t had the chance to come face to face with Pele until we set out to create this film. I wanted to capture the beauty, mystery and danger of Kilauea. I wanted to just see the volcano doing what it does by turning the cameras away from human interaction and toward the fiery blood of the Earth. The Fire Within is our attempt at capturing what it felt like to witness molten rock slowly burning down a dense wet rainforest, or to peer into a 600 foot wide lava lake at Kilauea’s summit crater. - First footage from the new Phantom Flex4K - "Let me know when you see Fire"
Cinematographer Greg Wilson and Director Brendan Bellomo were asked by Vision Research and Abel CineTech to shoot the first test footage with the new Phantom Flex4K Digital Cinema Camera. The camera was a little more than a week old and still in its alpha prototype stage when we got our hands on it. All the live action footage was shot on March 24th, 2013. Some additional fire elements were shot on the 23rd and 25th of March with the Hebron and Glastonbury Fire Departments in Connecticut. We were thrilled with the camera's performance at this early stage of its development and are very much looking forward to this camera as it matures prior to it's release this fall. Many in Hawaii refer to the lava as Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. After our incredible experiences at the volcano it’s not hard to see why so many islanders to this day see Pele as a living breathing thing.
I was born and raised on the island but hadn’t had the chance to come face to face with Pele until we set out to create this film. I wanted to capture the beauty, mystery and danger of Kilauea. I wanted to just see the volcano doing what it does by turning the cameras away from human interaction and toward the fiery blood of the Earth.
The Fire Within is our attempt at capturing what it felt like to witness molten rock slowly burning down a dense wet rainforest, or to peer into a 600 foot wide lava lake at Kilauea’s summit crater. I’ve never been anywhere else on the planet that demanded as much respect and awareness for the natural environment around me. Peles mesmerizing beauty and unsettling sense of danger were nothing short of humbling and put so much into perspective. Kilauea really did change my life.
Huge thanks to those who supported this film along the way, especially Wes and Stefan for contributing so much time and talent to make this thing what it is. Kilauea – The Fire Within was produced out of pocket and with complete creative freedom.

Cinematographer Greg Wilson and Director Brendan Bellomo were asked by Vision Research and Abel CineTech to shoot the first test footage with the new Phantom Flex4K Digital Cinema Camera. The camera was a little more than a week old and still in its alpha prototype stage when we got our hands on it.
All the live action footage was shot on March 24th, 2013. Some additional fire elements were shot on the 23rd and 25th of March with the Hebron and Glastonbury Fire Departments in Connecticut. We were thrilled with the camera's performance at this early stage of its development and are very much looking forward to this camera as it matures prior to it's release this fall. This is a true 4K RAW camera capable of at 1000fps at 4K resolution. Thanks to our great crew, including lead Phantom camera technician Edward Richardson, VRI and Abel CineTech for giving us the opportunity to shoot with this amazing new camera system.
