Syria (i/ˈsɪ.rɪə/; Arabic: سوريا or سورية, Sūriyā or Sūrīyah), officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia. De jure Syrian territory borders Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest, but the government's control now extends to approximately 30–40% of the de jure state area and less than 60% of the population.
A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians,Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunnis, Christians, Alawites, Druze, Mandeans, Shiites, Salafis, and Yazidis. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham), while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.

At least 58 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town in north-western Syria, a monitoring group says. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that strikes on Khan Sheikhoun by Syrian government or Russian jets had caused many people to choke. Later, aircraft fired rockets at local clinics treating some of the survivors, medics and opposition activists said. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons. BREAKING NEWS & CURRENT EVENTS
The latest news about the Islamic State ISIS in Syria
The Russian military intervention in the Syrian Civil War began in September 2015 after an official request by the Syrian government for military help against rebel and jihadist groups.[85][86] The intervention initially consisted of air strikes fired by Russian aircraft stationed in the Khmeimim base at targets primarily in north-western Syria, against militant groups opposed to the Syrian government, including Syrian National Coalition, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda in the Levant) and the Army of Conquest.[87][88][89] Besides, Russian military advisors and special operations forces were stationed in Syria.[90] Prior to the intervention, Russian involvement in the Syrian Civil War had mainly consisted of supplying the Syrian Army.[91] Shortly a...

Istanbul, a city where you can have an European experience with Islamic grace. A place that embraces the East and the West in terms of culture, art and religion, at the borders of two separate continents. However, Turkey is much more than its clichéd image of a “bridge between East and West”. We have ridden from the far north west to the very south east and and have visited and slept in villages situated no more than 100k from the borders of Syria, Iran, Iraq and Armenia. Historical sites as old as 4000 years, located in breathtaking landscapes surrounded by small farm villages that are unique and a must see for any traveller. The friendliness of the Kurdish people makes the entire experience even better. The hospitality of the locals is overwhelming. We were lucky to have the oportunity...
Like so many, I struggle to reconcile the atrocities occurring daily in Syria - and many other communities around our globe - with the simplicity and grace of the life I live on the other side of the world. How do we make sense of our different realities - domesticity, safety and privilege on the one hand and a life of fear, loss and horror on the other? This film is my attempt to build a bridge between these two realities and in so doing to stand alongside those amongst our world's people whose lives are unsafe and touched by sorrow at this time. The text combines a poem originally written in response to the genocide in Kosovo and Rwanda with lines borrowed directly from current NYTimes articles covering the Syrian crisis. I am grateful to Moscow-based composer Darin Sysoev for making ...
Part 2: http://vimeo.com/debalie/statelessdemocracy2 (also on http://youtu.be/TldgkitcS-s ) The fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has often been portrayed as a fight between the West and its Arab allies against Islamic ultra-fundamentalists. Over the last several years, however, a progressive Kurdish-led resistance has been forming in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) amidst the Syrian Civil War. The resistance has successfully implemented new models of grassroots democracy, gender equality, and sustainable ecology, its members practicing a political project they refer to as Democratic Confederalism. Women and men stand side-by-side in its armed forces in the face of both ISIS and the Bashar al-Assad regime. Despite the resistance’s efforts, Rojava is currently threatened b...

This typographic sequence will focus on two sides of the story from the Vice series, 'Europe or Die' and the 'People's Voices' shorts. In all I'm aiming to develop a promo that utilises live action film with typography to get across the core message Vice News web series is trying to get across to it’s audiences. The idea of abstraction is something am eager to look into and a way of doing that is through ink as it holds many symbolic references and may be represented...

VTB Bank Chairman and President Andrey Kostin on the Russian economy, oil prices and Syria.
At the outset of the ongoing Syrian Civil War, Syria was classified by the World Bank as a "lower middle income country." In 2010, Syria remained dependent on the oil and agriculture sectors. The oil sector provided about 40% of export earnings. Proven offshore expeditions have indicated that large sums of oil exist on the Mediterranean Sea floor between Syria and Cyprus. The agriculture sector contributes to about 20% of GDP and 20% of employment. Oil reserves are expected to decrease in the coming years and Syria has already become a net oil importer. Since the civil war began, the economy shrank by 35%, and the Syrian pound has fallen to one-sixth of its prewar value. The government increasingly relies on credit from Iran, Russia and China. The economy is highly regulated by the govern...

Collusion between business communities and the state can lead to a measure of security for those in power, but this kind of interaction often limits new development. In Syria, state-business involvement through informal networks has contributed to an erratic economy. With unique access to private businessmen and select state officials during a critical period of transition, this book examines Syria’s political economy from 1970 to 2005 to explain the nation’s pattern of state intervention and prolonged economic stagnation. “Bassam Haddad has produced a path-breaking study of Syria’s political economy. With unequalled access to first hand sources, his work highlights the underlying political logics that have shaped Syria’s economy since the rise of the Baath Party to power half a century ag...
Liberals plan for huge influx of refugees, immigrant spouses at expense of skilled foreign workers The Liberal government has cut the number of skilled foreign workers it will allow into Canada this year to make room for a huge influx of Syrian refugees, immigrant spouses and children. Immigration Minister John McCallum says the reduction in economic immigrants is a “temporary pause” that will have minimal impact on Canada’s well-being and prosperity. But the move has nonetheless raised concerns from business groups about the Liberals’ long-term plans for immigration. At the same time, the government could face a backlash from some ethnic communities for not letting more immigrant parents and grandparents into Canada to be reunited with their families. McCallum announced the changes at...

The 1970s, pronounced "the Nineteen Seventies", was the decade that started on January 1, 1970, and ended on December 31, 1979. This was the eighth decade of the 20th century. In the Western world, social progressive values that began in the 1960s, such as increasing political awareness and political and economic liberty of women, continued to grow. The hippie culture, which started in the latter half of the 1960s, waned by the early 1970s and faded towards the middle part of the decade, which involved opposition to the Vietnam War, opposition to nuclear weapons, the advocacy of world peace, and hostility to the authority of government and big business. The environmentalist movement began to increase dramatically in this period. In the United Kingdom with the 1979 elections resulted in t...

I was only shot once today, by a 9 year old in the thigh while clowning in a football field. These children were mostly palestinian refugees who've been in Jordan for a while, some Syrian. While we boarded the bus to leave the stadium, a cheap yellow piece of plastic from a toy pistol bounced off my leg. Only because they didn't want us to go. I think. Or maybe they were just little boys raised in violence. It's a holiday. One where they kill a sheep and feed it to the poor. It's like Christmas they say. But instead of christmas tree stands in parking lots across the city, there are sheep slaughtering stations. And instead of shopping, giving. On the bus to the stadium our awesome med student guides taught us the silliest Arabic song about a man asking a woman to hide him in the food sto...
This is a slide show I put together from pictures I took from my iPhone while I was in Beirut. I went there to paint a cafe mural with two other American ladies. Each morning we made our way to a very large building site consisting of many shops in the making, lining the circumference of the harbor. The site was filled with construction workers from Syria and Iraq in and amongst the Lebanese architects and us from the US. The working conditions were pretty dusty and dirty, not to mention the 96 degree weather...with no AC! However the richness of my experience there in Lebanon far out did the gritty environment of our 9-5. I was so touched by the warmth and hospitality of the Lebanese people. We felt safe there too. I didn't hear one siren the entire time. I was there just over 3 wee...
February 04, 2015 NEW YORK— A few days after Syrian-American pianist and composer Malek Jandali performed his song, "Watani Ana" ("I Am My Homeland"), outside the White House, Syrian security forces burst into his parents’ home in Homs and beat them. “That was the first time ever realizing the ‘soft’ power of music,” Jandali said in New York, the week of his debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. He moved his parents to the U.S. soon after the incident in July 2011, but four years into the Syrian conflict, Jandali remains focused on using his music to raise awareness and, he hopes, help bring down the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “It is their music,” he said, referring to those resisting Assad. “I’m inspired by their courageous acts, by their memories, by their his...

After three years of war, the more than 4 million refugees who are displaced within Syria face a health care disaster. Save the Children estimates 60 percent of that country's hospitals have been damaged or destroyed and nearly half of its doctors have fled, among other dire statistics. Michael Klosson of Save the Children joins Jeffrey Brown to discuss the crisis.
The National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) was set up as a result of the disastrous but inevitable rise in mental health issues amongst Syrian children, due to the conflict. The center offers psycho social treatment to children and their parents. This video contains a special interview with the center's medical director Dr Wael Al-Raas as he explains the main problems children are facing inside Syria.

In September 2014, we traveled to Lebanon to capture what life is like for Syrian refugees living in the Bekaa Valley. We were hosted by the humanitarian organisation MEDAIR who has been helping newly arriving refugees primarily with establishing safe shelters since 2012. Check out to see what they are doing at: www.medair.org This film is a collections of sights and sounds from our experience in the informal settlements of the Bekaa Valley where more than 130.000 Syrian refugees are seeking safety. The government has been hesitant to allow formal refugee camps, so these families are living in makeshift shelters on rented farmland from Lebanese farmers with little to no amenities such as water and sanitation. "Syria: The Assads' Twilight" A film by Vincent de Cointet & Christophe Ayad / An Icarus Films Release icarusfilms.com/new2011/assad.html Bashar al-Assad tells a French TV audience about his calling as a doctor. "You work for the health of humans. It's a humanitarian job," Two years later, the world would watch as this humanitarian sent black-clad troops to open fire on unarmed protesters seeking the fall of his regime. During the 1970s, Bashar's father, Hafez al-Assad, turned Syria into one of the world's most secretive and repressive dictatorships. But Bashar was supposed to be different. A doctor who had lived in London, he vowed to fight corruption and embrace globalization in his inaugural address as president. He was supposed to be a modern, liberal leader. Just over a decade later,...

President Barack Obama said he had not yet made his decision regarding a U.S. strike on Syria during an interview with PBS NewsHour senior correspondents Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill. The president said that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons would factor into his calculation and he warned that the Assad regime should be held accountable. Mr. Obama spoke to the NewsHour on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech where he reflected on the challenges Americans still face today in the form of jobs, health care and education. In the interview, the president also vowed to take steps to ensure voting rights for all Americans.

By the evening of November 26 the forefront of the Syrian Army in the Hanano district separated only 1.5 kilometers to the government forces in Suleiman al-Halyabi. The collapse of the terrorist defense was provided by distracting attacks - from the south - on the Sheikh Said, in the city center - in Suleiman al-Halyabi, in the north-east - in the industrial zone Aueydzha. This allowed the tie up all the reserves of terrorists. At this time, in the strictest secret it was preparing a powerful blow to the Hanano district. The suddenness and power of artillery preparation before the offensive broke the will of the extremists to resist. According to radio intercepts, the enemy retreated in panic, not having prepared defense lines. http://www.anna-news.info/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC...

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of the unique and mysterious metropolis of Palmyra. The legendary ancient city was built in this vicinity due to the existence of an oasis, Tadmur, and today around thirty thousand people live in the surrounding area. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there and later a flourishing cultural and economic centre developed. Close to the former Agora, the central square in which the city’s inhabitants held their weekly market since the first century A.D., is one of Palmyra’s architectural landmarks, the Tetrapylon. SPECIAL SERIESSYRIA'S CIVIL WAR The Boy Who Started the Syrian War We tell the story of Mouawiya Syasneh, the boy whose anti-Assad graffiti lit the spark that engulfed Syria. 09 Feb 2017 10:22 GMT Syria's Civil War, War & Conflict Mouawiya Syasneh was just 14 when he sprayed anti-government slogans on his school wall in Deraa, Syria. It was February 2011, and he could never have imagined that such a minor act would spark a full-blown civil war. More than half a million people have been killed in Syria since the start of the war. Mouawiya's home city has been ravaged by street fighting, shelling and barrel bombing. The war has left scars that may never heal. Now a young man, fighting on the frontline for the Free Syrian Army, Mouawiya admits that had he known what the consequences of his...

Following the recent events that took place in Syria, people all over the world used to see this country like it presented by media. I have been twice there and can assure you Syria is a wonderful land with its age-old traditions and unique culture. First, I came to Syria together with my friends in August 2010. That's exactly when I shot my first video about the place. Later Blake Whitman showed it on vimeo.com HD channel. The movie was warmly met and watched by a great number of people, what gave me an opportunity to take part in another project in Syria in February this year. It was a documentary about the country made in 20 days. I was DOP in a second unit. The video you see I made together with my friend from my Syrian shot here, at home. I wish people remembered Syria a great and ma...
For two weeks the installation was an initiative to promote Norway’s annual fundraising event “TV-aksjonen”. This year all donations went to the Red Cross, and people living in war and conflict. IKEA partnered with the Red Cross to promote the cause. 25 m2 of Syria is an apartment at IKEA Slependen (flagship store in Norway). But it is not one of the "picture perfect" homes that are usually on display. The apartment is built as a replica of the real home of Rana and her family of 9 in Damascus, Syria. It was important to get the public involved, and to really understand where the help was going. So the decision to build a replica of a Syrian home at IKEA was made. IKEA’s vision is ‘to create a better everyday life for the may people’. So this partnership was both natural, giving and...

After visiting Jordan last year I interviewed a Syrian Refugee who fled across the border from Syria with her two children. I asked her young children to draw pictures of their journey. This animation takes inspiration from the children's drawings and uses the voice-over of their mother Faiza to tell their story. It hopefully also highlights the shocking numbers of displaced children along with the large numbers of Syrian people who simply just ‘disappear’ under the Assad Regime. Documentary Syria 2016: The Truth of Syria
Picturesque and in distress in .
SYRIA!
It's scarier.
Strong and broken it's true.
SYRIA!
I'm serious.
I'm looking out for -
Ghostly horizons etched in -
SYRIA!
It's scarier.
The everlasting portion of the pie-stuck-in-the-sky-and out to dry...
And the wheel goes on .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
Far fetched and flung .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
I got my own morale-a-mill.
From Syria.
Hysteria.
Oh, you ate the seed before the meal!
Stare, Slam, how dare they
YOU ate the words write out of my mouth! (Huh)
SYRIA.
The ever lasting portion of the pie-stuck-in-the-sky-hung out to dry.
And the wheel goes on .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
Star-struck and slung .
With miles and miles from my gun.
Turn it up-up, turn it!
Turn it up-up, turn it up-up, turn it!
Bright-with-the-frighten-eyeline,
At Syria!
Hysteria!
Brown-with-a-doubt-in-his-mind .
Syria.
It's scarier
But what is he in for?
Ghostly horizons etched in,
Syria
It's Scarier!
The everlasting fortune that,
Syria .
It's scarier!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
Turn it
Up-up-up!
