Gerrish Township, Michigan

Gerrish Township is a civil township of Roscommon County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,072 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 37.2 square miles (96 km²), of which 27.6 square miles (71 km²) is land and 9.6 square miles (25 km²) (25.79%) is water.

History

The location started as the Gerrish Logging Camp. On April 5, 1880, at the camp, area residents met and elected officers for their newly formed township. The first Township Supervisor was James Watson. As originally platted, the township included present-day Gerrish, Lyon and Markey townships. In 1920 the boundary line was reestablished to its present lines. The second permanent town hall was built in 1970. The township borders on half of the Higgins Lake shoreline, Michigan's sixth largest inland lake. It is primarily a resort area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,072 people, 1,343 households, and 957 families residing in the township. The population density was 111.2 per square mile (42.9/km²). There were 3,366 housing units at an average density of 121.8 per square mile (47.0/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.24% White, 0.33% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.

Common Purpose has run a range of leadership development courses which it claims offer participants the inspiration, knowledge and connections to help them become more active and engaged in society. These courses ran in 11 countries worldwide as at 2010 and seek to build organizational capacity by increasing the number of individuals who are actively involved in shaping the future of the area in which they work and who subscribe to Common Purposes's values.

Brian

Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) is a male given name of Irish and Breton origin, as well as a surname of Occitan origin. It is common in the English-speaking world. It is possible that the name is derived from an Old Celtic word meaning "high" or "noble". For example, the element bre means "hill"; which could be transferred to mean "eminence" or "exalted one".
