2016 CCEPR Annual Report Released

Continuing dental education providers approved through the American Dental Association’s Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) offered a combined total of more than 28,000 CE activities, including over 245,000 hours of instruction in 2015.

The Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition’s 2016 Annual Report includes data on the size and scope of ADA CERP recognized providers’ CE programs, and a summary of the Commission’s activities in 2016. The report is published as a service to participating providers and continuing dental education stakeholders.

CERP Standard XIII. Patient Protection Revised

At its March 31-April 1, 2016 meeting, the Commission adopted revisions to CERP Standard XIII. Patient Protection (PDF). Revisions were considered and adopted based on the need for clarification of certain requirements for providers offering courses in which patients are treated. The revisions include the following:

  • Criteria XIII.8 and XIII.9 were combined into a single criterion defining the CE provider’s responsibilities for ensuring completion of any treatment performed on a patient in a CE activity and any necessary post-course treatment;
  • Criteria XIII.3 and XIII.10 (now XIII.9) were modified to clarify that providers offering courses in which patients are treated are responsible for meeting applicable local laws related to dental licensure and liability protection;
  • Criterion XIII.5 includes a new requirement related to patient informed consent.

Revisions to Standard XIII have been included in the April 2016 ADA CERP Recognition Standards (PDF). Providers that offer CE activities in which patients are treated, either by the instructor or course participants, should review the criteria and make any necessary changes to ensure program compliance.

Providers will be assessed for compliance with the revised patient protection criteria set forth in Standard XIII beginning with the Fall 2017 ADA CERP application (providers with a recognition term ending December 2017 and later).
