Native Americans lead fight against gas pipeline for environmental justice
The Standing Rock Sioux in the U.S. have been fighting against the construction of a major gas pipeline which would threaten their water supply and violate their sacred sites. They have organized popular direct action against the construction company and the state and inspired people throughout the country and the world.
For months, thousands of Native Americans and others have attempted to stop the construction of a monster gas pipeline. They have filed legal claims and lobbied politicians, but what has been especially impressive has been the attempted blockade of construction. Throughout the world, indigenous peoples have played an important role in fighting pipelines, oil drilling, fracking, and the overall destruction of the environment. Sometimes allied with local white farmers and workers, the indigenous have the advantage of legal rights which their white neighbors (and environmentalists) do not have. They also have special moral claims, based on centuries of oppression and treaty-breaking.
Politicians and the Unions
President Obama and his agencies have politely asked the company to postpone further work for now; the company has refused. Hillary Clinton has not taken a clear position and of course Donald Trump will not opposed the pipeline. Bernie Sanders has officially asked Ms. Clinton to oppose the project, to no avail. The presidential candidate of the Green Party, Dr. Jill Stein, went to the blockading camp and was fined for spray-painting a bulldozer. |

They were made to impose capitalism and cultural ideas that supported the project of the Capitalists. This article furthers the discussion of how the genocide and colonization of North America was part of the overall oppression and exploitation of the contemporary working class. This article is an anarchist response to the apologies of Settler governments in |Canada and Australia. Broken Barricades: The Oaxaca Rebellion in Victory, Defeat, and Beyond (2) Mar 30 3 comments It is written after the apogee of the Oaxaca rebellion, but with the certainty that this movement is not over, that in one form or another the struggle that began in 2006 will continue. Our analysis is presented in the hope that will shed some light on Oaxaca before the uprising is mythologized (by anti-authoritarians); distorted (by all the Leninist vanguards who, in their arrogance, are eager to impart their stern “lessons” to the “masses” in Oaxaca); or simply fades away, far from the glare of the proverbial media spotlight. An Anarchist Study of the Iroquois Jan 07 4 comments The traditional society of the Rotinonshón:ni (Iroquois), "The People of the Longhouse," was a densely settled, matrilineal, communal, and extensively horticultural society. The Rotinonshón:ni formed a confederacy of five nations. Generations before historical contact with Europeans, these nations united through the Kaianere'kó:wa into the same polity and ended blood feuding without economic exploitation, stratification, or the formation of a centralized state. First Nations in Canada - When Property Does Not Apply Dec 17 0 comments Normally the settlement of claims to property are something the court system takes very seriously. The very foundation of capitalism after all is that some person can claim ownership of a piece of land, and through that ownership charge others rent to use it explains Andrew Fleming. Jump To Comment: 1There has been a call from Honor the Earth, the Indigenous Environmental Network, 350.org, and others to show up at offices of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps, and the Obama administration, have the power to terminate the Dakota Access Pipeline. At the Army Corps office in lower Manhattan, we will stand in solidarity with Water Protectors in North Dakota. They are standing in the path of the Dakota Access Pipeline and have faced violent attacks by militarized police and Army National Guard units in recent days.
