ABC celebrates Northern Territory artists and next generation filmmakers in short doc project
ABC Arts and Screen Territory have teamed up to showcase some of Northern Territory’s most exciting artistic talents. Art X *North is part of ABC Arts’ ongoing talent development project that pairs artists with filmmaking teams to create innovative and evocative short films for a digital-first audience. The shorts premiere on ABC iview on May 29, 2015. The Art X *North initiative began with an open call which attracted applications from Northern Territory artists and filmmakers. ABC Arts and Screen Territory selected a short list of three exciting visual artists to take part in the project: Aly de Groot, Jacki Fleet and Nonggirrnga Marawili. These artists were paired with three filmmaking teams under the mentorship of Darwin-based documentary maker Danielle MacLean. The filmmaker teams selected are: Timothy Parish & Shannon Swan, Helen Browning & Sharon PangQee, and Ishmael Marika & Joseph Brady. As well as celebrating Northern Territory’s wealth of creative talent, the initiative provides a fast-paced platform for young filmmakers to tell local stories about local people in new and interesting ways. ABC TV Arts Commissioning Editor, Mandy Chang, explains that the project also reflects the ABC’s aim to bring the work of upcoming filmmakers to an expanding online audience through short-form video on ABC iview. “Collaborations like this initiative with Screen Territory are important to the ABC, not just because they play a role in nurturing new talent in the new media spaces that ABC Arts has embraced, but also because they represent the diversity of art within the regions in Australia. Short form video is a great proving ground for emerging filmmaking talent, whilst providing great arts content for our iview space. We are very proud of the final three films and of the filmmakers. Their work reveals a rich vein of arts practice currently happening across the Northern Territory.” Northern Territory Minister for Arts and Museums, Gary Higgins, congratulated the three selected filmmaker teams on their achievement. “It’s a wonderful project and I’m sure these filmmaker teams will have produced some great films with these artists,” Mr Higgins said. “Each production received $8000 from the Territory Government and we funded $12,000 towards the mentorship. “We’re proud to support local artists and local productions.”
Meredith Garlick, Acting Director of Screen Territory, says: “The films are artworks in their own right, with the filmmakers finding richly visual and creative ways of exploring each artist’s work. The films represent a valuable and important credit for these emerging filmmakers as they expand their careers to reach new audiences.”
