Authorities are looking at what action should be taken following the leaking of a confidential map showing the shake-up of election boundaries a day before its official release.

Queensland Redistribution Commission commissioner Walter van der Merwe said he was "really furious about it".

Queensland's new electoral boundaries

The seats of Indooroopilly and Dalrymple are abolished as Queensland is remapped to make way for four new seats. Nine News

"We'll see what we can do about it," Mr van der Merwe said.

"It's unprecedented where documents that have been embargoed are actually put into the public realm.

"It's very, very disappointing."

The commission was on Friday due to announce an extensive shake-up of electoral boundaries, creating four new seats, but the news leaked out ahead of time on Thursday afternoon, with the Fairfax Media publication, the North West Star, publishing the story first.

It forced the commission to publish the full document online on Thursday night.

Chairman Hugh Botting, who said he was "cross" about the leak, said the document needed to be forwarded to printers and copies went to regional newspapers for ads.

"We rely very much of course on the integrity of those organisations ... so that all may get to know its content at the same time," Mr Botting said.

"Sadly as you'd be aware, that hasn't happened.

"It would seem that one printer may have decided to publish that document yesterday."

Mr Botting said the commission would take advice on what, if any, action would be taken "in relation to that breach of confidentiality".

"It may mean that we have to look to our practices and procedures to see if they need to be revised to avoid it happening again," he said.

Mr Botting said he did not know if an offence had been committed, or if charges would follow.

"We will simply have to take advice," he said.

"I can express my displeasure and I think at the moment that's as far as I can go."
