The United States Geological Survey has said that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake has been recorded off the west coast of Nicaragua.
Officials have warned that the quake may prompt tsunami waves, just as a hurricane arrived in the Caribbean coasts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
The Pacific tsunami warning centre said “hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300km of the earthquake epicentre”.
The earthquake stuck at a depth of 33km around 154km south-southwest of Puerto Triunfo in El Salvador, per the US Geological Survey.

Nicaragua's one-time revolutionary Daniel Ortega returned to power on a manifesto of labour rights and power to the people. But a decade on, workers are fleeing horrific abuse inside the country's factories.
Activist Josefa says Ortega's 21st century, neo-liberal agenda "promised better, more dignified jobs". But in the country's free zones or maquilas - established to encourage foreign investment - "that’s not what happened". Under Ortega's leadership, a culture of fear has silenced claims of horrific abuse and maltreatment in the country's factories. Maria and Ana make textiles for a Korean company inside the free zone. "We put up with humiliation, we put up with many things", says Maria. Ana, who was electrocuted by faulty machines says "the Korean didn’t want me to go to the hospital, he told me that I just had to relax". Now Josefa is battling to return to a time when workers "knew our rights - and how to defend them". Can these women find a voice against the corporate might of global industry?

El Salvador is set to eclipse Honduras as the country with the highest homicide rate in the world. There have already been over 5,700 murders this year in a country with a population of just over six million. El Salvador’s murder rate is now the highest it’s been since the end of the country’s brutal civil war — there is on average around one murder an hour.
The staggering death toll follows the breakdown of a truce between powerful, rival gangs and the government. Police and military are now combatting the gangs head-on and, as part of its so-called "iron fist" strategy, gang members are being charged with a new crime — membership of a terrorist organization.
VICE News correspondent Danny Gold headed to El Salvador to investigate what many are now calling a war between the street gangs and the government.

Windmills designed to generate power for future generations.
Nicaragua needs to turn to alternative energy.
The country has successfully put an end to rolling blackouts that frequently left the country without power for hours but the government is struggling to pay energy costs.
Oil prices have peaked at more than $147 during the last year.
Nearly 80 percent of the oil Nicaragua consumes is provided at a discount by Venezuela.
President Hugo Chavez is a close ally of the Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega.
Now energy-starved Nicaragua is turning to wind as it tries to reduce its dependency on oil-based power.
In 2008 the country began operating 19 windmills.
It s part of Nicaragua s efforts to reduce its dependence on oil-based energy to just 3 percent by 2013.
The 126-metre 410-feet high windmills installed by Suzlon Energy Ltd. of Pune India were set up on the edge of Lake Nicaragua.
They sit in the shadow of the twin volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas on the lake s Ometepe Island and have become a tourist attraction of sorts.
The country has also turned to geothermal power from volcanoes hydroelectric power generated by rivers and sugarcane based ethanol.
Those sources provide 34 percent of Nicaragua s energy.
Construction Manager Jose Angel Prati Engineer is behind the idea but expresses concerns about the long term financing of the green policies.
There is a business philosophy of renewable and green energy. But of course you also have to find a financial balance. Because you cannot keep the dream save the planet if you don t have good economic support.
Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli says the $90 million project contributes to 6 percent of the country s total energy needs.
Even if oil prices remained at current prices and even though we are producing oil from here to about 6 7 years we will not be using oil to generate energy.
Rappaccioli says the project will save about $9 million a year in fuel costs at current prices.
The lead developer on the operation is Arctas Capital Group LP of Houston Texas which says it is in advanced stages of development for another 40-megawatt installation.

Since its independence, Nicaragua has undergone periods of political unrest, dictatorship, and fiscal crisis—the most notable causes that led to the Nicaraguan Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Nicaragua is a representative democratic republic.
The mixture of cultural traditions has generated substantial diversity in art and literature, particularly the latter given the literary contributions of Nicaraguan poets and writers, including Rubén Darío, Pablo Antonio Cuadra and Ernesto Cardenal. The biological diversity, warm tropical climate and active volcanoes make Nicaragua an increasingly popular tourist destination.

El Salvador is set to eclipse Honduras as the country with the highest homicide rate in the world. There have already been over 5,700 murders this year in a country with a population of just over six million. El Salvador’s murder rate is now the highest it’s been since the end of the country’s brutal civil war — there is on average around one murder an hour. The staggering death toll follows the breakdown of a truce between powerful, rival gangs and the government. Police and military are now combatting the gangs head-on and, as part of its so-called "iron fist" strategy, gang members are being charged with a new crime — membership of a terrorist organization. VICE News correspondent Danny Gold headed to El Salvador to investigate what many are now calling a war between the street gangs and the government. Windmills designed to generate power for future generations. Nicaragua needs to turn to alternative energy. The country has successfully put an end to rolling blackouts that frequently left the country without power for hours but the government is struggling to pay energy costs. Oil prices have peaked at more than $147 during the last year. Nearly 80 percent of the oil Nicaragua consumes is provided at a discount by Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez is a close ally of the Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega. Now energy-starved Nicaragua is turning to wind as it tries to reduce its dependency on oil-based power. In 2008 the country began operating 19 windmills. It s part of Nicaragua s efforts to reduce its dependence on oil-based energy to just 3 percent by 2013. The 126-metre 410-feet high windmills installed by Suzlon Energy Ltd. of Pune India were set up on the edge of Lake Nicaragua. They sit in the shadow of the twin volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas on the lake s Ometepe Island and have become a tourist attraction of sorts. The country has also turned to geothermal power from volcanoes hydroelectric power generated by rivers and sugarcane based ethanol. Those sources provide 34 percent of Nicaragua s energy. Construction Manager Jose Angel Prati Engineer is behind the idea but expresses concerns about the long term financing of the green policies. There is a business philosophy of renewable and green energy. But of course you also have to find a financial balance. Because you cannot keep the dream save the planet if you don t have good economic support. Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli says the $90 million project contributes to 6 percent of the country s total energy needs. Even if oil prices remained at current prices and even though we are producing oil from here to about 6 7 years we will not be using oil to generate energy. Rappaccioli says the project will save about $9 million a year in fuel costs at current prices. The lead developer on the operation is Arctas Capital Group LP of Houston Texas which says it is in advanced stages of development for another 40-megawatt installation.

Nicaragua's one-time revolutionary Daniel Ortega returned to power on a manifesto of labour rights and power to the people. But a decade on, workers are fleeing horrific abuse inside the country's factories.
Activist Josefa says Ortega's 21st century, neo-liberal agenda "promised better, more dignified jobs". But in the country's free zones or maquilas - established to encourage foreign investment - "that’s not what happened". Under Ortega's leadership, a culture of fear has silenced claims of horrific abuse and maltreatment in the country's factories. Maria and Ana make textiles for a Korean company inside the free zone. "We put up with humiliation, we put up with many things", says Maria. Ana, who was electrocuted by faulty machines says "the Korean didn’t want me to go to the hospital, he told me that I just had to relax". Now Josefa is battling to return to a time when workers "knew our rights - and how to defend them". Can these women find a voice against the corporate might of global industry?

El Salvador is set to eclipse Honduras as the country with the highest homicide rate in the world. There have already been over 5,700 murders this year in a country with a population of just over six million. El Salvador’s murder rate is now the highest it’s been since the end of the country’s brutal civil war — there is on average around one murder an hour.
The staggering death toll follows the breakdown of a truce between powerful, rival gangs and the government. Police and military are now combatting the gangs head-on and, as part of its so-called "iron fist" strategy, gang members are being charged with a new crime — membership of a terrorist organization.
VICE News correspondent Danny Gold headed to El Salvador to investigate what many are now calling a war between the street gangs and the government.

Nicaragua needs to turn to alternative energy.
The country has successfully put an end to rolling blackouts that frequently left the country without power for hours but the government is struggling to pay energy costs.
Oil prices have peaked at more than $147 during the last year.
Nearly 80 percent of the oil Nicaragua consumes is provided at a discount by Venezuela.
President Hugo Chavez is a close ally of the Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega.
Now energy-starved Nicaragua is turning to wind as it tries to reduce its dependency on oil-based power.
In 2008 the country began operating 19 windmills.
It s part of Nicaragua s efforts to reduce its dependence on oil-based energy to just 3 percent by 2013.
The 126-metre 410-feet high windmills installed by Suzlon Energy Ltd. of Pune India were set up on the edge of Lake Nicaragua.
They sit in the shadow of the twin volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas on the lake s Ometepe Island and have become a tourist attraction of sorts.
The country has also turned to geothermal power from volcanoes hydroelectric power generated by rivers and sugarcane based ethanol.
Those sources provide 34 percent of Nicaragua s energy.
Construction Manager Jose Angel Prati Engineer is behind the idea but expresses concerns about the long term financing of the green policies.
There is a business philosophy of renewable and green energy. But of course you also have to find a financial balance. Because you cannot keep the dream save the planet if you don t have good economic support.
Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli says the $90 million project contributes to 6 percent of the country s total energy needs.
Even if oil prices remained at current prices and even though we are producing oil from here to about 6 7 years we will not be using oil to generate energy.
Rappaccioli says the project will save about $9 million a year in fuel costs at current prices.
The lead developer on the operation is Arctas Capital Group LP of Houston Texas which says it is in advanced stages of development for another 40-megawatt installation.

A lucrative deal struck between Nicaragua and Taiwan is forging an alliance in the face of fierce Chinese opposition.
Nicaragua is fighting Taiwan's corner as the tiger economy seeks its own representation in the United Nations despite threats from mainland China.
At the same time, Taiwan continues to plough investments worth hundreds of millions of U-S dollars into Nicaragua's struggling economy.
Taiwan-run factories such as these provide succour to an ailing economy.
Nicaragua, still recovering from the ravages of civil war, needs foreign investment and job creation.
Unfortunately, the conditions for workers employed in such places have raised international concern.
But any factory job is highly prized in a country with more than 50 per cent unemployment so people are prepared to put up with the low wages and lack of job security.
Taiwan is one of the biggest investors in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua's president Alberto Aleman recently visited the most famous of tiger economies in Asia and returned with deals worth 150 (m) million U-S dollars.
The financial boost has its own price, and a politically sensitive one.
China has threatened allies backing Taiwan in its fight for recognised economic independence.
Nicaragua's government has responded with cool disregard for China's disapproval.

Hi all, this is a video project I made for AP Spanish. It details the various aspects (history, people, food, etc.) of a 3 week trip I took to Estelí, Nicaragua in summer 2015 with an organization called Global Glimpse. I had the opportunity to teach English, make new friends, immerse myself in the Nicaraguan culture, and lead a service project. It was definitely an amazing experience. It details the various aspects (history, people, food, etc.) of a 3 week trip I took to Estelí, Nicaragua in summer 2015 with an organization called Global Glimpse. I had the opportunity to teach English, make new friends, immerse myself in the Nicaraguan culture, and lead a service project. It was definitely an amazing experience. I hope you enjoy this video because I definitely had fun making it.

USF Global Brigades - Public Health Brigade - Nicaragua 2016
This is our story--12 Public Health Brigadiers from the University of South Florida Chapter of Global Brigades arrive in Nicaragua, eager to meet the community that we came to help. In the rural areas of Nicaragua, where agriculture is a primary source of income, there exist people that do not have access to the basic commodities that we too often take for granted; people do not have a sink, a shower or a toilet. Turning on your faucet for running water translates to walking down to the nearest well, filling up several buckets of water and carrying them back up the hill. We learned a lot about these people, as they learned a lot about us. We created two latrines, sinks, showers, septic tanks and concrete floors for two families. INSS -Nicaragua: Microentrepreneur experience at health clinics
EA Consultants prepared this video in 2007 during a randomized evaluation of the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute's pilot program to extend social security health insurance to the informal sector. The participants were surveyed for the evaluation and randomly selected a ticket at the end of each survey. Some "winners" received subsidies for social security health insurance. The video documents some of the experiences of these independent workers (market vendors in urban Managua) when they attended private and public clinics that participated in the insurance program. The evaluation was co-funded by USAID and the Global Development Network and implemented by EA Conusltants and the PSP-One program.

At least 16 people have died from the disease in the Achuapa region of Nicaragua.
Authorities believe the disease was spread by millions of rats which fled their usual habitats during heavy rains in recent months.

"It's a region which is generally the poorest in the country, where the combination of ecological, individual, and nutritional elements, made it somehow ripe for a problem like this. Conditions and triggers for leptopirosis generally are conditions that change radically in the habitat and behavior of man as well as animals."

Those infected experience symptoms like vomiting, fever, and intense headaches, and muscle aches.
Specialists from the United States, and Cuba are working together with Nicaraguan doctors to treat and prevent the disease.
Now that it has been identified, specialists are working on treating those affected while urging those at risk to take precautions.

"One of the things that can be done is take measures with possible carriers - animals - with rats, or de-raticizing, and other domestic animals that there must be an investigation of which animals are implicated in the disease. Another thing is to take preventive measures with people who are at risk of getting sick - those people that because of their job, or because of where they live, are more in contact with the possible carriers of the disease."

One specialist says leptospirosis became a great cause of alarm in Nicaragua. However, the cholera epidemic has claimed 145 victims in the last three years.

The participants were surveyed for the evaluation and randomly selected a ticket at the end of each survey. Some "winners" received subsidies for social security health insurance. The video documents some of the experiences of these independent workers (market vendors in urban Managua) when they attended private and public clinics that participated in the insurance program. The evaluation was co-funded by USAID and the Global Development Network and implemented by EA Conusltants and the PSP-One program.

After feeling refreshed and rejuvenated from the beautiful beaches of El Salvador, Macca and Brianna got back to doing what they do best – backpacking around and experiencing all a country has to offer, this time in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua came with the tag as being a bit of a favourite amongst other travellers, so Macca and Brianna we’re extremely excited to see what it had to offer and whether it lived up to its reputation for themselves.
What they discovered was a country of unparalleled beauty, kind and generous people, and enough adventure activities to keep any adrenaline junkie happy.
In this episode Macca and Brianna try out volcano boarding for the first time, hike to the top of El Hoyo before swimming in a crater lake, spend a night on the tiles in San Juan del Sur, even manage to pick up a new travelling companion, before finishing off zooming around the island Ometepe.
In the end, Nicaragua truly lived up to its reputation, and it quickly became one of our favourite countries in the whole world. Next up, we went to go and see what Costa Rica had to offer.
