Then and Now: Atlantic Road by Brixton Road
Photographic comparisons of old and modern views of Lambeth



c. 1905 A group of Edwardian ladies cross Atlantic Road on a glorious summer's morning. Note the gentlemen wearing straw boaters. To the left can be seen the elevated wooden canopy of Brixton railway station. On the right hand side of the street you can see a line of gas lamps illuminating the premises of J W Clark Exchange Stores, with the clock above reading a quarter past eleven.

Dec 2003 The same scene taken on a very wet and very windy winter's morning. The elevated railway station is still there, although the station canopy is much reduced in length. The high level bridge in the distance has been replaced, and you can see a container train passing overhead. The Exchange Stores were destroyed during the WW2 blitz and have been replaced by some unremarkable modern buildings. This road is often completely jammed with traffic during the daytime, and needs avenging squads of traffic wardens to keep the traffic moving.
