A Malaysian task force has frozen six bank accounts following allegations that Prime Minister Najib Razak received nearly $700 million in public funds. However it did not reveal the identities of the account holders. Meanwhile, Malaysia's former leader, Mahathir Mohamed, has called on prime minister Najib to show public proof that his assets are legal. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Mahathir accused the prime minister of having what he called a lavish lifestyle, which has been closely scrutinized in the local press. We asked the Prime Minister's office to respond to Mr Mahathir's comments on these allegations but they declined. However, Prime Minister Najib has previously issued a statement on Facebook saying that the various allegations made against him are "unsubstantiated" and "outrageous." Th...

Malaysia has no other option but to face the current volatility of the ringgit while focusing on enhancing its economic fundamentals. Second Finance Minister, Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani, said, although Malaysia had previously pegged its currency during the 1997 economic crisis, such move is not practical now in an open global economy as the country will forfeit its economic growth. He said the government would not peg the local currency or impose capital controls, despite its recent volatility and certainly would not increase the interest rate to attract foreign investments. He further added that increasing the interest rate to attract foreign investors was also never an option as it would raise the household debt in this country. Elaborating, he said the fundamental cause of the ringgi...
Shot, then blown to smithereens with military grade explosives, the 2006 killing of Altantuya Shaariibuu was one of Malaysia’s most sensational murder cases. Even though years have passed since the young Mongolian woman’s death, it is one case that has refused to disappear. If anything, the mystery has deepened. 101 East investigates those who were involved in the case and asks whether the two men convicted of her murder are “fall guys” for others who ordered the killing of Shaariibuu.

Rian Maelzer take an in-depth look into Malaysia's usage of foreign workers from poorer neighboring countries to take up the undesired jobs in its manufacturing sector. While the abundance of cheap foreign labor in a country with staggeringly low unemployment rates may seem to be a blessing on the surface, some economists are pointing out the hidden economic dangers of long-term dependency on such workers.

With low commodity prices, an exodus of foreign funds, a slumping currency and financial scandals, it's been a rough year for Malaysia but things are turning around. The World Economic Forum now ranks Malaysia among the 20 most competitive countries in the world, beating out Australia(21th), Ireland(24th) and South Korea(26th). The country scored particularly highly in how it facilitates trade and manages its financial markets. Over the past five years, the government has been working to trim red tape, identify key growth areas and boost private investment under what it calls its Economic Transformation Programme. CCTV's Rian Maelzer reports from Kuala Lumpur.

In this travel video travel guide to Malaysia, I travel to Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, and to Terangganu, the country's second-largest city. I start off my trip by exploring Kenyir Lake, located just west of Terangganu, which is actually the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia (it's the size of Singapore). I head to the far end of the lake by speedboat to go trekking into the hilly jungle where I come across a school of hungry fish waiting for eager tourists like myself to provide them with a cheap snack. I then head back on the lake to explore the many islands that call this lake home. Next, I head back onto the water -- this time onto the ocean -- to do a little squid jigging as part of the first annual Terengganu International Squid Jigging Fest. Squid jigging, for thos...
Travel video about destination Malaysia. Malaysia is an exotic world located in the Far East, full of tradition and history. We begin our journey in Malacca, the oldest city on the southwest coast of the Peninsular Malaysia that boasts six hundred years of history. Both Portuguese and Jesuit settlers lived here for a hundred and thirty years and introduced their culture to the region. The city’s history dates back to 1403 when Hindu prince, Paramesware of the Sri Vijaya Realm in Sumatra, established a sultanate. The Chinese-dominated area of the city extends across the opposite banks of the river where the mainly two storey residential and business premises are densely packed together. In contrast, the Cheng Hoon Temple is one of the oldest temples in Malaysia and nearby is the Kampung Klin...
