The Kek Lok Si Temple (Chinese: 极乐寺; Penang Hokkien for "Temple of Supreme Bliss" or "Temple of Sukhavati" or "Jile Si") is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam in Penang facing the sea and commanding an impressive view, and is one of the best known temples on the island. It is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. It is also an important pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia. This entire complex of temples was built over a period from 1890 to 1930, an inspirational initiative of Beow Lean, the Abbot. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Rama VI (Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas) with 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, and the 30.2 metres (99 ft) tall bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.
Mahayana Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism and traditional Chinese rituals blend into a harmonious whole, both in the temple architecture and artwork as well as in the daily activities of worshippers. The temple is heavily commercialised with shops at every level and inside the main temple complexes selling all religious paraphernalia.
Air Itam (Chinese: 亚依淡, Penang Hokkien: ai tam) (Malay for black water) is a suburb of George Town, Penang.
Located in the valley between Bukit Batu Lanchang (Batu Lanchang Hill), Bukit Penara and Bukit Bendera (Penang Hill), this suburb of George Town is connected to the city by two main roads, i.e. Jalan Air Itam and Lorong Batu Lanchang. It is also connected to Paya Terubong and the south of the island via Jalan Paya Terubong. The town covers a broad area that incorporates Farlim, Thean Teik Estate, Rifle Range, Kampung Bahru, Kampung Melayu, Hill Railway Road, Hye Keat Estate, extending as far east as the junction with York Road.
Captain Francis Light had established agriculture on the island which was based on growing pepper. Pepper was first cultivated in Air Itam valley. Today, flowers, fruits and vegetables are still grown on the surrounding hills. Nutmeg is a popular fruit found in this part of Penang Island.
A wealthy monk by the name of Fa Kong, which means "Empty Dharma", had built a zoo here . He was said to be a practitioner of Zen Buddhism. The Penang Zoological Gardens, which was open in the 1920s, houses different kinds of animals and was the earliest zoo in the country. It was closed down in the 1940s due to excessive high maintenance. It was located in a plot of land which today is known as Jalan Zoo (Zoo Road).
Penang is a state in Malaysia located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, by the Strait of Malacca.
Penang state is bordered by Kedah in the north and east, and Perak in the south. It is composed of two parts — Penang Island, where the seat of government is, and Seberang Perai (formerly Province Wellesley in English) on the Malay Peninsula.
Highly urbanised and industrialised, Penang is one of the most developed and economically important states in the country, as well as a thriving tourist destination. Penang has the third-highest Human Development Index in Malaysia, after the state of Selangor and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur. Its heterogeneous population is highly diverse in ethnicity, culture, language and religion. A resident of Penang is colloquially known as a Penangite (in English),Penang lang (in the local Penang Hokkien dialect) or a Penangkaran (In Tamil)
The name of "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means "island of the areca nut palm" (Areca catechu, family Palmae). The name Penang may refer either to the island of Penang (Pulau Pinang) or the state of Penang (Negeri Pulau Pinang). In Malay, Penang's capital George Town was called and labelled in old maps as Tanjung Penaga (Cape Penaigre), named after the many ballnut trees (also known as Alexandrian laurels, Calophyllum inophyllum) on the coast, but now usually shortened as Tanjung (the Cape).
Georgetown or George Town may refer to:
A Buddhist temple is the place of worship for Buddhists, the followers of Buddhism. They include the structures called stupa, wat and pagoda in different regions and languages. Temples in Buddhism represent the pure land or pure environment of a Buddha. Traditional Buddhist temples are designed to inspire inner and outer peace. Its structure and architecture varies from region to region. Usually, the temple consists not only of its buildings, but also the surrounding environment.

Read my blog post about how to visit Kek Lok Si Temple: http://migrationology.com/2015/07/kek-lok-si-temple-penang/ There are a lot of delicious Penang street food dishes to eat when you visit, but perhaps one of the most famous is asam laksa, a speciality found uniquely of this version in Penang. There are many famous places to eat asam laksa on the island, but probably the most famous is Air Itam Asam Laksa, located near Kek Lok Si Temple in the Air Itam (also spelled Ayer Itam) area of the city. Since we were staying in George Town, we decided to make a day trip out of going to Kek Lok Si temple and eating at two different noodle restaurants. From George Town we headed over to the bus station and caught a bus towards Air Itam. Though we had no idea where we were going, I followed the ...
This is a travel video of us exploring the enormous Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple of Supreme Bliss (极乐寺 or 極樂寺) located in Air Itam, Penang, Malaysia. With elements of Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese traditions it's one of the largest Buddhist temples in all of SE Asia. In order to get there we took bus number 203 from Komplex Komptar for a forty minute journey getting off at Air Itam market. Within walking distance we first had to pass several shops selling souvenirs and trinkets before we finally entered into the temple. One of the first things you notice when entering the temple are the turtles swimming and feeding in small pond. As you further explore the temples it's impressive to note all of the lanterns and Buddhist sculptures. To visit the final section of the temples one can take ...

It's our last few weeks here in Malaysia. Lyvonn and I thought it'll be a great idea to spend a weekend with our parents in Penang. It also helps us put together an article that we're truly passionate about - Penang. Why you ask? Well Penang is not only a place in Malaysia with loads of culture and activities, it is also a food heaven - and yes, Malaysians do love their food. Whilst most people in the world eat to live, Malaysians will gladly agree with the reverse statement that we live to eat. Penang in my opinion is amongst the most interesting places in the world, it's culture and heritage is just so evident everywhere you go. It is no wonder why UNESCO rated it amongst the world heritage sites. In the short time that I'm in Penang, I've only manage to cover a few places. Partiall...

One of the popular tourist spots in Pulau Pinang. The pagoda and the temple are both striking, and the commanding view of Georgetown from the top is also worth the trip.
In this documentary, I visit the wild and weird island of Penang. Taking a city walk around the tourist area, seeing 2-meter-long monitor lizards, visiting Kek Lok Si Temple (Southeast Asia's largest), trying out different restaurants, talking to shop owners, touring the old British Quarter of Georgetown with an old friend and hiking through Penang National Park to visit the turtle hatchery, are all highlights of this hour-long journey into one of Southeast Asia's hidden gems. This film is part two of the Travel Geek: Documentary Malaysia series. Part One was released last Monday, Travel Geek Short: Malacca. And hopefully I'll be able to crank out the next edition, Travel Geek Short: Kuala Lumpur, by next Monday. So stay tuned and be sure to subscribe to get the videos when they are...

The total distance from Penang Kek Lok Si Temple carpark to Lean Chiau Yean is about 8.2 KM. From Air Itam Dam's carpark to La Chiau yean is about 5.8 KM. First 2 KM climb is pretty steep and challenge the rider to give up. Well, the tough guy will get thru. Most of the 1st time rider riding the Lean Chiau Yean would experience the tendency of lifting the front wheel. I almost got my leg cramp in the middle of the path and i also stopped for few times. Noticed that there are deep ravine beside the trail and it is dangerous too !.
When I think of the most under-rated countries to visit in SE Asia Malaysia comes to mind. With a rich culture and diversity - unlike any other nation in Southeast Asia - there is something for everyone. This is the first attempt to ride to Penang Ching Kwan Si Temple for most of the Bkt Minyak MTB riders. The distance is about 4KM slightly further than Bkt Mertajam Tok Kun hill of 3.8 KM. Of course the trail is much better than Tok Kun due to less people along the trail. It is a very pleasant ride for all of us that we could get a very cool fresh air at the hillside. Ching Kwan Si temple trail is to take a right turn and an uphill slope just after the entrance of Kek Lok Si temple.
