I nearly like this series because it has SO MUCH POTENTIAL but ultimately? It falls as flat as a pancake being run over by an elephant in a a steamroller. (Beautiful imagery, I know omg.) I just really struggle with superhero books! Unless it's on screen, they so often just don't have the impact that's needed. (For me anyway.)

Plus I wasn't a huge fan of Zeroes but I wanted to give Swarm a go because (A) I was sent it for review, and (B) WHO KNOWS, RIGHt?!? Sometimes sequels are better!! (Note:

I just finished the first book and loved it. It's going to be a year until the next book comes out, but already this is me;

10/18/16: Review:

Oh my god, this book was amazing, I devoured it even though I'd been in a low-key book slump this whole year.

Also, is it just me, or is Ethan (Scam) just like more interesting and way better than all the characters? Nobody seems to like him, but he's always been my favorite. <3

We definitely get more in deep with everyone character rounding the

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

All I can say right now is whoa. And I need the next book ASAP! Swarm ends on an incredibly painful cliffhanger and I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself for the next 12 months while I wait for the next book to be released…

This trilogy is getting better and better. I enjoyed Zeroes immensely but wasn’t completely sold on all the characters

While Zeroes was a great introduction into the kids that make up the superhero squad, Swarm amped up the pace and the storyline as the Zeroes encounter their first villain.

The story starts off with a bang, as the Zeroes have opened up a new nightclub called the Dish, which they use to experiment with their powers. As people are drawn to the club, they soon meet two people who are like them and also have powers – Davey and Ren

A physical ARC of this book was kindly provided by the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

I will start my review with the mini review which I wrote for the first book in this series, Zeroes, on Goodreads:

"It turns out that I read this book last year! And while I can’t write a full review because it’s no longer fresh, I do remember that I found the superpowers to be extremely unique. I also liked some characters, but hated others. And the plot, while action-packed wasn’t really my cup

I received a copy of Swarm from Allen and Unwin New Zealand to review. I read and reviewed the first book, Zeroes, last year. You can read that here.

I mentioned in my review of Zeroes that I’d be interested to know how involved each author is in writing these books. I think I read that a year ago and I still haven’t looked into it. Hopefully I’ll know by the time the next book comes out.

I felt like Swarm had a bigger threat for the Zeroes than the first book had. I remember them having to deal w

Zeroes was one of my favorite books last year. This is a worthy sequel. The characters and plot are just as memorable and exciting, there are some new fun characters with equally awesome and terrifying powers, and there seemed to be even more at stake in this book than the last. I hope my favorite character makes a reappearance in the third book, and I can't wait to see who else will join the story.

Thank you Edelweiss for the ARC

NO NO NO NOT OKAY.

Some stuff I didn't like, some stuff I loved. Thibault is a precious baby too glorious for this world, Flicker is a fierce and majestic sweetheart, and I love Ethan because I can't resist a self-loathing underdog. That ending redeemed the book for me even though I AM NOT OKAY WITH IT.

As a second novel in a series, it exceeds expectations. It is by far better then the first one. The characters are more relatable and I found that I was able to read a lot more depth and meaning in the characters and their powers then I was able to find in the first one. As I have just finished this book I am sort of shocked. The ending is horrible and inconclusive. It is almost yell worthy. It is defiantly an ending that will take awhile to get over and will leave me wandering the house instead ...more

I think I liked this one more than the first one. Still took 80% of the book for crazy action to start. My favorite characters (and really the only reason I am still reading these) are Flicker and Anon. I think their superpowers are the most creative and interesting. UH BUT THAT ENDING KILLED ME.

And the final wait begins......

THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING.
I cannot express how much I ADORE this series. The concept is fascinating, the characters fantastic, the plot exhilarating.
The Zeroes' powers are all brilliantly original. I love how you really see what a trade off it is to have these powers - and what disadvantages they bring. Often what happens is that characters just have amazing powers and occasionally complain about how terrible their lives have becomes since discovering them, when really their lives seem pretty excit

All I can really say here is... read this series.
The POV switches are flawless, the characters are all incredibly varied, the plot it quick and convoluted in the best kind of way.
The premise is about teens with kind-of lame super powers, but this book is so much more than that. It has so many layers that it's hard to sum up.
It gives us an excellent look at the moral conundrum the group faces of trying to be good, but wondering if that's possible with powers like theirs that are largely

Swarm , the second book in the Zeroes series, picks up six months after the events of Zeroes , also referred to as "the Summer of Suck" by Ethan Cooper, aka Scam. The team, still led by Nate Saldana, aka Bellwether, have started a night club ("technically it's more of a private party") so they can experiment with their powers and have a place to retreat to. Ethan's job is wrangling a crowd and it's on a party night that he accidentally invites two new Zeroes to their club and take a turn for ...more

Fresh book from the library, new enough that I was cutting the edges of pages open - which was weird. A pretty good follow-up. Pretty much the same folks but now with a little bit of romance and a bit of a body count. And a somewhat unfulfilling ending. Basically most of the character get tortured in this one. And then the powers end up looking a little more cookie cutter, other than Ethan. But if you wonder how they get away with stuff and succeed, well they kind of don't. Still a quick readabl ...more

Not as good as the first. The plot took too long to get moving and I didn't care as much about the characters as I did the first time. That said, the world was still interesting and the authors raised fair concerns about what superpowers would actually be like. It was an engaging read and I will read the next one.

If you haven't read Zeroes, you need to read it. It's about kids with superpowers. Though, they're probably not superpowers you don't want.
I stayed up until the early hours of the morning last night to finish Swarm, the second book in the Zeroes series. This book took me on such a rollercoaster ride that it tugged on my heart strings multiple times. Each of these characters are perfect and so well developed, I often found myself doubting that there are three different authors (which is fantasti

What an evil cliffhanger, but what an awesome ride! The first book had potential to go to interesting places, but this blew my mind. The characters have developed a ton, and I am glad there is a LGBTQA couple on the team, and not the horrid love triangle that the first book was hinting at. I need to know what happens next.

Swarm was insane. I didn't think the stakes could get higher than Zeroes (book 1) but I was wrong. I was so, so wrong.
This book picks up a few months after the events of Zereos. The characters are healing. They even started a nightclub (well, an illegal night club, but still...). Then enter Glitch and Coin, two more zeroes on the run from someone... or something. They not only turn the Petri Dish (the nightclub) upside down, but they drop some pretty scary news while doing it.
Now it is up to th

FUCKING.
CLIFFHANGER.

It's hard to explain how I feel about this. On one hand I really liked it, on the other hand there were some parts that FUCKING PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH.

1. Parents.
For whatever reason, people really hate Missing Parent Syndrome, which is common in YA books. It's highly unrealistic, plus, most of them would get sicced by CPS and thrown behind bars for criminal negligence. But I get why it happens. It's no fun to read books where the parents are obnoxiously meddling, 100% of th

It's a band of teenagers with super cools powers banding together to save the world! WHYWOULD YOU NOT READ A BOOK LIKE THIS?!

2001

One the main reasons I love this series is so much is because a) all the characters don't claim to be heroes or want to be heroes. They're all average teenagers. Like real average teenagers who talk like one, party, have relationships, make stupid mistakes. And b) their powers aren't the conve

This book was sent to me by the publisher, Allen & Unwin, at no cost. It's available now; RRP $19.99.

When I read the first book in this series, Zeroes, I was a bit underwhelmed. I felt like it didn't fully deliver on its promises - not quite dramatic enough, somehow, or heroic, or problematic. I didn't hate it... I was just a bit disappointed. So while I was very excited to receive the sequel to review, I experienced some trepidation.

And then I picked it up. And then I couldn't put it down.

Last year, I liked Zeroes, but I thought it had a few flaws - namely, its tendency to highlight the least interesting characters in the titular group, and at considerable length too. I have to wonder if Westerfeld, Lanagan, and Biancotti got similar complaints from other readers, and worked to make improvements in Swarm.

For sure, this sequel improved on its predecessor on so many levels. I
