Sudan (i/suːˈdæn/ or /suːˈdɑːn/;Arabic: السودان, as-Sūdān), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان, Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), sometimes called North Sudan, is an Arab state in North Africa (sometimes also considered to be part of the Middle East). It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. The population of Sudan is a combination of indigenous inhabitants of Nile Valley, and descendants of migrants from the Arabian Peninsula. Due to the process of Arabisation common throughout the rest of the Arab World, today Arab culture predominates in Sudan. The majority of the population of Sudan adheres to Islam. The Nile divides the country between east and west sides.

Inside Story - Is peace possible in South Sudan?
Inside Story - Is peace possible in South Sudan?
Inside Story: South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has signed a peace deal that it is hoped, will end 20 months of war.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people. And brought the country to the brink of famine and economic collapse.
Rebel leader Riek Machar signed the deal last week, but President Kiir had, until on Wednesday, expressed reservations.
The agreement calls for an immediate end to the fighting. And the creation of a demilitarised zone in the capital Juba.
It also calls for a transitional power-sharing government, with Machar returning as South Sudan's Vice President.
But could the two rivals work together again?

A (very) brief overview on how the media portrayal of the conflict in South Sudan doesn't reflect the reality of the conflict on the ground. I haven't gone into much detail on the dynamics of the conflict, but for those of you who are interested, I would recommend starting with Young's book 'The Fate of Sudan', along with Copnall's 'A Poisonous Thorn in Our Hears'. Vincent Makori reports on the South Sudan Peace deal signing by President Salva Kiir Wednesday to end 20 months of civil war. President Salva Kiir, who has led South Sudan since it seceded from Sudan in 2011, had asked for more time for consultations last week, drawing threats of U.N. sanctions, if he failed to ink it within a two-week deadline. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's n

South Sudan became the world's newest state when it seceded from Sudan in 2011 but by December 2013 President Salva Kiir had sacked his entire cabinet and accused his former vice-president Riek Machar of instigating a coup, which sparked off violent clashes in the capital Juba.
The initial conflict may have been based on a power struggle between two of the top members of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement but the divisions between two of the largest ethnic groups, the Dinka and the Nuer, soon became the driving force of tit-for-tat attacks across the country.

Kiir is under pressure from the international community with the threat of more crippling sanctions if the South Sudanese president reneges on the deal. Is peace achievable or is it all too soon for a country still struggling with its tumultuous past?

And could the deal restore peace in South Sudan?
Presenter: Laura Kyle
Guests:
Casie Copeland - South Sudan Analyst from the International Crisis Group.
Michael White - South Sudan Operations Adviser for Doctors Without Borders.

Le Riche and Arnold's 'South Sudan: From Revolution to Independence' is also good.
For shorter articles on the conflict, I would mainly rely on reports from various organisations like ICG, HRW and Small Arms Survey. Some good links are:
http://www.smallarmssurveysudan.org/fileadmin/docs/working-papers/HSBA-WP-20-Armed-Violence-Southern-Sudan.pdf

http://www.crisisgroup.org/en/regions/africa/horn-of-africa/south-sudan/223-sudan-and-south-sudan-s-merging-conflicts.aspx
Jok and Hutchinson have also done some great work on identity issues in South Sudan - they have both written a lot but I would particularly recommend http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/525368?sid=21105962592633&uid;=4&uid;=2&uid;=3738032

July 9, 2013 marked a moment of hope for South Sudan when it split from Sudan to become the world's newest nation.
A chance to put behind decades of war and hostilities.
But after a little more than two years of freedom, the country was plunged back into civil war.
Fighting began in the capital Juba in December 2013, when president Salva Kiir accused his sacked deputy Riek Machar of planning a coup.
A report by the UN mission in the country said a 'recent upsurge in fighting has not only been marked by allegations of "killing, rape, abduction, looting, arson and displacement, but by a new brutality and intensity."
It went on: "The scope and level of cruelty that has characterised the reports suggests a depth of antipathy that exceeds political differences."
With South Sudan now in the grip of a humanitarian crisis, what can be done to bring peace to this fledgling state?
Presenter: Adrian Finighan
Guests:
Elias Nyamlell Wakoson - Researcher from the Ebony Center for Strategic Studies, a Think Tank promoting good governance in South Sudan.

Counting the Cost - South Sudan: Economics of a failed state
South Sudan is only four years old, but the world's youngest nation tops the rank of failed states worldwide.
After decades of conflict with its neighbour Sudan, long-sought autonomy in 2011 was meant to be a dream come true, but the country has been wracked by violence ever since.
Thousands of people have been killed, and over a million displaced, as President Salva Kiir battles his rival, rebel leader and former vice president, Riek Machar.
Amid the chaos, rising inflation and poverty has left 3.8 million people without enough food - raising the spectre of famine.
Despite its vast oil reserves, the country is producing at only one-third of its oil capacity, compared with levels from 2011, and the government is earning only $10 per barrel compared to the international price of $60.
Also on Counting the Cost: Behind Saudi Arabia's stock market opening; the future of Afghanistan's lamb farmers; and the rise of Formula E.
Catherine Soi reports from Juba on the local businesses that are suffering due to the lost revenue.

Later, Vincent gets a reaction from Riek Machar, South Sudan Opposition Leader.

Late last year, South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, accused his former vice president, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup d'état amid accusations of rampant corruption within the government. Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's newest sovereign nation is in imminent danger of becoming a failed state.
In February, journalists and filmmakers Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia set out on a grueling mission to locate Machar in his secret hideout in Akobo and get his side of the story. Accompanying was Machot Lat Thiep, a former child soldier and Lost Boy who had advised on South Sudan's constitution and now works as a manager of a Costco in Seattle. Machot acted as a guide of sorts, arranging Pelton and Freccia's rendezvous with Machar through a series of endless satellite-phone calls to old contacts and rebel platoons, who would eventually guide the group to the deposed vice president.
After spending a couple days with Machar, he granted Pelton and Freccia unprecedented access to the front lines of a battle in Malakal, where for the first time in history the pair documented the heretofore mythical White Army as they looted, murdered, and pillaged their way to some twisted interpretation of "victory."
Saving South Sudan is a multi-platform exploration of the horrors of the country's newest civil war. We devoted an entire issue of the magazine to Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia's sprawling 35,000-plus word epic exploration of the crisis in South Sudan. It's a companion piece of sorts; watch the documentary and read the issue or vice versa. But you won't get a full scope of the situation without doing both.

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has warned that they need greater military force to protect civilians in the country and aid agencies are predicting food, water and medical supply shortages. With a humanitarian disaster seemingly on the way, we look at the background to what's going on in South Sudan.

DemocracyNow.org - Peace talks between South Sudan’s warring sides have failed to reach a deal to end a civil war which has claimed tens of thousands of lives in the world’s youngest nation. Last week, the United States proposed implementing a United Nations arms embargo on South Sudan and new sanctions unless the government signs a peace deal to end the conflict. Now the situation in South Sudan is the subject of a new documentary, "We Come as Friends," by Austrian director Hubert Sauper that provides an aerial view of the conflict in Sudan from a shaky, handmade two-seater plane. The film depicts American investors, Chinese oilmen, United N

Enormous caravan trains once traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square kilometres and is the largest desert in the world. Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport. Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the savage climate of the desert and in ancient times, as well as today, the overwhelming heat saps the strength of both man and beast as the daytime temperature can reach a scorching fifty five degrees Celsius. At the foot of the mountain range that we must cross in order to travel deep into the homeland of the Hadendoa we meet a group of wood gatherers. In addition to the trading of camels and goats, the gathering and selling of wood is one of the main sources of income for this unique nomadic people. Without a sound several mounted Hadendoa warriors have approached us. The atmosphere is anything but relaxed and our uncertainty seems to please the warriors who, mounted on camels, are truly menacing. In the past the British army also experienced the wrath of these people. The looks on the faces of the Hadendoa further increases the tension. Finally, after what seems like several minutes, we tentatively step forward. In broken Arabic we try to explain to the warriors that we have journeyed far to meet them. Our initial scepticism is replaced by a long and amicable handshake with their leader that sets our fears to rest. Surrounded by the desert and the Red Sea Mountains and cut off from most of the influences of modern civilization, the legendary Hadendoa Tribe has somehow managed to maintain its unique cultural identity and freedom.

What emerges is a devastating critique of the consequences of cultural and economic imperialism. We speak with Hauper and feature excerpts from the film, which debuts this week in theaters.

South Sudan: Death toll hits 178 in oil tanker explosion
The death toll from Wednesday’s tanker truck explosion in Maridi county in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria has risen to 178, with at least 140 wounded, medical officials said.
Jean Tabou, director of the University Hospital of Juba, confirmed the death toll on Saturday.
The explosion happened in the town of Maridi after the oil tanker overturned on a road about 300 kilometers west of the capital.
After the tanker started to leak, one of the residents lit a cigarette, sparking the explosion.
The South Sudanese government has also declared three days of mourning in the country.

At least 100 people have been killed in an oil tanker explosion in South Sudan. Authorities said the oil tanker veered off the road and overturned. People had flocked around it to scoop up the spilled fuel when it exploded.
More than 60 people died at the scene, including women and children. The tanker crashed on a road some 250 kilometers west of the capital Juba.
Authorities said about 50 people were seriously injured, but the local hospital is running desperately low on basic supplies such as oxygen and painkillers.

Death toll in South Sudan fuel truck blast reaches 182
The death toll in South Sudan from the explosion of a fuel truck this week has risen to 182, a regional official said on Sept.18.
The blast occurred on Sept.16 as crowds gathered around the tanker to gather fuel after it had veered off the road. An official had earlier said the toll could keep rising as South Sudan did not have adequate facilities to treat the burns.
"The death toll has increased to 182 people. However, we are now on the ground evacuating some serious cases to a safe location for medical attention," Wilson Thomas Yanga, Maridi County Commissioner, told Reuters.
Maridi is in Western Equatoria, the region where the blast

More than 60 people died at the scene, including women and children. The tanker crashed on a road some 250 kilometers west of the capital Juba.

Maridi is in Western Equatoria, the region where the blast took place.
Such incidents have happened before in the east African region where fuel tankers often have to travel long distances along potholed roads and pass through poor communities.
There are almost no tarmac roads in South Sudan, one of Africa's poorest nations, which has been mired in conflict since December 2013. Rebels and the government signed a peace deal in August, although the ceasefire has already been violated.
Presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny had said the incident on Sept.16 was not related to the conflict. "This was an accident," he said.

This report from 1991 was the only one to capture the aftermath of the Bor Massacre in South Sudan. With an interview with suspected perpetrator Riek Machar, it is a chilling account of the country's tribal violence.
The Nuer and Dinka tribes - at peace with each other for many years - are now at war. We go into the marshes of southern Sudan - home of the Dinka - to witness the trail of death caused by the new fighting. On the edge of the marshland a vulture picks at a human corpse. The more fortunate subsist on a barely edible paste made from water lily seeds. Includes interviews with SPLA leader Colonel John Gurang and Commander Riak Machar, leader of the breakaway rebels.

The war in South Sudan began in murky circumstances in mid-December, when tribal factions within the country's army, the SPLA, began fighting each other in the center of the capital, Juba. The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar's Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe. Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict. VICE News arrived in Juba and found the army desperate to dispel rumors that rebels were advancing on the capital. Soldiers were keen to take our correspondents on a trip with them into the bush to recapture the strategic city of Bor from the rebels... only the raid didn't turn out quite as they had expected.

The Government of South Sudan was defending its decision to award one company the exclusive rights to handle all cargo destined to the country at the Mombasa Port, saying its due to security.
The move to appoint Panda Freight and Logistics International Company sparked a controversy among players, who said the deal monopolized the trade and amounted to favoritism.
Peter Mwangangi reported.

After twenty months of a deadly civil war, a tentative peace agreement is in place signed between South Sudan and the rebel forces.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit admitted signing the deal despite ‘serious reservations’ with his rival – Riek Machar - the man who will act as his deputy in the new power sharing unity government under the Compromise Peace Agreement.
Kiir is under pressure from the international community with the threat of more crippling sanctions if the South Sudanese president reneges on the deal. Is peace achievable or is it all too soon for a country still struggling with its tumultuous past?

When the winds of change swept across the vast South Sudan, there was euphoria in all the pockets of the country as the citizenry hoped for a new dawn. However, a political dispute in December 2013, plunged the country into war. Thousands of civilians have been killed and millions live in internally displaced camps. Yet there is no end in sight to this conflict. Emmanuel Mutaizibwa, filed this special report on South Sudan.

And could the deal restore peace in South Sudan?

A (very) brief overview on how the media portrayal of the conflict in South Sudan doesn't reflect the reality of the conflict on the ground. I haven't gone into much detail on the dynamics of the conflict, but for those of you who are interested, I would recommend starting with Young's book 'The Fate of Sudan', along with Copnall's 'A Poisonous Thorn in Our Hears'. Le Riche and Arnold's 'South Sudan: From Revolution to Independence' is also good.
For shorter articles on the conflict, I would mainly rely on reports from various organisations like ICG, HRW and Small Arms Survey. Some good links are:
http://www.smallarmssurveysudan.org/fileadmin/docs/working-papers/HSBA-WP-20-Armed-Violence-Southern-Sudan.pdf
http://www.hrw.org/reports/2014/08/07/south-sudan-s-new-war
http://www.crisisgroup.org/en/regions/africa/horn-of-africa/south-sudan/223-sudan-and-south-sudan-s-merging-conflicts.aspx
