Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944), popularly known as the Desert Fox (Wüstenfuchs, listen (help·info)), was a GermanField Marshal of World War II. He won the respect of both his own troops and the enemies he fought.
As one of the few generals who consistently fought the Western Allies (he was never assigned to the Eastern Front), Rommel is regarded as having been a humane and professional officer. His Afrikakorps was never accused of war crimes. Soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely. Furthermore, he ignored orders to kill captured commandos, Jewish soldiers and civilians in all theaters of his command.
Keith Floyd (28 December 1943 – 14 September 2009) was a Britishcelebrity chef, television personality and restaurateur, who hosted cooking shows for the BBC and published many books combining cookery and travel. On television, his eccentric style of presentation endeared him to millions of viewers worldwide.
After three years, finding that he and the Army were "mutually incompatible", Floyd found employment in several catering-related jobs including barman, dishwasher and vegetable peeler.

"The Desert: North Africa (1940-1943)" 19 December 1973
The desert war, starting with Italy's unsuccessful invasion of Egypt and the successive attacks and counter-attacks between Germany and Commonwealth forces and the Afrika Korps's eventual defeat at El Alamein.Interviewees include General Richard O'Connor, Major General Francis de Guingand and Lawrence Durrell.
In 1940 Mussolini deploys a massive army to invade British held Egypt, to capture the Suez Canal and most of all to establish an Italian empire to rival Germany's. So begins a multi-year campaign over a meaningless stretch of desert involving forces from a dozen nations and characterized by persistent attackers, stubborn defenders and ultimately controlled by supply line challenges.
The series has 26 episodes. Producer Jeremy Isaacs asked Noble Frankland, then director of the Imperial War Museum, to list fifteen main campaigns of the war and devoted one episode to each.
The remaining eleven episodes are devoted to other matters, such as the rise ofthe Third Reich, home life in Britain and Germany, the experience of occupationin the Netherlands, and the Nazis' use of genocide.

Rare color film about the war in North Africa after the American landed in 1942 (Operation Torch). It describes the campaign to capture Tunisia by the Americans under General Clark approaching from the West and the British 8th Army commanded by Montgomery, pushing forward from the East.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Operation Torch:
Operation Torch started on 8 November 1942, and finished on 11 November. In an attempt to pincer German and Italian forces, Allied forces (American and British Commonwealth), landed in Vichy-held French North Africa under the assumption that there would be little to no resistance. Nevertheless, Vichy French forces put up a strong and bloody resistance to Allied forces in Oran and Morocco, but not in Algiers, where a coup d'état by the French resistance on 8 November succeeded in neutralizing the French XIX Corps before the landing and arresting the Vichy commanders. Consequently, the landings met no practical opposition in Algiers, and the city was captured on the first day along with the entire Vichy African command. After three days of talks and threats, Generals Mark Clark and Dwight Eisenhower compelled the Vichy Admiral François Darlan (and General Alphonse Juin) to order the cessation of armed resistance in Oran and Morocco by French forces on 10–11 November with the proviso that Darlan would be head of a Free French administration. During Operation Torch, American, Vichy French and German navy vessels fought the Naval Battle of Casablanca, ending in a decisive American victory.
The Allied landings prompted the Axis occupation of Vichy France. In addition, the French fleet was captured at Toulon by the Italians, something which did them little good as the main portion of the fleet had been scuttled to prevent their use by the Axis. The Vichy army in North Africa joined the Allies.
Tunisian Campaign:
Following the Operation Torch landings, (from early November 1942), the Germans and Italians initiated a buildup of troops in Tunisia to fill the vacuum left by Vichy troops which had withdrawn. During this period of weakness, the Allies decided against a rapid advance into Tunisia while they wrestled with the Vichy authorities. Many of the Allied soldiers were tied up in garrison duties because of the uncertain status and intentions of the Vichy forces.
By mid-November, the Allies were able to advance into Tunisia but only in single division strength. By early December, the Eastern Task Force – which had been redesignated British First Army under Lieutenant-General Kenneth Anderson – was composed of British 78th Infantry Division, 6th Armoured Division, 1st Parachute Brigade, 6th Commando and elements of U.S. 1st Armored Division. But by this time, one German and five Italian divisions had been shipped from Europe and the remoteness of Allied airfields from the front line gave the Axis clear air superiority over the battlefield. The Allies were halted and pushed back having advanced eastwards to within 30 km (19 mi) of Tunis.
During the winter, there followed a period of stalemate during which time both sides continued to build up their forces. By the new year, the British First Army had one British, one U.S. and one French Corps (a second British Corps headquarters was activated in April). In the second half of February, in eastern Tunisia, Rommel and von Arnim had some successes against the mainly inexperienced French and U.S. corps, most notably in routing the U.S II Corps commanded by Major-General Lloyd Fredendall at the Battle of the Kasserine Pass.
By the beginning of March, the Eighth Army – advancing westward along the North African coast – had reached the Tunisian border. Rommel and von Arnim found themselves in an Allied "two army" pincer. They were outflanked, outmanned and outgunned. The British Eighth Army bypassed the Axis defence on the Mareth Line in late March and First Army in central Tunisia launched their main offensive in mid-April to squeeze the Axis forces until their resistance in Africa collapsed. The Axis forces surrendered on 13 May 1943 yielding over 275,000 prisoners of war. This huge loss of experienced troops greatly reduced the military capacity of the Axis powers, although the largest percentage of Axis troops escaped Tunisia. This defeat in Africa led to all Italian colonies in Africa being captured.

Kate Hudson Gets Primal With Bear Grylls On ‘Running Wild’ | TODAY
Bear Grylls – the man who likes to eat scorpians and sleeps in trees above croc-infested swamps – was never going to just stroll through the front door for his interview on This Morning.
That’s far too regular, and not very Mission Survive.
First, he beached a rib on the Southbank with the help of the marines, and next he scaled the ITV studios with just a rope and not a single health and safety officer in sight.
Brave? Or stupid?
Either way it made for a spectacular entrance as once he’d climbed as far as the window, he took an almighty swing and flew feet first through the pane of glass.
Eamonn Holmes was left cowering in (fake) terror.
It was all in aid of the survivalist promoting his new show Mission Survive, where he takes eight famous faces and plonks them in the most hostile environment he could think of to test out whether they’d be most likely to live or die.
The celebs, including Loose Women’s Jamelia, Max George from The Wanted and Silent Witness’ Emilia Fox will have to abseil down ferocious waterfalls, cross rapids, and eat rats as they make their way through the jungle and hope to survive.
The one that gets voted off every few days is basically the one Bear Grylls reckons would have died.
Grylls said: ‘There’s no blueprint for a hero. I’m searching for the ultimate survivor. These guys are all rookies, never done anything, it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.
‘We started off with the eight of them and by the end only three. Then out of the three I pick who I think would survive.
‘After each few days I restricted their equipment and things got harder and harder.’
But he says the winner most likely isn’t who you’d immediately expect.
‘A survivor’s arsenal is more than just muscles. There’s positivity, resourcefulness, humility, kindness. Don’t judge a book by its cover.’
Bear Grylls’ Mission Survive starts on Friday February 20 on ITV.

Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls Mondays on NBC (9-10 p.m. ET); Series Premiere: July 8 "Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls" is a larger-than-life adventure reality competition series hosted by world-renowned survivalist Bear Grylls. Grylls leads this non-stop extreme survival journey that tests 10 teams of two beyond their wildest imaginations as they venture into the unforgiving and dramatic landscape of New Zealand's South Island. Their mission is threefold: survive the wild, journey as a group and avoid elimination. Each week, Bear will send home another team. In the end, only one duo will remain — the team that he believes has shown the most heart, courage, initiative and resolve in their quest to "get out alive" and claim a life-changing grand prize of $500,000. From dense forests and sheer mountain drop-offs, to freezing cold rivers and unforgiving glacier crevasses, the landscapes tackled will be harsh, remote and physically and emotionally draining. Having to navigate the worst that the wild can throw at them every step of the way, the contestants will be battling to survive like never before. Every team is assigned a task to take charge of throughout each leg of the journey -- including "food," "fire" "shelter" and "obstacles." This is not a race, but is a life-changing adventure to reveal the raw survival spirit needed to "get out alive." All along the way, Bear, the ultimate adventure survival expert, will be watching, either from vantage points or while traveling with the group. He is looking for that survival spirit, resourceful skill and heart-led determination that he knows the wild demands. If the situation requires, Bear will step in, but all the time, the duos must work together to overcome the cold, fatigue and hardships. And at the end of each leg of the journey, there are difficult and emotional decisions to be made by Bear as he chooses who should leave the expedition. As the stakes get higher, the obstacles become more unyielding. As civilization gets closer, the journeys get harder, until ultimately only one duo remains. That team will have endured and survived the ultimate test of character and fortitude — walking away with the grand prize, along with the scars and pride that they proved themselves capable to "Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls." This series marks the first time international television star Grylls will debut on network television. "Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls" is co-produced by Bear Grylls Ventures and Ben Silverman's multimedia studio, Electus. Grylls, Silverman, Chris Grant, Laura Caraccioli and Doug McCallie serve as executive producers. Please visit the official show site at http://www.nbc.com/get-out-alive/

Every team is assigned a task to take charge of throughout each leg of the journey -- including "food," "fire" "shelter" and "obstacles." In recent months there have been serious political and security developments in North African Arab countries. Libya, Tunisia and Algeria have all witnessed sharp rise in terrorist acts. While democratic transformation is slow to emerge the political confusion is causing alarm among the people and the leaders alike. What went wrong in those countries? How could ISIS and other extremist and violent groups spread at will across the international borders? And what future is there for real democratic transformation that could contain the threat of extremism violence and sectarianism?

Britain, France to Sign Agreement on Immigrant Crisis
France and England are preparing an agreement to strengthen security and ease the flood of immigrants to Britain in Calais, France.
The port city has dealt with immigrants this summer, largely from North Africa and the Middle East, attempting to get to Britain by stowing away on trucks loaded onto boats, and through the Eurotunnel under the English Channel. It remains unknown how many have reached their destination.
British Home Secretary Theresa May will travel to Calais Thursday to sign the agreement with French Interior Minister Bernard Cazaneuve.

On this Viedo is a list of a few of the estimated three thousand African tribes. On this African tribe list we have included some of the largest, most interesting, and best known tribal groups. There is a brief description of each tribe. If a name is highlighted you may
This tribe can be found on the horn of Africa in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia. They traditionally have been organized into separate kingdoms, each ruled by its own Sultan. They are pastoralists.
Amhara
The Amahara are Ethiopia's dominant ethnic group. They are mainly found in the central highland plateau of Ethiopia.
Anlo-Ewe
These people can be found in the Republic of Ghana. Before Europeans began their colonization of Africa the Ashanti developed an influential empire in West Africa.
Ashanti
These people of Africa also go by the name Asante. They are found mostly in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Before the colonization of Africa by the Europeans the Ashanti people created a large empire in West Africa.
Berber
The Berber are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa (west of the Nile) and have existed in Africa since at least 3000 BC. They are scattered across Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.
Dogon Tribe
These people live in the cliffs of Southeastern Mali south of the Niger near the city of Bandiagara. The Dogon are a major tourist attraction for Mali. This tribe is known for their mask dances, architecture, and wooden sculptures.
Dinka
These people who refer to themselves as Muonyjang are the largest ethnic tribe in South Sudan. They live in the Bahr el Ghazal region in the Nile basin, Jonglei, southern Kordufan and the Upper Nile region.
Fang
The Fang people live in forest clearings in the humid rainforests of Gabon. They are perhaps best known for the guardian figures which they attached to wooden boxes holding their ancestor’s bones.
Maasai
This ethnic group once occupied large areas of East Africa. They are known as great warriors and herders.
Pygmies
These people, known for their small size, live in central and western Africa. There are many pygmy tribes including the Bambuti, Bayaka, Batwa, and the Bagyeli.
San
An African tribe list would not be complete without including the San who are also referred to as Bushmen, Barwa, Sho, Kung, or Khwe. They live in the Kalahari desert and are the oldest inhabitants of South Africa. This group of people were traditionally hunters and gathers but in modern day have become farmers.
Tutsi
This tribe is also referred to as the Watutsi or Watutsi. In Rwanda and Burundi they are the 2nd largest caste. The largest caste is the Hutu and the smallest is the Twa.
Zulu
They are the largest ethnic group in South Africa, numbering about 10 million. Most of the Zulu live in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
We hope you found this African tribe list interesting. Check back periodically for more information about the people of Africa that we will be adding to this page.

Documentary, national Documentary, The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight,[4] it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia (where an endangered remnant population resides in Gir Forest National Park in India) while other types of lions have disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru.[5] The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a major population decline in its African range of 30–50% per two decades during the second half of the 20th century.[2] Lion populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Within Africa, the West African lion population is particularly endangered.
In the wild, males seldom live longer than 10 to 14 years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity.[6] In captivity they can live more than 20 years. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. Lions are apex and keystone predators, although they are also expert scavengers obtaining over 50 percent of their food by scavenging as opportunity allows. While lions do not typically hunt humans, some have. Sleeping mainly during the day, lions are active primarily at night (nocturnal), although sometimes at twilight (crepuscular).[7][8]
Highly distinctive, the male lion is easily recognised by its mane, and its face is one of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture. Depictions have existed from the Upper Paleolithic period, with carvings and paintings from the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves, through virtually all ancient and medieval cultures where they once occurred. It has been extensively depicted in sculptures, in paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature. Lions have been kept in menageries since the time of the Roman Empire, and have been a key species sought for exhibition in zoos over the world since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies.

Rearming Iraq: The New Arms Race in the Middle East
As violence escalates across the Middle East and North Africa, the United States remains the largest exporter of weapons to the region, and private US defense companies and contractors have opened local offices as the demand shows no sign of abating.
VICE News traveled to this year's International Defense Exhibition and Conference in the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi to examine the competition between arms manufacturers vying for a greater portion of the lucrative market.
From Abu Dhabi we traveled to Iraq, where US weapons have fallen into the hands of non-state actors such as the so-called Islamic State militant group, Kurdish Peshmerga, and militias aligned with the Iraqi government. Rather than block sales, the US government and others actively promote them — ensuring there will be enough arms to fuel the region's wars and revolts for years to come.

WWII veteran's search for old war friends goes viral
A World War II veteran's attempt to reconnect with some old war buddies has gone viral.
A Bonaire World War II veteran is trying to connect with some of the people he served with in Italy and North Africa in 1942 and 1943.
The Houston County-native has received hundreds of messages from the relatives of many of those men.
Former Private First Class Rifleman, John Knowles, did not used to be social media savvy. Now, his inbox is flooded with messages from people all over the country.
It started with a search for some of the people he served with in World War II, over 70 years ago.
"I just got to thinking about them," Knowles says. "I think about them a lot."
Knowles, who is now 91, says he has tried for years to look them up but did not know many of their real names.
"We knew each other by a last name or nickname," he says. "My assistant gunner, all I can remember is his name was Myers. I always wondered what happened to him. "
At this day in age, when memories are displayed on phones instead of frames, his daughter, Jana Hamrick, had an idea.
"I thought we could try this, and maybe it will get a couple of hundred shares," she says.
She made a sign that reads: Looking for members of U.S. Army Infantry WWII. North Africa and Italy. 24th Infantry Division 135th Regiment, 3rd Battalion I-Company.
She posted a photo of her father holding the sign and put it on Facebook.
In just one week, that sign was shared over 200, 000 times.
"It's just heartwarming to me to see him read every one of these messages," Hamrick says.
"It's a pleasure to hear from them," Knowles adds. "They knew some of the boys that I was with."
Knowles has a lot of keepsakes from his service, including the Purple Heart he received after getting frostbite twice.
However, they do not replace the camaraderie that came from combat.
"We protected each other," he says, "Just like brothers."
Knowles says he had to lose too many friends in the War. So he wants to find any part of that brotherhood that might still be here.
"Really don't know what I'd say," he smiles. "I'd be proud to meet any of them."
According to the Department of Veterans affairs, there are still about 21,500 World War II veterans in Georgia.

In recent months there have been serious political and security developments in North African Arab countries.

It is a two-part documentary film about the military campaigns in North Africa during World War 2.
This part covers the Western Desert Campaign. It begins with the destruction of the French fleet in Oran in June 1940 and concludes with General Montgomery’s bitter battle for El Alamein in 1942.
Battle of North Africa | PART 1 | WW2 Documentary on the North African Campaign 1940-1942
About the North African Campaign:
During the Second World War, the North African Campaign took place in North Africa from 10 June 1940 to 13 May 1943. It included campaigns fought in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts (Western Desert Campaign, aka the Desert War) and in Morocco and Algeria (Operation Torch) and Tunisia (Tunisia Campaign).
The campaign was fought between the Allies and Axis powers, many of whom had colonial interests in Africa dating from the late 19th century. The United States entered the war in 1941 and began direct military assistance in North Africa on 11 May 1942.
Fighting in North Africa started with the Italian declaration of war on 10 June 1940. On 14 June, the British forces crossed the border from Egypt into Libya and captured the Italian Fort Capuzzo. This was followed by an Italian counteroffensive into Egypt and the capture of Sidi Barrani in September 1940 and then in December 1940 by a Commonwealth counteroffensive, Operation Compass. During Operation Compass, the Italian 10th Army was destroyed. Following the Italian failure, the German Afrika Korps - commanded by Erwin Rommel, aka the Desert Fox - was dispatched to North Africa during Operation Sonnenblume to reinforce Italian forces in order to prevent a complete Axis defeat. The Africa Korps contained some of Hitler's finest soldiers and newly designed battle tanks. In March 1941, Rommel attacked the Allies in Libya. By May 1941, they had been pushed back into Egypt and only Tobruk held out against Rommel.
A see-saw series of battles for control of Libya and parts of Egypt followed, reaching a climax in the Second Battle of El Alamein when British Commonwealth forces under the command of General Bernard Montgomery delivered a decisive defeat to the Axis forces and pushed them back to Tunisia. After the late 1942 Allied Operation Torch landings in North-West Africa, and subsequent battles against Vichy France forces (who then changed sides), the Allies finally encircled Axis forces in northern Tunisia and forced their surrender.
Operation Torch in November 1942 was a compromise operation that met the British objective of securing victory in North Africa while allowing American armed forces the opportunity to engage in the fight against Nazi Germany on a limited scale. In addition, as Josef Stalin had long been demanding a second front be opened to engage the Wehrmacht and relieve pressure on the Soviet armies.
Victory for the Allies in this campaign immediately led to the Allied invasion of Sycily (Italian Campaign), which culminated in the downfall of the fascist government in Italy and the elimination of a German ally.
About the Second Battle of El Alamein:
The Second Battle of El Alamein (23 October – 11 November 1942) took place near the Egyptian coastal city of El Alamein. With the Allies victorious, it marked a major turning point in the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War. It followed the First Battle of El Alamein, which had stalled the Axis advance into Egypt, after which, in August 1942, General Bernard Montgomery had taken command of the British Eighth Army, aka the Desert Rats. `Monty` took time to consolidate his forces and by October 1942 he had 230,000 men and 1400 tanks whereas Rommel had 80,000 men and 500 tanks. The Battle of El Alamein started on October 23rd 1942 with a massive bombardment of German lines by 800 big guns. This was followed by bombing by planes before the tanks were sent into battle. Rommel was forced to retreat under this devastating assault. This time he was not given the time to re-group his force as the Allies did not give him the time to do so. This victory turned the tide in the North African Campaign and ended the Axis threat to Egypt, the Suez Canal, and of gaining access to the Middle Eastern and Persian oil fields via North Africa. From a psychological perspective, Second El Alamein revived the morale of the Allies, being the first major offensive against the Axis since the start of the European war in 1939 in which the Western Allies had achieved a decisive victory.

Lion Documentary - Wild Lion In Africa _ Discovery Wild Documentary
The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae.
First broadcast on BBC One at 10am on 17/05/2015.
BBC The Big Question was in Oxford to debate the EU strategy on the North Africa refugee boats crises.
Nic Conner- The Bow Group's Social and Home Affairs Research Fellow: proposed that refugees must be rescued from the sea. Smugglers must be stopped. Boats must be destroyed. Refugees must be taken to a safe zone. At the safe zone those feeling war in places such as Syria can be granted asylum in the UK and economic migrants can apply for asylum there, instead in the UK.
Nic debated: Stephen Hale from Refugee Action.
Nic was joined in the debate by: Dawn Chatty, University of Oxford; Douglas Murray, Legend; Mark Reckless, UKIP.
