Argentina and Brazil to clash in Australia at MCG in June, Socceroos vie to join action

Two of the biggest names in world football, Argentina's Lionel Messi and Brazil's Neymar, will face each other at the MCG in June, the Victorian Government confirmed on Friday morning.

And Football Federation Australia chiefs are hoping that they will be able to secure a blockbuster for the Socceroos a few days later with a game against one of the footballing superpowers as a prelude to Ange Postecoglou's side leaving for the Confederations Cup in Russia later in June.

Victorian Sports Minister John Eren on Friday confirmed that the two powerhouses, who have won seven World Cups between them (Argentina two, Brazil five) will meet on a Friday night, June 9 in a blockbuster at the 100,000 capacity venue.

Australia will play Saudi Arabia in a World Cup qualifier in Adelaide the night before, on June 8th.

The Socceroos are due to kick off their Confederations Cup campaign with a first match on June 19 in Sochi, Russia, against world champions Germany.

Postecoglou has stated that he wants a game between the Saudi clash and the Germany fixture.

It had seemed most likely that would take place in Europe, but FFA is hoping that it can secure one of the South Americans as a farewell game at the MCG for Postecoglou's men.

Sources suggested that their preference was for Argentina, as they believe the Albicelestes style resembles that of Chile, another of the Socceroos opponents in the Confederations Cup. But it is understood that Brazil is more likely to strike a deal to play if the game does go ahead on such a tight timetable.

FFA was tight-lipped about the mounting speculation of a game involving Australia following the announcement of the Brazil v Argentina match.

Argentina's Barcelona forward Messi is widely regarded, along with Portugal's Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, as the best player in the world.

Neymar, his Barcelona teammate, is regarded as the heir apparent to the two older men.

The two nations have many other top line players, with forwards like Juventus Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina), Paulo Dybala of Juvents (also Argentina) and Liverpool's  Phillipe Coutinho (Brazil)  on their roster, along with defenders such as  Barcelona's Javier Mascherano and Chelsea's David Luiz, the former of Argentina, the latter of Brazil.
