STORYLINE:
A popular politician and former party head was named Taiwan's next prime minister on Thursday in an appointment the ruling party hopes can help it regain public support ahead of the 2008 presidential election.
Su Tseng-chang, former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), will replace Frank Hsieh to head the Cabinet as the island's number three leader, President Chen Shui-bian announced.
"The tough task left by Premier Hsieh will be taken over by former Chairman Su Tseng-chang," Chen said.
Su resigned last month as the DPP chairman to take responsibility for its poor performance in municipal elections.
The party lost in the polls to the opposition Nationalist Party amid a series of corruption scandals that tarnished the DPP's image.
But Su has won widespread plaudits for his indefatigable efforts on behalf of DPP candidates during the campaign, and is viewed by many as the ruling party's most likely presidential candidate after Chen serves out his term in 2008.
Su said he will assume the difficult job.
"Let us work together to make Taiwan a better place, make our nation, people and society better," he said.
Su faces the crucial job of reinvigorating Taiwan's economy, undermined by an uncertain transition from high-tech manufacturing to the provision of sophisticated services.
58-year-old Su will be the fifth prime minister since Chen was elected in 2000.

STORYLINE:
Former ruling party chairman Su Tseng-chang was sworn in on Wednesday as Taiwan's premier along with a new Cabinet. The change is hoped will revive the Democratic Progressive Party's flagging fortunes amid a stalled economy and rising tensions with rival China.
President Chen Shui-bian selected Su for the island's third most senior leadership post last week after the resignation of Frank Hsieh.
Hsieh said he was leaving over disagreements with Chen's hardline policy toward China, from which Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
In a hard-hitting speech on January 1, Chen had warned local business people of significant risks in doing business in China, and called for "more active management" of the island's growing investment in the mainland. The speech sparked an outcry from Taiwanese business leaders.
Su referred to Chen's speech during his acceptance address on Wednesday.
"We hope to realise many of the President's hopes and expectations, especially those he mentioned in his New Year speech," Su said, without providing details about what he planned to do.
Su's Cabinet team is a mixture of old and new.
He selected Tsai Ing-wen as vice premier. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker is a former head of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) - the body in charge of relations with China.
Tsai, a legal expert by training, can be expected to fill in some major knowledge gaps for Su, who has keen political skills but little experience in international affairs or China policies.
MAC Chairman Joseph Wu and Defence Minister Lee Jye are staying in place.
For his economic team, Su recruited top managers from state-run enterprises. Bank of Taiwan Chairman Joseph Lyu is taking over the Finance Ministry, while utility Taiwan Power Co. Chairman Morgan Hwang becomes economics minister.
Chen's deputy chief-of-staff James Huang is the new foreign minister. The Foreign Ministry is less important than many other posts on the island because Taiwan only has 25 diplomatic allies - mostly small or impoverished nations in Africa, Latin America and the Pacific.
Su is the fifth premier since Chen was elected in 2000, and has emerged as a front-runner for the 2008 presidential elections. The constitution bars Chen from seeking a third term.

STORYLINE:
A popular politician and former party head was named Taiwan's next prime minister on Thursday in an appointment the ruling party hopes can help it regain public support ahead of the 2008 presidential election.
Su Tseng-chang, former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), will replace Frank Hsieh to head the Cabinet as the island's number three leader, President Chen Shui-bian announced.
"The tough task left by Premier Hsieh will be taken over by former Chairman Su Tseng-chang," Chen said.
Su resigned last month as the DPP chairman to take responsibility for its poor performance in municipal elections.
The party lost in the polls to the opposition Nationalist Party amid a series of corruption scandals that tarnished the DPP's image.
But Su has won widespread plaudits for his indefatigable efforts on behalf of DPP candidates during the campaign, and is viewed by many as the ruling party's most likely presidential candidate after Chen serves out his term in 2008.
Su said he will assume the difficult job.
"Let us work together to make Taiwan a better place, make our nation, people and society better," he said.
Su faces the crucial job of reinvigorating Taiwan's economy, undermined by an uncertain transition from high-tech manufacturing to the provision of sophisticated services.
58-year-old Su will be the fifth prime minister since Chen was elected in 2000.

STORYLINE:
Former ruling party chairman Su Tseng-chang was sworn in on Wednesday as Taiwan's premier along with a new Cabinet. The change is hoped will revive the Democratic Progressive Party's flagging fortunes amid a stalled economy and rising tensions with rival China.
President Chen Shui-bian selected Su for the island's third most senior leadership post last week after the resignation of Frank Hsieh.
Hsieh said he was leaving over disagreements with Chen's hardline policy toward China, from which Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
In a hard-hitting speech on January 1, Chen had warned local business people of significant risks in doing business in China, and called for "more active management" of the island's growing investment in the mainland. The speech sparked an outcry from Taiwanese business leaders.
Su referred to Chen's speech during his acceptance address on Wednesday.
"We hope to realise many of the President's hopes and expectations, especially those he mentioned in his New Year speech," Su said, without providing details about what he planned to do.
Su's Cabinet team is a mixture of old and new.
He selected Tsai Ing-wen as vice premier. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker is a former head of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) - the body in charge of relations with China.
Tsai, a legal expert by training, can be expected to fill in some major knowledge gaps for Su, who has keen political skills but little experience in international affairs or China policies.
MAC Chairman Joseph Wu and Defence Minister Lee Jye are staying in place.
For his economic team, Su recruited top managers from state-run enterprises. Bank of Taiwan Chairman Joseph Lyu is taking over the Finance Ministry, while utility Taiwan Power Co. Chairman Morgan Hwang becomes economics minister.
Chen's deputy chief-of-staff James Huang is the new foreign minister. The Foreign Ministry is less important than many other posts on the island because Taiwan only has 25 diplomatic allies - mostly small or impoverished nations in Africa, Latin America and the Pacific.
Su is the fifth premier since Chen was elected in 2000, and has emerged as a front-runner for the 2008 presidential elections. The constitution bars Chen from seeking a third term.
