This Delhi Flyover's Gap Has Literally Left Commuters In A Split

The Public Works Department said on Wednesday that a nine-inch gap in the Lajpat Nagar flyover in New Delhi would temporarily be bridged using steel plates. According to the Indian Express, this comes a day after the PWD Minister, Satyender Jain, claimed that he was unaware of the gap in the flyover's expansion joints.

Nearly nine inches wide, the gap has raised concerns over the safety of motorists plying on the flyover as it gives a clear view of the traffic running under it. However, vehicles are still running on the flyover.

"The gap is caused by contraction during winter. It will be bridged using steel plates. The flyover is old and its joints will need to be replaced with modular joints so that such contraction does not occur in the future. The flyover is structurally sound," said PWD engineer-in-chief, Sarvagya Srivastava.

"The work of welding steel plates to bridge the gap on Lajpat Nagar flyover will be undertaken immediately and will be completed in ten days," said PWD Secretary, Ashwani Kumar.
