@helenlewis good thread. Becoming a dad made me explicitly feminist. Realised how easy my life cld revert to norm. Imposs for my partner.

It's also why progress on maternity rights/childcare is so slow. The world is propped up by a huge amount of unpaid labour.

That's history: women tethered to nursing babies and men protecting them. No wonder our gender roles evolved as they did.

Privately, I call how I used to think as "Twentysomething Feminism", It's great, and necessary, but I didn't intuitively get the economics.

In my 20s, representation - and stuff like harassment - mattered much more to me, because they were what I and my friends faced.

Until I reached my 30s, I really didn't get that female biology was the root of gendered oppression. (And I say that as a childless woman.)

There are female mice, female bats, female deer (doe!) but humans are the only species that has men and women.

There are some oppressions that women face due to their perceived or actual reproductive capacity. There are others based on gender.

Had a lot of @s from people who don't know/don't distinguish between gender and sex. For reference, I believe the two are different.
