Fairwear Sweat Free Carols in Brunswick Street – 16 December

Numbers were down quite a bit compared with previous years in the CBD, for example the very effective sweat-free label search by Santa’s elves in David Jones in 2001 (see report here – scroll towards bottom of page), but the banner and the unexpected words to familiar tunes had their effect on shoppers – many took leaflets and the new wallet card of no-sweat shops, and some stopped to listen and even join in.

On the ninth day of shopping, my true love bought for me,
sexual harassment, cancer-causing fumes,
twelve-hour days, six cents an hour,
RAM-PANT COR-PORATE GREED!
Pre-sweated pants, slave labour shoes, toys made by kids,
all gifts made in sweatshops right here…
