A suburban pub in Perth's south has taken out the coveted Radio 6PR Pub of the Year for the second time since it opened its doors seven years ago.

The Whistling Kite in Secret Harbour beat seven other finalists including new British pub The Duke Bar & Bistro and the renovated Cottesloe Beach Hotel to be announced the winner by pub reviewer Karl Langdon on Thursday.

6PR Pub of the Year winner 2016

Karl Langdon announces the winner of the 2016 6PR pub of the year competition.

"I do urge all of our 6PR listeners to go and enjoy their food in the beer garden... I had the laksa, it was $29... I actually wanted to ask the chef what the recipe was it was that good," he said.

"One thing about this pub is its been in the finals numerous times, it's always consistent, it's got a nice modern decor, it's a stylish hotel, they certainly haven't held back when it comes to the expense."

The venue was one of the "magnificent top eight" selected by Langdon after visiting around 40 pubs in 2016.

The Inglewood Hotel, The Odin Tavern, The Currambine Bar & Bistro, The Cottesloe Beach Hotel, The Kewdale Tavern, The High Wycombe Tavern, The Duke and The Whistling Kite all fought for top spot after receiving 9.5 / 10 during Langdon's weekly reviews.

Whistling Kite assistant manager Kerri-Ann Taaffe said the pub couldn't believe it had won the title again, after taking it out around six years ago.

"When we were established in 2009, there wasn't really much around here in Secret Harbour but since then it's just growing... it's so fantastic for the community.

"We are a little bit of a destination pub but it's more the locals that come here and frequent us."

And as any good pub does, the venue has a favourite dish among the regulars.

"The lamb pizza for sure [is our signature dish], it's been on the menu since day one and I don't think it will ever leave," Ms Taaffee joked.

During the winner's announcement on Thursday, Langdon applauded the quality of the food and service at Perth's pubs.

"The search for Perth's best pub I think it's been going for 17 years at 6PR and I've got to say we've got some outstanding pubs," he said.

"I think for those that are in the developing suburbs of our city, they're very lucky, because what is happening is they're getting big modern venues with an orientation towards food."

Previous winner of 6PR's competition, The Gate Bar & Bistro, received an honourable mention from Langdon for having the best sports bar, while The Odin in Balcatta got the nod for offering the best value for money.

British pub, The Duke Bar & Bistro in Carramar, according to Langdon, was the best themed pub for its traditional English feel and the best wine list went to Cottesloe Beach Hotel.

The 6PR Radio Pub of the Year competition will return in 2017.Â
