Shocking car crash footage reminds drivers safety is key over Christmas period

A Coolup service station has released shocking images of a car crash on South Western Highway in a bid to prompt drivers to be safer while travelling on WA roads.

Placid Ark Roadhouse recorded the incident on its cameras in November, but only released the footage of the crash on Thursday.

A small hatchback appeared to attempt to pull into the Coolup station, and was struck by another car driving in the opposite direction.

Owner Greg McAleer posted the footage, and attached a message:

"We want to see ALL of our customers return, so PLEASE BE CAREFUL on the roads.

"It only takes a second or two of inattention to cause an accident!"

Both drivers were injured, but thankfully survived the collision.

The warning follows advice from St John's Ambulance, who said it was important for drivers to exercise common sense when driving on WA roads this holiday season.

St John Metropolitan Ambulance General Manager James Sherriff said both fatigue and alcohol were major concerns for drivers during December.

"Moderate your alcohol consumption even if you are not having to drive, and drink plenty of water. If you're going to be driving long distances, don't consume alcohol, take regular breaks and even stop for a nap or change drivers if you're getting sleepy. The ultimate aim is to get to your destination safely."
