Federal police have launched a nationwide appeal to find a toddler believed to have been taken by her father south of Brisbane.

Images have been released in a bid for public help to find 18-month-old Aubree Leigh Best and return her to her mother, Ashleigh Gibson.

The Australian Federal Police said the girl's mother was "desperate" to have her returned after she was recently taken from the Logan area.

The Federal Circuit Court of Australia issued a recovery order on December 15.

All federal and state police officers were authorised to recover the girl and the court took the uncommon step of allowing photos and details of the girl to be published, the AFP said.

Police believed the girl was with her father, 33-year-old Jordan Leigh Best, possibly still in the Logan area.

"Although Jordan does have family interstate, in South Australia, and may have travelled," the AFP said in a statement.

Mr Best has dark brown hair, brown eyes, a fair complexion and is about 175 centimetres tall and slightly built.

A court spokeswoman said Aubree had been missing since December 12, with a recovery order issued on December 15.

"Unfortunately initial inquiries have not led to the recovery of Aubree and public assistance is now sought in helping to locate her," she said in a statement.
