Peru (i/pəˈruː/; Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw [pɪɾʊw];Aymara: Piruw [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú ), is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an extremely biodiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.
Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies. Ideas of political autonomy later spread throughout Spanish America and Peru gained its independence, which was formally proclaimed in 1821. After the battle of Ayacucho, three years after proclamation, Peru ensured its independence. After achieving independence, the country remained in recession and kept a low military profile until an economic rise based on the extraction of raw and maritime materials struck the country, which ended shortly before the war of the Pacific. Subsequently, the country has undergone changes in government from oligarchic to democratic systems. Peru has gone through periods of political unrest and internal conflict as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The United Nations announced in 2013 that Peru has overtaken Colombia as the world’s top producer of coca, the raw plant material used to manufacture cocaine. For the past two decades, Colombia has been virtually synonymous with cocaine. Now that Peru has become the global epicenter of cocaine production, the Andean nation runs the risk of becoming the world’s next great narco state. The Peruvian government is trying to crack down on the problem by ramping up eradication of coca plants, and devoting military and police resources to interdiction efforts. Despite the response — and a hefty amount of foreign aid devoted to combatting cocaine production — Peruvian coke is being consumed in the nightclubs of Lima and in cities ...

The Republic of Peru. An emerging economy with a stable macroeconomic investment climate and ‘investment grade’ credit rating. A nation with an open door policy for investment. This week our host Mauricio Izquierdo takes us to Peru, where Chinese culture thrives among indigenous customs. Chinese immigrants have been able to retain many of their ancient traditions while fully integrating themselves into Peruvian culture. Approximately five million people with Chinese last names now live in Peru. Then it’s off to the Andes where we hear the sounds of ancient sikuri music now being kept alive by a group of artists that practice indigenous ways of life. Although the Spanish conquerors tried to wipe out all traces of indigenous music, it is alive and well today. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/cultura-latina-463146/

When it comes to street food I have high standards. I've been to countries like Korea and Thailand where street food reigns supreme. Arriving in Lima, Peru I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. Peruvian street food is some of the best in all of Latin American. Some of the Peruvian street food we tried includes Churros, Picarones, Turron, Tejas, Cremoladas, Alfajores and Chicha Morada to name just a few. When it comes to original Peruvian fast food / Peruvian junk food you absolutely have to try salchipapas or choripapas. Originating from the streets of Lima, Salchipapa literally means sausage (salchicha) and potato (papa). The dish is basically thinly sliced sausages and french fries with additional toppings such as cheese and egg and dipping sauces that include aji and ketchup. Choripapas is exactly the same aside from the fact chorizo is swapped for the salchicha. We had ours at Sanguchisimo in Miraflores, Lima, Peru. Peru has long faced a disparity in the quality of healthcare services provided by well-equipped urban clinics versus those in more rural areas. Healthcare worker Senaida Mariñas is responsible for the health post in Flor de Primavera, a remote community in the hills of Peru's San Martin region. Her dedication to her community, together with a performance improvement methodology developed by USAID's Quality Healthcare Program, has made Flor de Primavera a shining example of how quality service can lead to both increased demand for healthcare and better health outcomes.

This could leave tens of thousands of patients abandoned inside hospitals. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports from Lima.

Through global health clinical experiences like this one to Peru, they're taking what's learned in the classroom, applying it in a community different from their own and teaching members of that community how to promote health. As they are performing health assessments, and teaching health workers and families how to prevent and manage chronic illnesses with the resources they have, they embody the Villanova spirit with their love for learning and their commitment to working with other communities to improve their own health.

For over 4 decades Peru has fought the war on drugs with backing from the US. Ten of thousands of coca plants and hundres of tonnes of cocaine have been destroyed. Is Peru’s New Anti-drugs Policy Too Tough Even for Washington? Could the United States defund counter-narcotics efforts in Peru, the world’s top producer of cocaine? That’s the question after Peru’s single chamber congress voted unanimously 89-0 this week to resume shooting down the small aircraft suspected of ferrying up to 150 tonnes of the drug, roughly half of national production, out of the Andean country every year. President Ollanta Humala, a former army officer who prides himself on his no-nonsense approach to drug traffickers, is expected to sign the measure into law. Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco. As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a na...

During colonial times this city was the largest, most populated, finest and most cultivated city on the continent. In Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, magnificent ruins await the adventurous traveler. The most famous of all is Machu Picchu. Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city. In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Ma...

https://www.expedia.com/Lima.d178277.Destination-Travel-Guides Lima gives access to the mystical city of Machu Picchu in the Andes, Lake Titicaca in the highlands, the lush Amazon jungle and Peru’s coastal desert. But, before you go to see all of this, it’s worth exploring the capital first. Just like Peru’s landscapes, Lima is a city of contrasts: rich and poor, ancient and modern, practical and elegant, fascinating and entertaining. In Lima’s Historic Center is the Plaza de Armas, also known as the Plaza Mayor. This is where the Spanish explorer founded Lima and the Lima Cathedral, contains the tomb of Francisco Pizarro. Next door, the Government Palace is still the official seat of government today. Outside of the city center are many more visitor attractions. The Bajada de los Baños...

Live like a Local: Peru USTOA's Travel Together Series hosted by Kelley Ferro Lima has the beach, the cliffs, the history, the energy and the passion. I loved our stay in the neighborhoods of Miraflores & Barranco. The city is definitely an exciting place and it's only getting better and better.
Ein gebrochener Arm, ein gebrochenes Herz
Mitten im Höhenflug, ein Häufchen Elend
Dann diese Augen, Dein Blick
Bringt die Wende, bringt mir Glück
Hast mich getröstet, hast mich gepflegt
Bedingungslos, freier Eintritt in meine Seele
Schlafende Geister geweckt
Dummheit gedeckt
Neuen Mut in mich hineingelacht
Oh, nimm Dir, was ich brauch'
