South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked...

With a 60-year mine life, and a 2.4 million tonne per annum capacity, Tshipi will be among the four largest South African sources of manganese, an irreplaceable ingredient in the manufacture of steel. In 1867, the first diamond discovered in South Africa, the Eureka Diamond, was found near Hopetown on the Orange River. Two years later, a much larger diamond known as the Star of South Africa was found in the same area, causing a diamond rush. This was soon eclipsed by the diamond rush to mine diamonds directly from kimberlite at Kimberley in 1871, although alluvial diamonds continued to be found in the Orange. Today, several commercial diamond mines operate on the last stretch of the river, as well as the beaches around its mouth. Diamond mines also operate on the middle stretch of the river. All the big diamond mines of South Africa lie to the north of the Orange River. After the first accidental discovery had drawn attention to the occurrence of diamond in South Africa, the four impor...
“Visions of Gold” is a short color film on “Gold! The thread from which we weave our dreams! The key to stability!” Produced by South African film maker Emil Nofal in the mid-1960s, the film opens with rows of gold bars as the narrator Joe Stewardson explains how (in1 885) itinerant prospectors George Walker, along with George Harrison, stumbled on surface outcrops of gold-rich conglomerate on an old farm near the Witwatersrand basin —land that is now near the center of Johannesburg. (Both men quickly sold their claims for the equivalent of a few hundred dollars. Today, the gold fields in the region are worth billions.) From across the world, prospectors descended on South Africa in search of gold, as we see throngs of prospectors and opportunists starting at mark 02:45. Spurred on by visi...

The historic scarcity of work opportunities, resultant chronic high unemployment coupled with apartheid-era laws sparked an entrepreneurial spirit among many South Africans as a means of survival. Today, within townships such as Alexandra and Kliptown, many residents engage in what’s called the ‘informal economy.’ At the South African Institute of Race Relations, a team of researchers examine evolving trends such as the informal job market. Researcher Boitumelo Sethlatswe provides an in depth look at this crucial segment of life in South Africa that’s under attack as the government considers licensing legislation.

Data released by Experian on the country's Business Debt Index, shows 4 quarters of decline last year. The BDI declined to 0.20, from 0.35 in Quarter 3, which according to the authors of the index isn't good news. Angelo Coppola with the story.

When visiting South Africa the one absolute must item to try, unless you're vegan/vegetarian, is South African Braai. Similar to barbecue, but don't you dare call it that, it literally means 'grilled meat in Afrikaans. For fuel wood is used over gas and other forms of charcoal giving the meat an extra smokey flavor. Another feature that makes South African Braai unique is that most of the various kinds of meats are marinated prior to being grilled. The entire process, including the preparation, is very much a social affair. Be sure to try braai if you get the chance; however, remember not to call it barbecue because that's just a sauce ;) GEAR WE USE Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: http://amzn.to/1OchS7t Canon G7X: http://amzn.to/1YdjsYX Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: http://amzn.to/1Y79zeM Rode Video...
Ask a South African to name just one dish that evokes the sometimes quirky fusion of indigenous, colonial and immigrant cultures behind this nation’s famous "rainbow cuisine", and, surely, bunny chow would be there near the tip of her tongue. A spicy curry in a large portion of hollowed-out white loaf, this Durban specialty comprises a filling imported by Indian slaves and their descendants, served in an edible vessel made of an Afrikaans staple, the two happily joined together by necessity. A perfect combination of the exotic and the practical. ✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣✣ Subscribe Here Please: https://goo.gl/PKUjzh Thanks For Watching ღ

It stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River which is crossed along the N2 coastal highway over the Paul Sauer Bridge in the extreme western reach of the neighbouring Eastern Cape. “There are broken-down cars and bits of discarded furniture everywhere,” Simpson wrote in the article posted on the BBC website. “Beyond the wooden shacks lie ditches and pools of dirty, stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Two basic toilets serve the whole camp.” Then he paraphrased comments made to him by his guide, Ernst Roets, the deputy chief executive of the Afrikaans civil society organisation, AfriForum. “According to Roets there are 80 white squatter camps – many of them bigger than this – in the Pretoria area alone. Across South Africa as a whole he believes there could be as many as 400,000 poor whites in conditions like these.” In the television report on the story, which was aired on the BBC current affairs programme, The Editors, Simpson spoke of 200,000 whites. “One u...

Apartheid (lit. "aparthood") (pronounced [uh-pahrt-heyt, [uh-pahr-hahyt]) is an Afrikaans word for a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party governments, who were the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, of South Africa, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. Apartheid was developed after World War II by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate (revoked in 1966 via United Nations Resolution 2145), until it gained independence as Namibia in 1990. Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
