"I jumped out of bed and all I had was me undies on and I walked out the front and I seen the car smashed and I seen the bloke walking back to the car and I said, 'Oh, what are you doing, mate? You can't be leaving the scene,' " Mr McConnell told Nine News.

The fish and chip shop, owned by a family for about 40 years, had been badly damaged by the crash.

The driver allegedly ran from the scene, but Mr McConnell jumped in his purple car and gave chase.

"He just decided he'd shoot up the road so I said, 'Nah, it's not going on like that, mate,' " Mr McConnell said.

"I jumped in me car and I started chasing him up the road and the police were coming and I flashed them and sent them in the direction of him."

Police caught the 35-year-old Redcliffe man and charged him with one count of unlicensed driving.

He is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on January 31.

Mr McConnell said he did not consider himself a hero.

"Not really, it's just something you gotta do for the community, got to look after your mates and they look after you," he said.
