Perth's animal cruelty hot-spots: is your suburb on the list?

RSPCA WA has released a list of animal cruelty hot spots across Perth as it rolls out a new campaign to educate residents about responsible pet ownership.

And it seems the southern suburbs are the city's worst offenders.

Birds attacked on Maddington farm

RSPCA WA is calling for information about an animal cruelty case where number of chickens were killed on a hobby farm in Maddington. Warning vision may be distressing to some viewers.

The organisation said there had been 4765 total cruelty report call outs for WA since January this year, and the City of Armadale catchment has recorded almost 246 inspector call outs alone.

Baldivis made 99 cruelty reports over the course of the year, closely followed by Mandurah, Midland and Rockingham.

RSPCA WA community outreach coordinator Nat Foster said the list proved there needed to be more engagement with locals about how to best look after their animals.

"Some of the suburbs in the top 10 are probably in the top 10  for other community issues - such as crime - so it seems that there are deeper problems in those areas that are driving people to commit these offences," she said.

"We know from the nature of some calls we're getting at the moment that financial stress can be a huge contributing factor, which is why we host community action days in cruelty 'hot spots'."

The days offer pet food for families in financial need, free vet consultations, dog training advice and flea medication.

Following these new statistics, RSPCA WA has begun to hold more in animal cruelty hot spots in an attempt to educate local pet owners.

The latest example is 'the Chain Exchange' project, which encourages dog owners to swap their choke chain or prong collar for a humane flat collar.

"Many dog owners believe the choker-style collar is an effective training tool, and simply don't realise the physical and emotional damage they cause," Ms Foster said.

The next Community Action Day will be held at Minnawarra Park in Armadale this afternoon.
