Windsor is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest castle that has been continuously occupied. The towers and battlements create a spectacular skyline from any approach. When the Queen is in residence, the Royal Standard flies from the Round Tower. At all other times you will see the Union Flag.
The last non-tidal stretch of the river is truly "royal" as it flows from Windsor Castle to Hampton Court. The original settlement in Windsor was in Old Windsor. It was not until the 11th century after William the Conqueror's success at Hastings that the first wooden fortress was built. For hundreds of years the town existed primarily to house courtiers, the garrison and their families and visitors. The expansion of Windsor did not take place until Queen Victoria's reign. The river at Windsor is graced by hundreds of mute swans, all of which are owned by Her Majesty The Queen and the Vintners' and Dyers' Livery companies. Each July the cygnets are weighed, ringed, recorded, and allocated at an ancient ceremony called Swan Upping.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers. This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans.

Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire. The castle is notable for its long association with the English and later British royal family and also for its architecture. The original castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror. Since the time of Henry I, it has been used by succeeding monarchs and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe. The castle's lavish, early 19th-century State Apartments are architecturally significant, described by art historian Hugh Roberts as "a superb and unrivalled sequence of rooms widely regarded as the finest and most complete expression of later Georgian taste". The castle includes the 15th-century St George's Chapel, considered by historian John Martin Robinson to be "one of the supreme achievements of English Perpendicular Gothic" design. More than 500 people live and work in Windsor Castle.
Originally designed to protect Norman dominance around the outskirts of London, and to oversee a strategically important part of the River Thames, Windsor Castle was built as a motte and bailey, with three wards surrounding a central mound. Gradually replaced with stone fortifications, the castle withstood a prolonged siege during the First Barons' War at the start of the 13th century. Henry III built a luxurious royal palace within the castle during the middle of the century, and Edward III went further, rebuilding the palace to produce an even grander set of buildings in what would become "the most expensive secular building project of the entire Middle Ages in England". Edward's core design lasted through the Tudor period, during which Henry VIII and Elizabeth I made increasing use of the castle as a royal court and centre for diplomatic entertainment.

Castle
A castle (from Latin: castellum) is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for nobility; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms with many different features, although some, such as curtain walls and arrowslits, were commonplace.
A European innovation, castles originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire resulted in its territory being divided among individual lords and princes. These nobles built castles to control the area immediately surrounding them, and were both offensive and defensive structures; they provided a base from which raids could be launched as well as protection from enemies. Although their military origins are often emphasised in castle studies, the structures also served as centres of administration and symbols of power. Urban castles were used to control the local populace and important travel routes, and rural castles were often situated near features that were integral to life in the community, such as mills and fertile land.

The Queen's Palaces
The Queen's Palaces is a 2011 documentary in three parts written and presented by Fiona Bruce that tells the story of the Queen's three official residences, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse which are amongst the few working royal palaces in the world today.
Episode one: Buckingham Palace
Bruce charts the history of the palace from its days as a hunting forest for Henry VII and a mulberry garden of James I. Buckingham House was built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, and it was later purchased in 1761 by George III for his wife Charlotte and 14 of their 15 children were born there. George removed many of the ornate features but invested heavily in art from Europe. George IV wanted a grander building and with architect John Nash transformed the house into a palace, full of art and sculpture. By the time of his death, the project had overspent its budget by four times, and it was proposed to use it instead as a replacement parliament building. In 1837 Queen Victoria moved in and when she married Prince Albert they commissioned Edward Blore to move the Marble Arch and build a new wing across the front, which included a ball room and the now-famous balcony. On Albert's death in 1861 Victoria retired and rarely used the palace. On her death Edward VII remodeled many rooms and installed toilets. In 1913 the last major work was when George V had the front refaced in white Portland stone, and during World War II it received minor bomb damage.

From the bowels of the Castle to the heights of the battlements, Fiona encounters all manner of royal treasures - from the musket ball that killed a naval hero to table decorations in gold and silver and encrusted with jewels; from the triple-headed portrait of a king who lost his head to Queen Mary's Dolls' House with running taps, and a secret garden hidden in a drawer. The last non-tidal stretch of the river is truly "royal" as it flows from Windsor Castle to Hampton Court. The original settlement in Windsor was in Old Windsor. It was not until the 11th century after William the Conqueror's success at Hastings that the first wooden fortress was built. For hundreds of years the town existed primarily to house courtiers, the garrison and their families and visitors. The expansion of Windsor did not take place until Queen Victoria's reign. The river at Windsor is graced by hundreds of mute swans, all of which are owned by Her Majesty The Queen and the Vintners' and Dyers' Livery companies. Each July the cygnets are weighed, ringed, recorded, and allocated at an ancient ceremony called Swan Upping.

Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Windsor Castle survived the tumultuous period of the English Civil War, when it was used as a military headquarters for Parliamentary forces and a prison for Charles I. During the Restoration, Charles II rebuilt much of Windsor Castle with the help of architect Hugh May, creating a set of extravagant, Baroque interiors that are still admired. After a period of neglect during the 18th century, George III and George IV renovated and rebuilt Charles II's palace at colossal expense, producing the current design of the State Apartments, full of Rococo, Gothic and Baroque furnishings. Victoria made minor changes to the castle, which became the centre for royal entertainment for much of her reign. Windsor Castle was used as a refuge for the royal family during the Luftwaffe bombing campaigns of the Second World War, and survived a fire in 1992. It is a popular tourist attraction, a venue for hosting state visits, and the preferred weekend home of Elizabeth II.

Spread across 13 hectares, it is located 23 miles away from Heathrow airport and is one of the most popular historical destinations around London.
Home of 39 monarchs for almost 1000 years, it’s an official residence of Her Majesty The Queen, who spends most of her private weekends here.
Norman gate, the current visitor’s entrance, which will take you to the heart of the castle and to one of the 3 wards called the middle Ward. It comprises of beautiful motte garden and the Round Tower. A bailey formed around the motte or artificial hill in the centre of the ward. The motte is 50 feet high and is made from chalk originally.
The Upper Ward of Windsor Castle comprises a number of major buildings forming a central quadrangle. The State Apartments form the major part of the Upper Ward which has The White, Green and Crimson Drawing Rooms, The Queen's Presence Chamber, the Queen's Audience Chamber, Ball room and the King's Dining Room.
It also host the Queen Mary’s doll house- A masterpiece in miniature, that took three years to complete and involved 1,500 craftsmen & artists.
The lower ward consist of the St. George chapel. The Chapel is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in England. It’s built in gothic architecture and 10 monarchs are buried here. Lower ward is also the hosting place of the colorful & famous Change of Guard ceremony.
The Exit from the castle is from King Henry the 8th Gate which will take you straight to the Windsor Royal Shopping Center. Do not miss to check out the souvenir shops here, as they form a great memory of the glorious history, the royal experience and her majesty the queen.
