Caulfield Cup Day 2016: Last-minute betting guide, tips and horses to watch

SADDLE UP: LOCAL mares Jameka and Real Love stand in the way of the internationals taking home the first major of the spring carnival.

The $3 million Caulfield Cup is the headline race on a terrific 10-race card that includes the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint and Tristarc Stakes, and three Group 3 races.

Last week punters went home happy with seven out of 10 favourites getting up, but Saturday promises to be a trickier day.

If you’re heading out to Caulfield and looking for a few tips, we have you covered in SuperRacing’s Saddle Up punting guide.

WEATHER

Warm and windy with a mostly sunny top temperature of 24 degrees. The Caulfield rail will be out 6m, which could be an advantage to frontrunners, but watch what impact the wind is having.

Betting do's and don'ts0:52

Plenty of etiquette to bear in mind when it comes to the races, he's a brief rundown.

Betting do's and don'ts

BEST BET

TYCOON TARA (Race 7, No. 3): The money has come for this rejuvenated mare who has notched three group win in four starts since transferring to Peter and Paul Snowden’s Sydney stables. Last start she controlled the race from start to finish and this race looks like unfolding the same way.

media_cameraTycoon Tara was too good for her rivals at Rosehill last start.

NEXT BEST

VOODOO LAD (Race 10, No. 12): Ultra consistent. Has never been out of the top three in 16 career starts and that should not be changing on Saturday. The Darren Weir-trained gelding was narrowly beaten at Group 1 level last start and before that was too smart for Keen Array, which won comfortably at Wednesday’s Caulfield meeting. The form is strong.

$100 BETTING STRATEGY

Race 7, No. 3: TYCOON TARA ($2.70) — $40 win

Race 8, No. 4: SCOTTISH ($7.50) — $20 e/w

Race 10, No. 12: VOODOO LAD ($3.50) — $20 win

QUADDIE

Race 7: Nos. 2 and 6

Race 8: Nos. 4, 5, 8 and 11

Race 9: Nos. 4 and 5

Race 10: Nos. 4, 6, 10 and 12

= $64 for $1 unit

VALUE RUNNERS

VEZALAY (Race 6, No. 6) — $7: Won this race last year, albeit at the fifth run of her campaign. That was her last win but she’s been up against some top mares. This time she’s first-up and her record fresh is solid. She finished second in a jumpout to Star Turn, who destroyed the opposition last Saturday.

VANBRUGH (Race 6, No. 4) — $5: Finished alongside with It’s Somewhat when they clashed last month and meets the favourite 4.5kg better and is double the price.

WILD RAIN (Race 9, No. 5) — $5.50: Underrated mare in career-best form. Finished third ahead of the world's best sprinter Chautauqua in the Moir Stakes two weeks ago. Will go close to knockig off the hotpot favourite.

How to place a bet1:12

Heading to Spring Carnival and not sure on how to have a punt? Follow our simple step-by-step guide right here.

How to place a bet

JUMP ON/JUMP OFF

Who the early punters are backing on ...

ACATOUR (Race 2, No. 7): Stack of money for the Snowden galloper (see the big bets below), who is now into $2.50 after opening $4. Impressive last-start winner in Sydney and is highly rated by the Snowden team.

NIKITAS (Race 2, No. 4): He’s been racing against the top grade and after getting out to $11, has been

CHLOE IN PARIS (Race 3, No. 8): Even race but solid support for the 6-year-old mare, who will be ridden by Damien Oliver. Was outclassed in the Group 1 Moir Stakes. Backed from $13 into $8.50.

ELEONORA (Race 4, No. 5): Another Damien Oliver mount well supported. Into $4.80 after opening $6.

VOODOO LAD (Race 10, No. 12): The bookies will be reeling if the gelding gets up in the last. $5 into $3.50 and wouldn’t surprise if he’s even shorter by race time.

... and who they’re steering clear of:

TIAMO GRACE (Race 4, No. 7): Big step up for the three-year-old filly and she’s out to $11.

FIRST SEAL (Race 7, No. 1): No love for this one-time glamour mare. Big drift $4.80 out to $6.50.

HORSES TO WATCH

LANKAN RUPEE (Race 9, No. 1): Five-time Group 1 winner and former Horse of the Year on the comeback trail. Has to lug 61kg which will be extremely tough.

HELLBENT (Race 9, No. 5): In the same race as Lankan Rupee and backed as if unbeatable. This is his biggest test to date.

SEABURGE and GOOD STANDING (Race 5, No. 1 and No. 2) Derby favouritism on the line.

media_cameraCan Lankan Rupee return to his former glory? Picture: Michael Klein

ON NOTICE

TOM MELBOURNE (Race 6, No. 6): Was on a Caulfield Cup path before he was twice beaten as favourite and again as second favourite. The odds suggest the punters have given up on him. His performance will determine whether he pushes on to the Flemington carnival or is aimed at a country cup.

FINAL CHANCE

FIRST SEAL (Race 7, No. 1): First Seal beat Winx in the first five races in which they clashed. That’s right! It’s amazing how much has changed since March 15, 2014. A rare hoof injury halted First Seal’s career as the same time Winx’s started to take off. She’s struggled to recapture the form that helped her win a Group 1 (over Winx in the 2014 Flight Stakes) and three Group 2s. She was pretty soft first-up when well beaten by Tycoon Tara and needs to show massive improvement from that effort.

media_cameraThe ‘car park’ is sure to be rocking late in the day, especially if the punters have managed to find a few winners.

GET OUT STAKES (LAST RACE)

A big field but with a long tail. Voodoo Lad and Takedown are tight in the market, but if you want to take them on there’s plenty of value with 13 of the 17 runners in double figures.

AROUND THE COUNTRY

SYDNEY (RANDWICK)

Best bet: SPIETH (Race 9, No. 17): Up and coming sprinter. His last win was at Flemington and he’ll be back there for the carnival if her salutes here.

Value bet: EL DIVINO (Race 7, No. 6): Winx’s half brother was outclassed by Astern and Star Turn, then probably didn’t see out the 1400m. This is big drop in grade.

PERTH (ASCOT)

Best bet: PERFECT REFLECTION (Race 7, No. 3): Returning from a spell and unbeaten in three starts at this track. Yet to win at 1400m but with the wily William Pike pulling the reins should be prominent at finish.
