This was a spontaneous video we had the idea for whilst on our trip to North Korea (DPRK) to surf and skateboard with the people. We went to break down barriers that separate us from the human beings that we all are. We did not plan to make a music video beforehand. It was not staged or in any way funded by the DPRK government. Our intent with this video is to show what we experienced as a true collaboration, with the hope that somehow it can lead to a positive change and be a voice for the people of North Korea. We made it with our new friends. We believe that what we experienced and the making of this video are positive signs that these barriers were at least to some extent, broken down during our time there. We are all making history together by pushing the boundaries of what's possible and what's never been done before, from the music video to the promotion of unification in the midst of division.

"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

The NO!...NO'S! of our two guides are an everyday occurrence. I don't work with hidden movie or photo cameras, my shooting activity is open but my focus I keep obscured by not looking through the finder, shooting from the hip.
Since the guides don't allow us to stop on the highway or in cities without prior permission from the central travel office in Pyongyang, I take photos or movie from all types of angles. My "luck" is that roads and highways are often in poor condition and we roll by comfortably at 40-60 km, perfect to take snapshots.
It pays off to walk behind a Chinese. This invaluable lesson I learned in DPRK. Chinese in groups are a friendly bunch, they laugh, are loud, say hello and often ask to make a photo with you. They care less about restrictions, take pictures we are told not to make and walk around more freely. Moving behind a Chinese or a Chinese group of travelers is like moving your boat behind an icebreaker in the Arctic Zone. Chinese seem to be "naturally" hearing impaired, easy-going and not responsive to every whim of their guides.
As it always happened day after day, our two "permanent" guides discussed every move of us over lunch and dinner and reported daily to the main travel office in Pyongyang to get instruction. After arrival in Pyongyang one evening, they must have discussed my filming from Wonsan to the Capital with their superior because next day all shooting even from the car window was forbidden... .
For the Chinese leadership governments, dictatorships come and go. Their goal is to penetrate systems and political structures by means of production, exert influence and strengthen ties at all levels through market domination.
North Korea will become a satellite of China. This is not what the KIM'S want. But there is no alternative to the regime's survival of the KIM dynasty The Chinese want to make sure that their North Korean lips will have Chinese make-up on. China, it seems, pays great attention that North Korean and Chinese economies will be close-knit. Beauty products are a forerunner of this strategy, the lipstick a symbol of it.
The end will come but in endless and invisible small steps, unnoticeable and the Kim regime will come under Chinese patronage. China will help but at a price. North Korea is in China's orbit. China is already now buttering up the North Korean consumer -- not South Korea and the West. They kept the KIM JONG IL regime afloat and secured KIM JONG UN's succession.
My impression is that the Chinese don't want to topple the KIM dynasty and dictatorship for cynical and pragmatic reasons. They may fear that, without the Kim's ruthless grip on power, it could provoke a serious revolt and North Korea could rush inadvertently towards reunification with South Korea. A reunited Korea under Seoul leadership and allied to the US, highly developed, democratic and western oriented, would make the "Chinese Teeth feel very cold" indeed.

Computer Science in the DPRK
A view into technology on the other side of the world
This talk will reflect on teaching Computer Science in Pyongyang over the last two years, and look at how technology has been integrated into civilian life in the DPRK. Remaining an extremely isolated country, many people would be surprised to hear that cellphones have become commonplace within the capitol, let alone that the country invests in custom hardware and software. I'll talk through the current state of desktop and mobile technology in pyongyang, and what's changing.
From redstar OS, a custom redhat-derived linux desktop and server environment, to the arirang cellphone and tablet, technology in the DPRK is different from what you are likely to see anywhere else in the world. Most systems are not widely available, and exist as much in rumor as reality. Partially from language barrier, and partially due to restrictive import, export, and communication policies, there are large gaps and large amounts of misinformation around most aspects of the country.
I've spent the last two falls teaching Computer Science, specifically Operating Systems and Databases, to undergraduates at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. In the course of life in Pyongyang, I've been able to observe the growing prevalence of mobile technology, and get a firsthand look at the state of consumer technology in the country.
In this talk I'll provide a demonstration of redstar 3.0, the current generation of the desktop operating system, and offer the caveat that it is seldom used in practice. I will also bring a samjiyong android tablet, to demonstrate the state of mobile technology. I'll focus the talk on discussing what international technology is and isn't applicable to the country, and the opportunities going forwards.

listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

Computer Science in the DPRK A view into technology on the other side of the world This talk will reflect on teaching Computer Science in Pyongyang over the last two years, and look at how technology has been integrated into civilian life in the DPRK. Remaining an extremely isolated country, many people would be surprised to hear that cellphones have become commonplace within the capitol, let alone that the country invests in custom hardware and software. I'll talk through the current state of desktop and mobile technology in pyongyang, and what's changing. From redstar OS, a custom redhat-derived linux desktop and server environment, to the arirang cellphone and tablet, technology in the DPRK is different from what you are likely to see anywhere else in the world. Most systems are not widely available, and exist as much in rumor as reality. Partially from language barrier, and partially due to restrictive import, export, and communication policies, there are large gaps and large amounts of misinformation around most aspects of the country. I've spent the last two falls teaching Computer Science, specifically Operating Systems and Databases, to undergraduates at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. In the course of life in Pyongyang, I've been able to observe the growing prevalence of mobile technology, and get a firsthand look at the state of consumer technology in the country. In this talk I'll provide a demonstration of redstar 3.0, the current generation of the desktop operating system, and offer the caveat that it is seldom used in practice. I will also bring a samjiyong android tablet, to demonstrate the state of mobile technology. The NO!...NO'S! of our two guides are an everyday occurrence. I don't work with hidden movie or photo cameras, my shooting activity is open but my focus I keep obscured by not looking through the finder, shooting from the hip. Since the guides don't allow us to stop on the highway or in cities without prior permission from the central travel office in Pyongyang, I take photos or movie from all types of angles. My "luck" is that roads and highways are often in poor condition and we roll by comfortably at 40-60 km, perfect to take snapshots. It pays off to walk behind a Chinese. This invaluable lesson I learned in DPRK. Chinese in groups are a friendly bunch, they laugh, are loud, say hello and often ask to make a photo with you. They care less about restrictions, take pictures we are told...

The NO!...NO'S! of our two guides are an everyday occurrence. I don't work with hidden movie or photo cameras, my shooting activity is open but my focus I keep obscured by not looking through the finder, shooting from the hip.
Since the guides don't allow us to stop on the highway or in cities without prior permission from the central travel office in Pyongyang, I take photos or movie from all types of angles. My "luck" is that roads and highways are often in poor condition and we roll by comfortably at 40-60 km, perfect to take snapshots.
It pays off to walk behind a Chinese. This invaluable lesson I learned in DPRK. Chinese in groups are a friendly bunch, they laugh, are loud, say hello and often ask to make a photo with you. They care less about restrictions, take pictures we are told not to make and walk around more freely. Moving behind a Chinese or a Chinese group of travelers is like moving your boat behind an icebreaker in the Arctic Zone. Chinese seem to be "naturally" hearing impaired, easy-going and not responsive to every whim of their guides.
As it always happened day after day, our two "permanent" guides discussed every move of us over lunch and dinner and reported daily to the main travel office in Pyongyang to get instruction. After arrival in Pyongyang one evening, they must have discussed my filming from Wonsan to the Capital with their superior because next day all shooting even from the car window was forbidden... .
For the Chinese leadership governments, dictatorships come and go. Their goal is to penetrate systems and political structures by means of production, exert influence and strengthen ties at all levels through market domination.
North Korea will become a satellite of China. This is not what the KIM'S want. But there is no alternative to the regime's survival of the KIM dynasty The Chinese want to make sure that their North Korean lips will have Chinese make-up on. China, it seems, pays great attention that North Korean and Chinese economies will be close-knit. Beauty products are a forerunner of this strategy, the lipstick a symbol of it.
The end will come but in endless and invisible small steps, unnoticeable and the Kim regime will come under Chinese patronage. China will help but at a price. North Korea is in China's orbit. China is already now buttering up the North Korean consumer -- not South Korea and the West. They kept the KIM JONG IL regime afloat and secured KIM JONG UN's succession.
My impression is that the Chinese don't want to topple the KIM dynasty and dictatorship for cynical and pragmatic reasons. They may fear that, without the Kim's ruthless grip on power, it could provoke a serious revolt and North Korea could rush inadvertently towards reunification with South Korea. A reunited Korea under Seoul leadership and allied to the US, highly developed, democratic and western oriented, would make the "Chinese Teeth feel very cold" indeed.

The NO!...NO'S! of our two guides are an everyday occurrence. I don't work with hidden movie or photo cameras, my shooting activity is open but my focus I keep obscured by not looking through the finder, shooting from the hip.
Since the guides don't allow us to stop on the highway or in cities without prior permission from the central travel office in Pyongyang, I take photos or movie from all types of angles. My "luck" is that roads and highways are often in poor condition and we roll by comfortably at 40-60 km, perfect to take snapshots.
It pays off to walk behind a Chinese. This invaluable lesson I learned in DPRK. Chinese in groups are a friendly bunch, they laugh, are loud, say hello and often ask to make a photo with you. They care less about restrictions, take pictures we are told not to make and walk around more freely. Moving behind a Chinese or a Chinese group of travelers is like moving your boat behind an icebreaker in the Arctic Zone. Chinese seem to be "naturally" hearing impaired, easy-going and not responsive to every whim of their guides.
As it always happened day after day, our two "permanent" guides discussed every move of us over lunch and dinner and reported daily to the main travel office in Pyongyang to get instruction. After arrival in Pyongyang one evening, they must have discussed my filming from Wonsan to the Capital with their superior because next day all shooting even from the car window was forbidden... .
For the Chinese leadership governments, dictatorships come and go. Their goal is to penetrate systems and political structures by means of production, exert influence and strengthen ties at all levels through market domination.
North Korea will become a satellite of China. This is not what the KIM'S want. But there is no alternative to the regime's survival of the KIM dynasty The Chinese want to make sure that their North Korean lips will have Chinese make-up on. China, it seems, pays great attention that North Korean and Chinese economies will be close-knit. Beauty products are a forerunner of this strategy, the lipstick a symbol of it.
The end will come but in endless and invisible small steps, unnoticeable and the Kim regime will come under Chinese patronage. China will help but at a price. North Korea is in China's orbit. China is already now buttering up the North Korean consumer -- not South Korea and the West. They kept the KIM JONG IL regime afloat and secured KIM JONG UN's succession.
My impression is that the Chinese don't want to topple the KIM dynasty and dictatorship for cynical and pragmatic reasons. They may fear that, without the Kim's ruthless grip on power, it could provoke a serious revolt and North Korea could rush inadvertently towards reunification with South Korea. A reunited Korea under Seoul leadership and allied to the US, highly developed, democratic and western oriented, would make the "Chinese Teeth feel very cold" indeed.

A view into technology on the other side of the world
This talk will reflect on teaching Computer Science in Pyongyang over the last two years, and look at how technology has been integrated into civilian life in the DPRK. Remaining an extremely isolated country, many people would be surprised to hear that cellphones have become commonplace within the capitol, let alone that the country invests in custom hardware and software. I'll talk through the current state of desktop and mobile technology in pyongyang, and what's changing.
From redstar OS, a custom redhat-derived linux desktop and server environment, to the arirang cellphone and tablet, technology in the DPRK is different from what you are likely to see anywhere else in the world. Most systems are not widely available, and exist as much in rumor as reality. Partially from language barrier, and partially due to restrictive import, export, and communication policies, there are large gaps and large amounts of misinformation around most aspects of the country.
I've spent the last two falls teaching Computer Science, specifically Operating Systems and Databases, to undergraduates at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. In the course of life in Pyongyang, I've been able to observe the growing prevalence of mobile technology, and get a firsthand look at the state of consumer technology in the country.
In this talk I'll provide a demonstration of redstar 3.0, the current generation of the desktop operating system, and offer the caveat that it is seldom used in practice. I will also bring a samjiyong android tablet, to demonstrate the state of mobile technology. I'll focus the talk on discussing what international technology is and isn't applicable to the country, and the opportunities going forwards.

NORTH KOREA has closed its borders in fear of the spread of the Ebola virus. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards.
