Sixth Assessment Report cycle

The IPCC is currently in its Sixth Assessment cycle. During this cycle, the Panel will produce three Special Reports, a Methodology Report on national greenhouse gas inventories and the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).

The 43rd Session of the IPCC held in April 2016 agreed that the AR6 Synthesis Report would be finalized in 2022 in time for the first UNFCCC global stocktake when countries will review progress towards their goal of keeping global warming to well below 2 °C while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 °C. The three Working Group contributions to AR6 will be finalized in 2021.
A call for nomination for experts to a scoping meeting for the AR6 has been issued to governments, observer organizations and IPCC bureau members. They will submit their nominations via their focal points before midnight (CET) on Monday 14 November 2016.

Call for expert nominations for scoping currently open (deadline: 14 November 2016)

Special Report on impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C (SR1.5)

Following the decision of the panel at its 43rd Session to accept the invitation from the UNFCCC, at its 44th Session, the Panel approved the outline of Global Warming of 1.5 °C, an IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty.

Special Report on climate change and oceans and the cryosphere (SROCC)

At its 43rd Session (Nairobi, Kenya, 11 - 13 April 2016), the IPCC Panel decided to prepare a special report on climate change and the oceans and the cryosphere. The Special Report will be developed under the joint scientific leadership of Working Groups I, II and III with support from the WGII TSU.

The meeting to scope the Special Report will be held on 6 - 9 December 2016 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Refining the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories

At the 43rd Session of the IPCC in April 2016, the Panel agreed to refine the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, including producing a Methodology Report in order to update and supplement the 2006 IPCC Guidelines. Work on the Guidelines is necessary to update and provide a sound scientific basis for future international climate action especially under the Paris Agreement. This process will result in a Methodology Report which will be used in conjunction with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines. At its 44th Session, the Panel approved the outline for the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines.

A call for nominations of authors was issued to Governments and Observer Organizations on 31 October 2016. The Governments and Observer Organizations are requested to submit nominations to the Head of the TFI Technical Support Unit via email (2019refinement-nominations@iges.or.jp) before Friday, 9 December 2016 (midnight CEST).

IPCC Resource Mobilization

Assessments of climate change by the IPCC, drawing on the work of hundreds of scientists from all over the world, enable policymakers at all levels of government to take sound, evidence-based decisions. They represent extraordinary value as the authors volunteer their time and expertise. The running costs of the Secretariat, including the organization of meetings and travel costs of delegates from developing countries and countries with economies in transition, are covered through the IPCC Trust Fund.
