Melbourne Cup 2016: Jennifer Hawkins wore Republican red to Cup day

Show comments

Jennifer Hawkins wore a Republican red ensemble to the Melbourne Cup.

The Myer ambassador did away with her usual Cup day tradition of donning a glamorous gown and pulled on a jumpsuit by Misha complete with matching wide-brimmed hat by Melissa Jackson and red pumps.

"Red on red," she posted to her 798,000 Instagram fans

It was an interesting hue of choice for Hawkins considering her connection to the Republican nominee Donald Trump has been in the spotlight recently with a video emerging of him humiliating and kissing her on stage at a conference in Sydney in 2011.

She has since defended the man she cites as her business mentor despite the footage and amid allegations of sexual impropriety by 12 other women.

"Sure, I've seen what's been going on the news, but really what is there for me to say other than that he respected me during that time in my life and I have a lot of respect for him because of that ... that's really all I have to say about it," she said.

Hawkins' pointed sartorial statement follows in the footsteps of Trump's wife, Melania, who wore a pussy bow blouse to the second US presidential debate last month, just days after footage emerged of her husband making lewd remarks about women and bragging about grabbing them by the "pussy".

Her all red ensemble was also reminiscent of the latex version singer Britney Spears wore for the film clip for her 2000 hit song, Oops!...I Did It Again! and the virtual lady in red, criminal mastermind Carmen Sandiego.

Hawkins was one of the first to stroll down Millionaires Row on Tuesday but was not alone in wearing a bold, colourful look.

Cornflower blue, strawberry daiquiri pink, snow white and red in varying shades of Heinz sauce to fire engine red were the most popular hues of the day.

Jodi Gordon, looking like a put-together Alice in Wonderland, teamed her Roksanda pink creation with an oversized purple bow to attend the Australian version of the Mad Hatter's tea party, aka Cup day.

Bec Hewitt took the cake for looking the most comfortable, the most colourful and the most like curtains in a custom dress and bomber jacket ensemble by local fashion label, Cristahlea.

Aspiring fashion designer and ex-wife of former swimmer Michael Klim, Lindy Klim looked set to audition for the next production of The Nutcracker in a red and white Dolce & Gabbana coat dress, while Sunrise's Samantha Armytage and Nadia Bartel, wife of AFL great Jimmy Bartel, in Alex Perry, resembled a cloudless summer's sky.
