The City of London is one of the oldest parts of the capitol, as it is located where London was first founded almost 2000 years ago. The City of London roughly constitutes the same area that was mostly unaltered until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century. Known as the "Square Mile", the City nowadays is roughly bounded by the River Thames to the south, Chancery Lane to the west, Charterhouse Street to the north, and the Tower of London to the east. Although the old City's gates are long gone, you can still see their location in the street names. Join us on this video tour as we explore the Tower of London, Leadenhall Market, the City's financial district, St. Paul's Cathedral and more!
The Tower of London
To the east of the City you'll find the Tower of London by the River Thames. The tower was built in 1066, and the imposing building still reflects its turbulent past. In its long years, the Tower has been a fortress, a state prison, and it was also used as a place of execution. Nowadays, the Tower of London is open for visitors. You can see the crown jewels, royal armor and of course the Tower's famous ravens here. Legend says that if the ravens were ever to leave the Tower, England would fall.
Leadenhall Market in the City
Leadenhall Market on Gracechurch Street dates back to the 14th century, and is one of the oldest markets in London. Previously a meat, game and poultry market, the covered market was redesigned in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones, who created a beautiful roof structure. This, coupled with the cobbled walkways and beautiful decorations, make it a popular tourist attraction. Nowadays, you can also find clothes shops and more next to the flowers and fresh produce that are still sold here. When walking through the market don't forget to look up: you can still see the hooks on the walls where fresh produce was displayed in Victorian times.
London & the River Thames
The River Thames passes the City of London to the south and runs through the center of Greater London. The Thames used to play a vital role in London's economy. Although this has changed in modern times, the river is still an essential part of the City. To explore the city in a different way, you can catch one of the riverboat tours that navigate the Thames. This Sunday, three sets of BR debutants — Nu Guinea, Khruangbin and Donna Leake — step to the fore in London.
Berlin-via-Naples duo, Nu Guinea, create sounds that pair humid, sultry deep house and tropical-infused electronics. Their self-titled debut EP was released in October 2014 on the Italian label Early Sounds Recordings to great reviews. But it's their recent concept album based around the distinctive Afrobeat rhythms of legendary drummer Tony Allen that get most necks turning.
We're also super excited to invite Khruangbin to our screens. A real BR favourite for the last year, the Texas/London-based trio have continually pointed towards the explosion of funk music that came out of Thailand in the 60s and 70s as a major source of inspiration. Not just content with facing backwards though, their concoction of languid grooves and drifting soul has a cinematic dreaminess that is as forward-facing as it gets. You'll see why we're so excited about them.
Donna Leake opens proceedings. As chief programmer at Brilliant Corners (and general lovely lady), she's responsible for bringing people to one of the best soundsystems in London; an audiophile's dream based on Japan’s jazz coffee shops (kissaten). Her meandering journeys through jazz, soul and everything else are the perfect mood-setter.

This Sunday, three sets of BR debutants — Nu Guinea, Khruangbin and Donna Leake — step to the fore in London. Berlin-via-Naples duo, Nu Guinea, create sounds that pair humid, sultry deep house and tropical-infused electronics. Their self-titled debut EP was released in October 2014 on the Italian label Early Sounds Recordings to great reviews. But it's their recent concept album based around the distinctive Afrobeat rhythms of legendary drummer Tony Allen that get most necks turning. We're also super excited to invite Khruangbin to our screens. A real BR favourite for the last year, the Texas/London-based trio have continually pointed towards the explosion of funk music that came out of Thailand in the 60s and 70s as a major source of inspiration. Not just content with facing backwards though, their concoction of languid grooves and drifting soul has a cinematic dreaminess that is as forward-facing as it gets. You'll see why we're so excited about them. Donna Leake opens proceedings. As chief programmer at Brilliant Corners (and general lovely lady), she's responsible for bringing people to one of the best soundsystems in London; an audiophile's dream based on Japan’s jazz coffee shops (kissaten). Her meandering journeys through jazz, soul and everything else are the perfect mood-setter. Say sayonara to the warm weather with this dose of astral-facing exotica. -

The City of London is one of the oldest parts of the capitol, as it is located where London was first founded almost 2000 years ago. The City of London roughly constitutes the same area that was mostly unaltered until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century. Known as the "Square Mile", the City nowadays is roughly bounded by the River Thames to the south, Chancery Lane to the west, Charterhouse Street to the north, and the Tower of London to the east. Although the old City's gates are long gone, you can still see their location in the street names. The Tower of London
To the east of the City you'll find the Tower of London by the River Thames. The tower was built in 1066, and the imposing building still reflects its turbulent past. In its long years, the Tower has been a fortress, a state prison, and it was also used as a place of execution. Nowadays, the Tower of London is open for visitors. You can see the crown jewels, royal armor and of course the Tower's famous ravens here. Legend says that if the ravens were ever to leave the Tower, England would fall.
Leadenhall Market in the City
Leadenhall Market on Gracechurch Street dates back to the 14th century, and is one of the oldest markets in London. Previously a meat, game and poultry market, the covered market was redesigned in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones, who created a beautiful roof structure. This, coupled with the cobbled walkways and beautiful decorations, make it a popular tourist attraction. Nowadays, you can also find clothes shops and more next to the flowers and fresh produce that are still sold here. When walking through the market don't forget to look up: you can still see the hooks on the walls where fresh produce was displayed in Victorian times.
London & the River Thames
The River Thames passes the City of London to the south and runs through the center of Greater London. The Thames used to play a vital role in London's economy. Although this has changed in modern times, the river is still an essential part of the City. To explore the city in a different way, you can catch one of the riverboat tours that navigate the Thames. The Great Fire of London started right in City of London along Pudding Lane in 1666. Near Pudding Lane you can find the Monument to the Great Fire of London, which was designed by Christopher Wren. Pudding Lane, the Great Fire of London & St. Paul's Cathedral
The Great Fire of London started right in City of London along Pudding Lane in 1666. Near Pudding Lane you can find the Monument to the Great Fire of London, which was designed by Christopher Wren. This Sunday, three sets of BR debutants — Nu Guinea, Khruangbin and Donna Leake — step to the fore in London.
Berlin-via-Naples duo, Nu Guinea, create sounds that pair humid, sultry deep house and tropical-infused electronics. Their self-titled debut EP was released in October 2014 on the Italian label Early Sounds Recordings to great reviews. But it's their recent concept album based around the distinctive Afrobeat rhythms of legendary drummer Tony Allen that get most necks turning.
We're also super excited to invite Khruangbin to our screens. A real BR favourite for the last year, the Texas/London-based trio have continually pointed towards the explosion of funk music that came out of Thailand in the 60s and 70s as a major source of inspiration. Not just content with facing backwards though, their concoction of languid grooves and drifting soul has a cinematic dreaminess that is as forward-facing as it gets. You'll see why we're so excited about them.
Donna Leake opens proceedings. As chief programmer at Brilliant Corners (and general lovely lady), she's responsible for bringing people to one of the best soundsystems in London; an audiophile's dream based on Japan’s jazz coffee shops (kissaten). Her meandering journeys through jazz, soul and everything else are the perfect mood-setter.
Say sayonara to the warm weather with this dose of astral-facing exotica.

So Hello from London! Time for a new destination. This is a city that I haven't visited in almost 4 years. So we're both very excited to be in London. And we're going to be making a little video guide. Actually a really big video guide because we plan on showing you 50 different things to do around London.
Our first stop was Trafalgar Square. This square leads to a lot of central attractions, so it's a nice place to people watch, get your bearings, and plan out where you want to go in the city.
The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. It offers a bird's eye view of the city.
Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence for Britain's sovereigns since 1837. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every year.
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Palace along with Big Ben are two of the top London attractions that dot the city-scape.
The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the River Thames.
And that's a wrap for London! Like with any mega city, it's impossible to cover all the sights and attractions you can enjoy here, but hopefully this video will give you an idea of what London has to offer.

So Hello from London! Time for a new destination. This is a city that I haven't visited in almost 4 years. So we're both very excited to be in London. And we're going to be making a little video guide. Actually a really big video guide because we plan on showing you 50 different things to do around London.
Our first stop was Trafalgar Square. This square leads to a lot of central attractions, so it's a nice place to people watch, get your bearings, and plan out where you want to go in the city.
The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. It offers a bird's eye view of the city.
Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence for Britain's sovereigns since 1837. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every year.
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Palace along with Big Ben are two of the top London attractions that dot the city-scape.
The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the River Thames.
And that's a wrap for London! Like with any mega city, it's impossible to cover all the sights and attractions you can enjoy here, but hopefully this video will give you an idea of what London has to offer.

Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. So I wanted to create something different. Something aimed at the frequent traveller, something portable and short-form. Something...useful.
In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport into the city, the best way to get around, how much things cost, and why you should ALWAYS stand on the right.
In follow up episodes we'll be adding a food and drink segment, as well as tips on how to avoid those awkward social and business faux pas.
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and welcome any thoughts, feedback, ideas, and suggestions for future episodes. Travel is my passion and I'm excited to share it with you.

London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts.
The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty medieval fortress with 13 towers that throughout its 900 years, has served many functions and from the Middle Ages, it was a heavily fortified prison.
After the medieval St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the 36 years of its construction, its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created.
The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire of London that destroyed 80 percent of the city. In four days, more than 13,000 buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began.
Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around 60 years later, George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex.
The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames, it rises high into the sky, opposite the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. Exciting both day and night, London is a modern city with age old traditions and a long and colorful history.

The Zoo confirmed police officers were called to the Regent’s Park site at 5.17pm this evening, following reports of “an incident”.
Met Police confirmed the animal has now been recaptured after being subdued by a tranquilliser dart.
PANIC: Armed police respond after a gorilla escaped its enclosure at London Zoo.
"They gave us free teas and coffees and obviously we were asking what was going on and they told us that a gorilla had got out of its enclosure and that we weren't allowed out of the park at half-five so we had to wait.
"As we were waiting we saw the police turning up in numbers with loads of guns."
Another zoo visitor claimed to have snapped a shot of the gorilla "just two seconds before he threw himself at the window".
Officials are yet to comment on how the animal managed to escape its enclosure.
According to the zoo's website there are at least seven gorillas living in its Gorilla Kingdom.

The Zoo confirmed police officers were called to the Regent’s Park site at 5.17pm this evening, following reports of “an incident”.
Met Police confirmed the animal has now been recaptured after being subdued by a tranquilliser dart.
PANIC: Armed police respond after a gorilla escaped its enclosure at London Zoo.
"They gave us free teas and coffees and obviously we were asking what was going on and they told us that a gorilla had got out of its enclosure and that we weren't allowed out of the park at half-five so we had to wait.
"As we were waiting we saw the police turning up in numbers with loads of guns."
Another zoo visitor claimed to have snapped a shot of the gorilla "just two seconds before he threw himself at the window".
Officials are yet to comment on how the animal managed to escape its enclosure.
According to the zoo's website there are at least seven gorillas living in its Gorilla Kingdom.

On the surface, London is a buzzing metropolis. But underneath lies secret, hidden worlds, all but forgotten by the millions of people above. These places make up the countless layers of London, and each tells a unique story of the city’s past - successes and failures; victories and tragedies.
When the Romans founded settlements along the River Thames during the 1st century AD, they laid down the very first layer of one of the world’s greatest cities. Long buried pieces of the original Roman town still survive to this day – statues, walls, even an entire amphitheatre, where fierce gladiators once fought…and died for glory.
London has seen more than its fair share of death over the centuries. The terrible Plague of the 14th century killed more than half of the population in just two years; and the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666 left vast swathes of the city’s timber framed buildings in ashes. These tragic events are forever carved into London’s subterranean landscape – gruesome plague pits filled with thousands of corpses, and eerie mines excavated for the materials to rebuild the city.
But the Victorians were the true masters of the underground; from the creation of the first tunnel under a river to the foundation of one of the world’s most iconic public transport systems. While 19th century engineers believed no goal was out of reach, it often meant that the highest price was paid for by workers - many men tragically lost their lives building the wonders of the industrial age.
During the German bombing campaign of London during WWII the underground played a role of life or death. Many railway or ‘Tube’ stations were transformed into huge air raid shelters, and top secret bunkers enabled Churchill’s government to fight the war from within the city. The Prime Minister even had a private underground restroom…hidden inside? A direct hotline to the White House!
The Underground has always been the perfect place to store precious items; from the deep tunnel storage of priceless works of art during the war, to impenetrable vaults packed with silver. But the British Library stores a truly astonishing collection of nearly 1.5 million items, from modern novels to priceless historical documents, all available at the exact time a visitor wants it, whether they're coming from Notting Hill or Nantucket.
In a city as densely packed as this, sometimes the only way for a building to develop is to build down – and that's exactly what the British Museum is doing. Surrounded by 300 year old buildings and containing the wonders of human civilization, any construction work here is a perilous operation. But four new subterranean levels will breathe a new lease of life into this 260 year old institution, paving the way for the next generation.
