Gottschalk was born to a Jewish businessman from London and a Creole mother in New Orleans, where he was exposed to a variety of musical traditions. He had six brothers and sisters, five of whom were half-siblings by his father's mulatto mistress.[1] His family lived for a time in a tiny cottage at Royal and Esplanade in the Vieux Carré. Louis later moved in with relatives at 518 Conti Street; his maternal grandmother Buslé and his nurse Sally had both been born in Saint-Domingue (known later as Haiti). Gottschalk played the piano from an early age and was soon recognized as a wunderkind by the New Orleans bourgeois establishment. During 1840, he gave his informal public debut at the new St. Charles Hotel.
Only two years later at the age of 13, Gottschalk left the United States and sailed to Europe, as he and his father realized a classical training was required to fulfill his musical ambitions. The Paris Conservatoire, however, rejected his application without hearing him on the grounds of his nationality; Pierre Zimmermann, head of the piano faculty, commented that "America is a country of steam engines". Gottschalk gradually gained access to the musical establishment through family friends.
After Gottschalk returned to the United States during 1853, he traveled extensively; a sojourn in Cuba during 1854 was the beginning of a series of trips to Central and South America. By the 1860s, Gottschalk had established himself as the best known pianist in the New World. Although born and reared in New Orleans, he was a supporter of the Union cause during the American Civil War. He returned to his native city only occasionally for concerts, but Gottschalk always introduced himself as a New Orleans native.
During May 1865, he was mentioned in a San Francisco newspaper as having "travelled 95,000 miles by rail and given 1,000 concerts." However, later during 1865, he was forced to leave the United States because of a scandalous affair with a student at the Oakland Female Seminary in Oakland, California. He never returned to the U.S.
Gottschalk chose to travel to South America, where he continued to give frequent concerts. During one of these concerts, in Rio de Janeiro on November 24, 1869, he collapsed from having contracted malaria.[2] Just before his collapse, he had finished playing his romantic piece Morte!! (interpreted as "she is dead"), although the actual collapse occurred just as he started to play his celebrated piece Tremolo.
Gottschalk never recovered from the collapse. Three weeks later, on December 18, 1869, at the age of 40, he died at his hotel in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, probably from an overdose of quinine.[2] During 1870 his remains were returned to the United States and were interred at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.[3]
His burial spot was originally marked by a magnificent marble monument, topped by an "Angel of Music" statue which disappeared some time during the mid-20th century. The Green-Wood is seeking donations to restore the monument in his honor, the cost of which they estimate at $200,000.[4]
His grand-nephew Louis Ferdinand Gottschalk was a notable composer of silent film and musical theatre scores.

Along Came Love is a 1936 American comedy film directed by Bert Lytell and written by Arthur Caesar. The film stars Irene Hervey, Charles Starrett, Doris Kenyon, H. B. Warner, Irene Franklin and Bernadene Hayes. The film was released on November 6, 1936, by Paramount Pictures.
The shop girl Emmy Grant meets the handsome doorman John Patrick O'Ryan outside of a theater and she is convinced that he is her true love. Ferdinand Gottschalk
Ferdinand Gottschalk (28 February 1858 – 10 November 1944) was an English theatre and film actor. He appeared in 76 films between 1917 and 1938. He was born and died in London, England.
He made his first appearance on the stage in Toronto, Canada in 1887 and worked continuously after that date including prominent parts on the New York stage as well as in films. He also wrote and produced plays.

Thomas Gottschalk
Thomas Johannes Gottschalk (born 18 May 1950) is a German radio and television host, entertainer and actor. He is best known for hosting the popular show Wetten, dass..?, which he led to a huge success in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol until 2011. Until 2015 he was also the testimonial personality in television advertisements for Haribo confectionery.
Early life
Gottschalk was born in the German city of Bamberg, Bavaria, as the son of a lawyer. After attending the Humanistisches Gymnasium (humanities-oriented high school) in Kulmbach, he studied history and German philology, eventually taking his exams as a teacher for primary and secondary schools; however, it was during this time that he discovered his true vocation: entertainment.
Career
From 1971 on, Gottschalk worked as a freelancer for the youth program of the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting); in 1973, he became anchor for a news program. In 1976, after a brief detour to the newspaper Münchner Merkur, he became a regular contributor at the Bayerischer Rundfunk, and subsequently gained popularity as the host of the show Pop nach acht. He was awarded the Kurt-Magnus-Preis for his "outstanding talents" as a radio host in 1978.

Markus Lanz
Markus Lanz (born 16 March 1969 in Bruneck, South Tyrol, Italy) is presenter on German television.
Early life
Lanz is a member of the German speaking majority in the Italian province of South Tyrol. He grew up in Geiselsberg, a village that lies 1,344 metres above sea level in the central Alps. He has stated that his family was poor, and that his father died at an early age, leaving his mother to care for 3 children. His good school grades earned him a scholarship to the monastery of Neustift, where he went to Brixen secondary school. He finished high school in Bruneck and completed military service as a radio operator in the alpine division of the Italian army before working at the radio station Radio Holiday. In 1992 he graduated from the Bayerische Akademie für Werbung und Marketing in Munich with a degree in Business Communications.
Early career
In 1992 he started a two year trainee program at Radio Hamburg in Hamburg. In 1995 he became the news announcer at the regional TV station RTL North and in 1997 started as presenter of a regional evening news show in Schleswig-Holstein.

David Thomas Roberts
David Thomas Roberts (born January 16, 1955) is an American composer and musician, known primarily as a modern ragtime composer. Roberts is also a painter in a primitivist style.
Born in Moss Point, Mississippi, United States, his first recording, "Music For a Pretty Baby", appeared in 1978. Pieces such as "The Early Life of Larry Hoffer", "Roberto Clemente", "Pinelands Memoir", "Through the Bottomlands", and the suite, "New Orleans Streets" have caused Roberts to be considered one of the leading contemporary ragtime-based composers. The New Orleans historian Al Rose called him "the most important composer of this half of the century in America."
Roberts coined the term "Terra Verde" (meaning "green earth") as a label for compositions which can not be considered as conventional ragtime, mostly by contemporary ragtime writers such as himself, Frank French, Scott Kirby, Hal Isbitz and others.
Roberts also works as a writer and visual artist, and is currently writing a critical history of New Ragtime. His mixed-media art appears in the magazine of visionary art, Raw Vision, and his poetry has been anthologized in Another South, a collection of experimental writing published in 2003 by the University of Alabama Press.

Gottschalk was born to a Jewish businessman from London and a Creole mother in New Orleans, where he was exposed to a variety of musical traditions. He had six brothers and sisters, five of whom were half-siblings by his father's mulatto mistress.[1] His family lived for a time in a tiny cottage at Royal and Esplanade in the Vieux Carré. Louis later moved in with relatives at 518 Conti Street; his maternal grandmother Buslé and his nurse Sally had both been born in Saint-Domingue (known later as Haiti). Gottschalk played the piano from an early age and was soon recognized as a wunderkind by the New Orleans bourgeois establishment. Gottschalk played the piano from an early age and was soon recognized as a wunderkind by the New Orleans bourgeois establishment. During 1840, he gave his informal public debut at the new St. Charles Hotel.
Only two years later at the age of 13, Gottschalk left the United States and sailed to Europe, as he and his father realized a classical training was required to fulfill his musical ambitions. The Paris Conservatoire, however, rejected his application without hearing him on the grounds of his nationality; Pierre Zimmermann, head of the piano faculty, commented that "America is a country of steam engines". Gottschalk gradually gained access to the musical establishment through family friends.
After Gottschalk returned to the United States during 1853, he traveled extensively; a sojourn in Cuba during 1854 was the beginning of a series of trips to Central and South America. By the 1860s, Gottschalk had established himself as the best known pianist in the New World. Although born and reared in New Orleans, he was a supporter of the Union cause during the American Civil War. He returned to his native city only occasionally for concerts, but Gottschalk always introduced himself as a New Orleans native.
During May 1865, he was mentioned in a San Francisco newspaper as having "travelled 95,000 miles by rail and given 1,000 concerts." However, later during 1865, he was forced to leave the United States because of a scandalous affair with a student at the Oakland Female Seminary in Oakland, California. He never returned to the U.S.
Gottschalk chose to travel to South America, where he continued to give frequent concerts. During one of these concerts, in Rio de Janeiro on November 24, 1869, he collapsed from having contracted malaria.[2] Just before his collapse, he had finished playing his romantic piece Morte!! (interpreted as "she is dead"), although the actual collapse occurred just as he started to play his celebrated piece Tremolo.
Gottschalk never recovered from the collapse. Three weeks later, on December 18, 1869, at the age of 40, he died at his hotel in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, probably from an overdose of quinine.[2] During 1870 his remains were returned to the United States and were interred at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.[3]
His burial spot was originally marked by a magnificent marble monument, topped by an "Angel of Music" statue which disappeared some time during the mid-20th century. The Green-Wood is seeking donations to restore the monument in his honor, the cost of which they estimate at $200,000.[4]
His grand-nephew Louis Ferdinand Gottschalk was a notable composer of silent film and musical theatre scores.

My discovery of this sonata came from exploration of the piano repertoire, more specifically a CD titled The Virtuosity of Earl Wild. If you think about it the greatest sonatas for violin and piano were for the most part written by pianists that did not play violin for example Strauss, Brahms, Faure, Lekeu, Beethoven, Franck, etc.
I focused my attention on neglected piano composers from the late classical and romantic eras and discovered many names I was unfamiliar with like John Field, Clementi, Pleyel, Ries, Czerny, Hummel, Raff, Herz, Thalberg, Moscheles, Rubenstein, Paderewski, Godowski, Busoni, Reger, Henselt, Kalkbrenner, Weber, Dohnanyi, Dussek, Mayerl, Gottschalk, Bulow, Dukas, Tomasek, Pixis, Chabrier, Cui, Borodin, Medtner, Scriabin, Bax, Grainger, Moszkowski, and Scharwenka.
Even if some of these composers did not wire music for violin and piano I continue to encourage violinists to transcribe piano music for violin for example Chopin wrote nothing for violin but many have transcribed his works for violin - extreme examples of this is a Chopin Ballade transcribed by Ysaye and recorded by Graffin and Liszt Mephisto Waltz recorded by Rachel Barton Pine. I would love to hear some more violin interpretations of the music of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin.

My discovery of this sonata came from exploration of the piano repertoire, more specifically a CD titled The Virtuosity of Earl Wild. If you think about it the greatest sonatas for violin and piano were for the most part written by pianists that did not play violin for example Strauss, Brahms, Faure, Lekeu, Beethoven, Franck, etc.
I focused my attention on neglected piano composers from the late classical and romantic eras and discovered many names I was unfamiliar with like John Field, Clementi, Pleyel, Ries, Czerny, Hummel, Raff, Herz, Thalberg, Moscheles, Rubenstein, Paderewski, Godowski, Busoni, Reger, Henselt, Kalkbrenner, Weber, Dohnanyi, Dussek, Mayerl, Gottschalk, Bulow, Dukas, Tomasek, Pixis, Chabrier, Cui, Borodin, Medtner, Scriabin, Bax, Grainger, Moszkowski, and Scharwenka.
Even if some of these composers did not wire music for violin and piano I continue to encourage violinists to transcribe piano music for violin for example Chopin wrote nothing for violin but many have transcribed his works for violin - extreme examples of this is a Chopin Ballade transcribed by Ysaye and recorded by Graffin and Liszt Mephisto Waltz recorded by Rachel Barton Pine. I would love to hear some more violin interpretations of the music of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin.
