The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

VICE News has obtained footage taken from the headcam of an Islamic State (IS) fighter who died in March while battling Kurdish peshmerga troops in northern Iraq. The clash took place about 30 miles north of Mosul.
Unlike IS propaganda, which often presents sweeping battlefield victories, the video shows chaos, panic, and the fighters retreating.
VICE News shows the grim reality of an IS foot soldier.

ISIS Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reportedly seriously ill after having his food poisoned by an assassin. Daily Mail reported that the meals prepared for Baghdadi and three other commanders of the terrorist organisation were allegedly poisoned in Nineveh’s Be’aaj district. In fact Daily Mail quoted an Iraqi news agency as saying that four militants, including Baghdadi, were suffering from “severe poisoning” and “have been transferred to an unknown location under strict measures”. While the identities of the three other commanders are still unknown, the ISIS terror group has reportedly launched a campaign of arrests to track down those responsible for poisoning the food. Under Baghdadi's leadership, ISIS spread its tentacles and shocked the world with their beheadings of captured foreign journalists and civilians, as well as attacks in major cities.

It was a strategic stronghold for the terrorist group, with access to the sea and nearby oil refineries. The Islamic State now governs its caliphate from the north central Syrian city of Raqqa, which was once a relatively westernized agricultural hub. As the State's power base, Raqqa is where it imposes its version of Sharia law throughout large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
The “Hisbah” are the new Sharia police. In the latest episode of The Islamic State, VICE News joins them on their daily patrols during Ramadan, and witnesses how they check on shops and scrutinize produce, while at the same time ensuring their strict rules on women’s appearances are adhered to.
We are also taken to an Islamic State prison and speak with inmates accused of abusing drugs and selling alcohol. There we learn firsthand of the prisoners’ punishments, and how they have since “rediscovered” their devotion to the Islamic faith since their incarceration — but are yet to be granted permission to declare their allegiance to the caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

An Islamic state (Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية ad-dawlah al-islāmiyah) is a type of government primarily based on the application of shari'a (Islamic law), dispensation of justice, maintenance of law and order. From the early years of Islam, numerous governments have been founded as "Islamic."
However, the term "Islamic state" has taken on a more specific connotation since the 20th century. The concept of the modern Islamic state has been articulated and promoted by ideologues such as Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Israr Ahmed, and Sayyid Qutb. Like the earlier notion of the caliphate, the modern Islamic state is rooted in Islamic law. It is modeled after the rule of Muhammad. However, unlike caliph-led governments which were imperial despotisms or monarchies (Arabic: malik), a modern Islamic state can incorporate modern political institutions such as elections, parliamentary rule, judicial review, and popular sovereignty.
Today, many Muslim countries have incorporated Islamic law, wholly or in part, into their legal systems. Certain Muslim states have declared Islam to be their state religion in their constitutions, but do not apply Islamic law in their courts. Islamic states which are not Islamic monarchies are usually referred to as Islamic republics.

Abu Bakr
Abū Bakr ‘Abdallāh bin Abī Quḥāfah aṣ-Ṣiddīq (Arabic: أبو بكر عبد الله بن أبي قحافة الصديق; c. 573 CE – 23 August 634 CE) popularly known as Abu Bakr (أبو بكر), was a senior companion (Sahabi) and—through his daughter Aisha—the father-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Abu Bakr became the first openly declared Muslim outside Muhammad's family. Abu Bakr served as a trusted advisor to Muhammad. During Muhammad's lifetime, he was involved in several campaigns and treaties.
He ruled over the Rashidun Caliphate from 632 to 634 CE, when he became the first Muslim Caliph following Muhammad's death. As caliph, Abu Bakr succeeded to the political and administrative functions previously exercised by Muhammad. He was commonly known as The Truthful (Arabic: الصديق, translit. As-Saddīq). Abu Bakr's reign lasted for 27 months, ending with his death after an illness.
Lineage and title
Abu Bakr's full name was Abd Allah ibn 'Uthman ibn Aamir ibn Amr ibn Ka'ab ibn Sa'ad ibn Taym (from whom the at-Taymi al-Quraishi) ibn Murrah ibn Ka'ab ibn Lu'ai ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr al-Quraishi.

ISIS Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reportedly seriously ill after having his food poisoned by an assassin. Daily Mail reported that the meals prepared for Baghdadi and three other commanders of the terrorist organisation were allegedly poisoned in Nineveh’s Be’aaj district. In fact Daily Mail quoted an Iraqi news agency as saying that four militants, including Baghdadi, were suffering from “severe poisoning” and “have been transferred to an unknown location under strict measures”. While the identities of the three other commanders are still unknown, the ISIS terror group has reportedly launched a campaign of arrests to track down those responsible for poisoning the food. While the identities of the three other commanders are still unknown, the ISIS terror group has reportedly launched a campaign of arrests to track down those responsible for poisoning the food. Under Baghdadi's leadership, ISIS spread its tentacles and shocked the world with their beheadings of captured foreign journalists and civilians, as well as attacks in major cities.

The Islamic State now governs its caliphate from the north central Syrian city of Raqqa, which was once a relatively westernized agricultural hub. As the State's power base, Raqqa is where it imposes its version of Sharia law throughout large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
The “Hisbah” are the new Sharia police. In the latest episode of The Islamic State, VICE News joins them on their daily patrols during Ramadan, and witnesses how they check on shops and scrutinize produce, while at the same time ensuring their strict rules on women’s appearances are adhered to.
We are also taken to an Islamic State prison and speak with inmates accused of abusing drugs and selling alcohol. There we learn firsthand of the prisoners’ punishments, and how they have since “rediscovered” their devotion to the Islamic faith since their incarceration — but are yet to be granted permission to declare their allegiance to the caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports Islamic State militants captured several villages from Syrian rebels in a counter-attack near the Turkish border that forced the foreign-backed insurgents to retreat. According to Reuters, the rebels had been pushing towards the ISIS stronghold of Dabiq, a village with symbolic importance to the jihadists. Turkey has supported the rebels with tanks and air strikes. The ISIS attack began late on Friday. The British-Based Observatory said ISIS retook villages including Akhtarin and pushed towards Turkman Bareh, some two miles east of Dabiq. The Observatory tracks the war using contacts on the ground. Many Muslims voluntarily fast during the month of Muharram, though this fasting is not mandatory. It is also one of the four months of the Muslim calendar in which fighting is not permitted. Different significance is attached to the Muslim New Year’s Day by Shia and Sunni Muslims. The beginning of the Islamic Calendar also heralded a turning point in the history of Islam and is a time to reflect on the revolution and complete transformation of society through a unique brotherhood. The focus was not only on the development of personal belief, but on the development of Islam as a complete way of life. Many acts of worship such as Zakat, Fasting and Hajj revolve around this calendar.
It is an opportunity to reflect on the past year and be thankful for a new dawn, a time to look forward to new beginnings and to seek greater closeness to Allah and the Holy Prophet by striving to embody our humanity through consciousness of Allah and service to others.
It is imperative for Muslims to maintain a connection to Allah through specific acts of worship and also to establish justice and peace. They must repent and become righteous through specific acts of worship like donation to charity, volunteering, discarding wastes on idle pursuits, memorizing verses of Qur’an, spending quality time with family, furthering Islamic knowledge, serving the less fortunate and thanking Allah for the all blessings and bounties bestowed on Mankind. We congratulate our Muslim readers on the onset of the Muslim New Year and wish that it will be a year of peace, progress, end of economic recession and harmonious coexistence.

October 2, 2016 marked the Islamic New Year 1438 A.H. (After Hijra) which is the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. The Muslim calendar and times are calculated based on sightings of the crescent moon. Thus the Islamic Lunar Calendar year consists of 354-355 days.
The 12 months in the Islamic/Hijra calendar was started by the second Caliph Umar in 16 AH/ 637 CE. The first month of the year, Muharram, known as the month of remembrance, is one of the most important months in the Muslim calendar. Muharram means “forbidden” and many Muslims fast during this period. The Muslim New Year’s Day is not regarded to be as significant as days such as Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. It however marks the day that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) established the first Islamic state in the city of Medina, once called Yathrib. The Holy Prophet migrated from Mecca to Medina in 622 A.D., an event now referred to as the Hijrah which signifies the beginning of the Muslim calendar. It marks the time that Islam became a community with its own state and its own calendar.
Many Muslims voluntarily fast during the month of Muharram, though this fasting is not mandatory. It is also one of the four months of the Muslim calendar in which fighting is not permitted. Different significance is attached to the Muslim New Year’s Day by Shia and Sunni Muslims. Beginning with the Iranian revolution of the late 1970s and the establishment of the Islamic Republic to todays rise of Isis to prominence, it has become increasingly apparent that Islamism is a major global force in the twenty-first century that demands acknowledgment and answers.as a highly-integrated belief system, the Islamic worldview rejects secularism and accounts for a prominent role for religion in the politics and laws of Muslim societies. Islam is primarily a legal framework that covers all aspects of Muslims individual and communal lives. In this sense, the Islamic state is a logical instrument for managing Muslim societies. Even moderate Muslims who genuinely, but not necessarily vociferously, challenge the extremists strategies are not dismissive of the political role of Islam and the viability of an Islamic state. However, sectarian and scholastic schisms within Islam that date back to the prophets demise do undermine any possibility of consensus about the legal, institutional, and policy parameters of the Islamic state. Within its Shia sectarian limitations, this book attempts to offer some answers to questions about the nature of the Islamic state. Nearly four decades of experience with the Islamic Republic of Iran offers us some insights into such a states accomplishments, potentials, and challenges. While the Islamic worldview offers a general framework for governance, this framework is in dire need of modification to be applicable to modern societies. As Iranians have learned, in the realm of practical politics, transcending the restrictive precepts of Islam is the most viable strategy for building a functional Islamic state. Indeed, Islam does provide both doctrinal and practical instruments for transcending these restrictions. This pursuit of pragmatism could potentially offer impressive strategies for governance as long as sectarian, scholastic, and autocratic proclivities of authorities do not derail the rights of the public and their demand for an orderly management of their societies.

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.
The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.
Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.
But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians.

FRANCE 24 brings you a rare documentary filmed inside Syria. Our reporters gained exclusive access to the Syrian Democratic Forces, a coalition of Kurdish and Arab militias, as they continue to battle to recapture cities and territories from the Islamic State group.
For two years the strategic town of Shaddadi, in northeastern Syria, was a stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) group jihadists. In February, 5,000 fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of Kurdish and Arab militias, encircled the city and battled the terrorists for 10 days. It took fierce fighting, supported by air strikes from the US-led coalition, and was slow progress until finally the SDF retook Shaddadi on February 19, liberating its residents from the yoke of the jihadists.
The civilians who had not fled Shaddadi greeted the SDF troops with relief and recounted the horror of their lives under the Islamists' reign of terror. The bodies of terrorists littered the ground, but so did those of civilians killed by air strikes.
Village by village, the SDF Coalition made up of Kurdish, Arab, Armenian, Assyrian, Chechen, Turkmen and Circassian fighters is determined to expand the territories it controls. A key ally of the West, its aim now is to influence Syria’s destiny.
FRANCE 24 reporters Romeo Langlois, Mayssa Awad and Mohammed Hassan were able to gain exclusive access to the fighters of this interethnic coalition that is taking on the IS group "caliphate". They witnessed firsthand the battle to take back the town of Shaddadi. This is their extraordinary 35-minute documentary.

Under its former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), it was formed in April 2013, growing out of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).
It has since been disavowed by al-Qaeda, but has become one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria and Iraq.
Its precise size is unclear but it is thought to include thousands of fighters, including many foreign jihadists.
The organisation is led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Little is known about him, but it is believed he was born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971 and joined the insurgency that erupted in Iraq soon after the 2003 US-led invasion.
In 2010 he emerged as the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Isis.
The group has seen considerable military success. In March 2013, it took over the Syrian city of Raqqa - the first provincial capital to fall under rebel control.In January 2014, it capitalised on growing tension between Iraq's Sunni minority and Shia-led government by taking control of the predominantly Sunni city of Fallujah, in the western province of Anbar.
